The film itself is a good way to show everyone in the world on how to progress to a more democratic and sensible society (as far as I have finished part1/5). It is a good example to show "how dirty" the attacks on other candidates which always happen on the election campaign. The film also educates both candidates and voters on what qualities they should look for when they take part in the election. It is the time for everyone of us to revise the purpose of having an election through this series
I want to know what that fat kid's parents did to produce such a wretched child, so I can completely avoid it.
Cheng Cheng is definitely on route to becoming one of China's oh so respected government officials, already wanting to order around other people, getting the other children to do his dirty work, whilst he himself just wants to watch T.V! These types of children need to be disciplined strongly before they grow up to become the demons of the planet.
it's not the FIRST time a class monitor is elected in China. I ran for similar positions when i was a kid 20 years ago.
The youth marching, the vow for the C party, the big "Min Zhu"(democracy) written on the blackboard... These sensational elements sure cater the westerners' curiosity and sentiment for China, in a Hollywood style. It is a good story, but part of it is not true.
jus wanna say sth... the teacher seems to have no idea what an election is and introduced children nth about democracy. it's not jus about electing who you like, but also about respecting others and stand by rules which keep the election fair.
I watched this documentary in China without any difficulty. It is a very popular, desired and positively fashionable factual film in China. China is a well-established democracy on the right track. The argument that there is no democracy in the country is simply an obviously blindingly misleading fallacy.

And although China is still in an unsatisfying level of democracy and human rights, the situation is improving. And surely we know what is 'democracy'(at least literally) and what is 'to vote'. Please be patient and give China some time! Please help us to improve the situation but not teasing us and exaggerate the situation!
I grew up in China. Throughout my primary and secondary education, all the class monitors are elected my students but not appointed by teachers! Everyone can enter for the election and candidates are not nominated by teachers at all!
Also, we only made a short speech to tell others why we want to run for the position and what we would do if we got the position. Never had talent show. The classmates already knew you well--don't need such thing at all!
I used to be in Taiyuan, Shanxi. Election at my elementary (around 2002) was simple: One 45min class dedicated to election; those who wanted to contend speak one by one; students put names in a box; the teacher counts the ballot. before and during the 45 min period, no visible collaboration, persuasion or bribing shown in the documentary was present.
first of all, 班长are Class Leader, not monitor, don't make everything dictator-sounding. It reflects the current situation, there has been a lot of changes in the past years, especially in larger cities. give it a break, democracy in the west isn't all that great either.
lol tell me another country that has its students pledge allegiance. -- Why teach kids about a inferior government system (in there minds)? Do we teach our young kids about communism - and if we do do we tell them about the benefits of such system?
@michaelrawle No you don't seem to teach people about communism. However America particularly also appears to have a social stigma against communism that rivals the hate against Nazis.
Then again I'm just some guy from the other side of the world. What do I know?

This makes some crucial points about democracy.
Maybe it isn't the be-all and the end-all.
Maybe it should be more of a free market system where the people accept the govt that gives them the best deal.
