I wonder how this bad boy would do if it was thrown into a war. Most modern Japanese equipment has never been used in combat which often the true test of any piece of military hardware.
@steelgear Japanese military equipment now days are just for self defence and are special constructed for Japanese land and nature. Using this tanks to invade a country would be a bad thing as it is not an assault tanks, only for defence
@SMGJohn You seemed to have missed my point completely. I am saying there is no telling how good this tank is unless we see how good it is in combat. Never once did I say anything about how effective it would be in an invasion. I suggest you re-read my comment.
@steelgear That's my point, you should think again. I was talking about your comment about your point of it being tested in the field. It would have to be employed in Middle East or something, or do you expect Japan to be invaded in order for it to be effective? Actually the only two countries that could attack Japan would be South Korea or America.
@SMGJohn I think you have gone on a very wild tangent on hypothetical enemies and fictional combat situations which has little bearing on what i said or even reality for that matter. I have made my point and I'm not interested in getting into an online argument with someone with little capacity for English comprehension.
@akinkhoo t-bar still has about twice the roadwheel travel though. Hydropneumatic is limited by the size of the cylinder when compressed (at most 1/2 the extended size), just like coil spring suspensions in world war 2. Torsion bar is limited only by the limit at which the wheel itself can travel, so it can travel further. It's also easier to fix.
Hydropneumatic is better for high speed over mild terrain, but torsion bars give you higher speed & traction over the harshest terrain.
Your criticism over hydropneumatic suspension is new to me, I would be interested in taking a look at the sources that led you to beleive that Torsion bar is better for harsh rough terrain. Thank you!
@marmaladekamikaze simple math. Hydropneumatic uses a cylinder with up to 1/2 its size at compressed. Torsion bar can twist as far as the wheel has room. It's the same as comparing Christie and standard coil spring bogies--same problem, which is the springing medium's compressed size. T-bars are compressed rotationally, not linearly.
Interesting, I'll have to look into it some more, I've taken a spin in one of the old Citreon cars, that had a hydropneumatic suspension, and although it might not be the best choice for a ruggedized tank, it was the most comfortable driving I have ever had. Pot holes were glided over with ease. Perhaps with the move to most conflicts now occurring in urban areas, Torsion bar(although more versatile) may not be the best option? Also I was wondering if you could answer a question-

Pot holes were glided over with ease. Perhaps with the move to most conflicts now occurring in urban areas, Torsion bar(although more versatile) may not be the best option? Also I was wondering if you could answer a question-
-Question, since conventional Tracked MBT's are prone to track failure, which puts the whole vehicle out of business, why haven't tank designers compromised and tried a 6x6 independently driven, mini track system, like the Bronco Mattracks?(a vid of the mattrack is here on the tube). That way the tank could still move if one track failed, right?
@marmaladekamikaze Huh. That's a good idea (though mattrack itself wouldn't work). I'd imagine that weight would be an issue though, as well as complexity and the fact that it's all about ground pressure and one track = one set of parts, one driveshaft, and one solid ground contact area.
@marmaladekamikaze hell, you might even be able to simplify the suspension by having just the whole track bogie be suspended, rather than each roadwheel, and that'd also remove the issue of track shedding (having tracks slip off). It'd make repair easy as well.
After WW|| Japans was never aloud to make a navy or army because of Pearl Harbor that is why they are so technologically advanced because all of there money goss to technology research instead of an military
As today's MBT, it's too light (44 tons), compared with most 3~3.5 generation MBTs (55~65 tons) of other countries. This means that Type 10 sacrificed many MBT features, especially the main armors, as it had to fit into the weight limitation for Japan's domestic roads, bridges and railroads.
Thus, Type 10 is only for Japan's own use. No one would buy such a ridiculously light tank as a MBT even if Japan is allowed to sell it overseas.
I don't like the shape of the turret. The top of the turret would deflect a projectile with it's extreme slope, which is desirable. The underside of the leading edge of the turret creates a pocket that would deflect a projectile into the tank. An unfortunate compromise. The same would be true of a projectile striking on the top of the leading edge of the front of the body. Quite a large crotch in the forward face of this tank that other modern tanks designs have tried to minimize.
@mu99ins I agree completely. The Leopard ll has a similar design and I cant help but ask what will happen when a round strikes and gets jammed permanently between the turret and hull. Its as if asking to scoop incomming rounds into a weak spot.
Sure is gentle as anything Japanese, light weight helps szybkicm movement but as practice shows - the speed does not help on the battlefield because it hit is unavoidable in today's missiles and rockets. If you invest in a tank is more durable and tough as possible for a slightly faster tank and so will be hit so you better live than die.
@Nighthawk117 I think it is correct. Every other sources say 44 tons. Unlike the others tanks which designed mainly for open space combat, Type 10 was designed for fighting in urban area. So they made it compact and light weight without sacrificing firepower and armor protection.
Yeah, it is really impressive that they actually managed to pull off 44 tons!!!
Since China threat is becoming real and greater, sooner or later Japanese people will evetually have to agree to change the constitution. For quite a while, Japanese government has been discussing about changing constitution, so they can convert "self defence force" to "military" and have the capability to do first strike before enemy attacks. This also would be great for US. Japan will be able help us militarily when we need real help, instead of sending us money as usual.
yeah, Japan better watch China carefully because China still owe Japan some serious pain payback. There's a score to be settled and the time is approaching to even the score. There's one big old can of whoop-ass waiting to be opened up all over Japan as a gift from China. there's a score to be settled, wrongs to be righted, the face of justice is glaring grimly at Japan's shores. They better start making real tanks very soon, lots of them. And I don't mean "cute" joke tanks.
@MustNotRead Well, Type 10 isn't a joke at all. It is very serious tank, and it is extremely cutting edge. They found the way to designed type 10 compact and light weight without sacrificing firepower and armor protection. It weights only 44 tons. Japanese designed this to be used in urban area. Several M1 tanks were destroyed in urban area of Iraq. Tanks are deisgned to be use in open space. But Type 10 is designed to fight in small space urban area where full size tanks are very vulnerable.
@carrionpvp Japan is no longer under any restriction. As independent nation, they are free to have military power just like any other country. BUT Japanese people are the ones that are currently restricting Japanese military power. Japan's current constitution allows only enough military power to defend Japan, not to attack. Even though they are among the top 10 military in the world, this is why they call their military as "Self Defence Force". Japanese people don't want to change constitution.
Japenese tank. The engine probably has 32 cam shafts per cylinder, runs off of a mix of 93 octane and tentacle-raped schoolgirl cum, and the entire body is made of plastic and aluminum.
hahaha it's an electric pile of shit just like all the imports in America! If your going to build a tank make it big, powerful and above all loud!!! But wait America's still probably holding them back from getting a military. I bet there are still American occupied areas in Japan and Germany
I am not sure if tanks are the most practical defencive solution for Japans moutainous and heavyly urbanized environments. In most countries the tank is ideal since it would control open country, something Japan has very little left of. Japan has more urbanized environments then open country. @phadil What stops them is the United states. they are not allowed to have more than a certain limit in their forces. Only enough for defence. I know Japan HAS the technology to surpass anyone with a military.. fcking dudes will have a fcking big ass robot if not kept under supervision LOL
@reelmagic Half way right... the US forced Japan to write a pacifist constitution after the war. At this point the US would not be opposed to Japan building a more powerful army - the two countries are close allies. Japan does not because 1. The constitution is popular and 2. they don't want to waste the huge amounts of money it would take when they can rely on the US for defense.
This tank is useless! For an elementary electronic counter, you can use the micro-physical laws. and this tank does not move anywhere, and neutralizes the electron is ordained!
@spetsnazcu I don't think you can 'rip off' a tank. It's not a CD we are talking about here lol. But if they wanted to copy the Merkava the Japanese sure could do it.
The japanese were restricted to have an army after WW2 but they do contribute to UN forces and have a couple of US soldiers stationed on a island.Just wanted to inform so you don't look dumb next time.
this time you showed your self dumb. Japan has army for defencife purpose, even they were in coalition with US in Iraq (2005) . Japan enginier group was within UK Multinational Division SE in Basrah region.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wow this is pethetic, japs have yet to build a successful tank because they were only in 1 or 2 wars, in which most of thier combat was done by them drowning on their toy ships or becoming smoldering craters in something thinking that it will help them win a battle, they have never had a need for a tank...
Looks pretty sharp Japanese need any DEFENSIVE systems give me a call---Again I said Defensive Systems--I now know about Article 9 so love to increase Defense!
tank is all about mobility, gun muzzle velocity/calibre, and protection and informatic system. type-10 is lower than some of the other new tanks on gun muzzle velocity because it has a shorter barrel, but they've developed this burst fire machanism which would conpansate that some what.

Erniz2 2 years ago
The japanese were restricted to have an army after WW2 but they do contribute to UN forces and have a couple of US soldiers stationed on a island.Just wanted to inform so you don't look dumb next time.
fatmanontherun 2 years ago
this time you showed your self dumb. Japan has army for defencife purpose, even they were in coalition with US in Iraq (2005) . Japan enginier group was within UK Multinational Division SE in Basrah region.

wow this is pethetic, japs have yet to build a successful tank because they were only in 1 or 2 wars, in which most of thier combat was done by them drowning on their toy ships or becoming smoldering craters in something thinking that it will help them win a battle, they have never had a need for a tank...

Instead of armor pieces, these sorry ass Japs put little plastic splash guards on the side. ROFL!
What good will they do in a battle? That is so funny. That's the typical sneaky Japs at their best. LOL!

tank is all about mobility, gun muzzle velocity/calibre, and protection and informatic system. type-10 is lower than some of the other new tanks on gun muzzle velocity because it has a shorter barrel, but they've developed this burst fire machanism which would conpansate that some what.
