This is the best solo Banjo/vocal performance I've ever heard. I read through the comments to make sure I wasn't being redundant, but I don't see anyone comparing your vocals to Tom Waits, so I am. And that's a good thing!
@HunterRobertson thanks for the kind words. you inspired me to learn this tune; even recorded a banjo/fiddle duet with my 6 string in the tuning you used.
What a vibe! There's a lot of people can play fast, complex, or whatever, particularly on banjo. The greatness of this kind of performance is having that skill, but still giving the music space to speak for itself.
And that's a plastic banjo? Awesome tone for steel strings, in this tuning at least. (I'm usually in the minority that prefer the sound of fishing line or nylgut strings).
Fantastic as always. Still working on my homemade fretless banjo, tho I know I will never be able to make it sound remotely like this. Or have a clue about your tunings. But, I was eying a new old stock chrome harmony pot and skin on Ebay and though tit might channel some whisp of your groove.
@HunterRobertson Hey, thanks for remembering I was working on it!. Slow and steady. Reading up in my Foxfire books on how to tan groundhog skin... Not sure if I have the stones for that, may go for a calfskin head on ebay. And then when it is all done, I still have to learn to play the thing!
That was great... I did this song once on the Tube myself but not with that tuning (gotta try it...) Good hiccups by the end... It helps to have a bit of liquor before playing this one...
@gadaya I liked your video Gael, we've actually got quite a few of the same tunes up! I've been trying Drunken Hiccups on the fiddle, but I've got a ways to go yet.
WOW Hunter, that was great! I had never heard the tune and I love the way it sounds fretless. You are a master player. Haven't heard much of your singing either, nice voice.
