4 years later, everyone is doing ultra books at CES. I remember when this came out it got criticized a lot by everyone. Looking at how Intel is pushing the category nowadays, you have to give apple credit for being one the first companies pushing it to mass market.
400 million transistors in something that small? how do you get 400 million anything into something so small? let alone something that has a function and works for a common purpose????????????????????
im not so exited at no opticle drive. i dont want to have a movie or cd and have to pay more money for something i already have just to watch it on my computer.

@andyt2k Its not a good computer to have on its own and yes you need an optical drive. But it's aimed to be something you travel with and something portable. I have a new one of these and an iMac and I have to say it works great. I don't miss the optical drive because all my movies are already loaded on my iMac and I can access them there and if you have this paired with an iMac or another Mac it is great this is like an extension of my computer without having to carry 20 pounds around.
@andyt2k You can use any Windows or Mac PC with a Optical drive to remote connect for the Air and Mini (and now ALL Macs; great if you remove the Optical for an SSD) to rip movies or install programs.
Honestly, Steve lost me at the idea of getting rid of the optical drive. If I've got a cd already bought that I want to watch, I'm not going to go to iTunes and spend another 10 bucks to rent it. Which, by the way, you only get for a limited amount of time. I'm sure they've lost previous Apple users due to this downgrade.

I actually have to say that I don't like the MacBook Air. It's not that it isn't a good product, but just 2 things I don't like: HDD space and processor clock speed. If I were to get a MacBook laptop out of the whole line, I would go with the 15 inch MacBook Pro. But mainly for the screen size, the processor speed, and HDD space.
I agree with DeltaPhi79. The MacBook Pro has everything you need on a laptop. If Apple can come up with a ultra thin drive built in the Air, then I would give it a second look. But for now, the MacBook or MacBook Pro is the way to go if you are looking for a laptop. Small is good but if you have to buy additional items to complete the main one, then its seems like to much of a hassle. Why not get the All-in-1 product.
Mac steals so much from the Linux community. I'm amazed at how humble the Linux community is and how they dedicate their time to create groundbreaking software and then sit and be happy that some corporation takes their idea and markets it as their own. Linux is the only way to real computing. I'm sorry if you don't agree.

let me just say for some of you this loptops is one off the cheapest and well manufactured loptop off them all just try using windows for a year and see how many time you have to fix and repair one operating system and that loptop/notebook is for people who are always on the go like schoolers etc. but for the normal nerds who stay at home and dont know life outside a house we need that mac because its got a five hour life battery try getting that with the outher windows loptop not gonna happen .

Mac Pro isn't a laptop. Macbook Pro is tho. Mac Pro is the fastest and heaviest desktop computer from Apple. But hey, you're still welcome to the family.
so are you saying it should have "zero" USB ports? only that would be "more awesome". the point of the MacBook Air is it's the first Laptop with "wireless" as the MAIN feature, all other laptops including Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro are really just desktops squeezed into a Laptop form factor. The MacBook Air breaks all the old rules, and succeeded in a major way. It's the perfect balance of form & function for a fair price.
I was very impressed of this notebook: size = amazing (I remember how often I yelled at my notebook because it didn't fit in envelope...*irony*). No, seriously: I was really impressed, till Steve came to the USB thing and the thing with the lacking optical drive.
USB: I still would use a USB-Mouse ... and than that would be it. I couldn't even use a USB-Stick anymore...

Yes, but it runs Vista. I have a VAIO too. I have a VAIO UX280 Micro PC. I put Vista on it. I put a software application on it that makes it talk (adaptive technology for computer users who are blind) - and this was a Vista capable version - the ENTIRE SYSTEM completely CRASHED to the point of no return and I had to have Sony reformat it back to Win XP. Since then I've got a great loathing for Microsoft.
i agree, sony vaio's are great notebooks. probably in the same league as apple (if not, better!) but becuase they run vista etc, it kinda puts them down in the fact that vista (even though it's a great operating system) is too glitchy etc. i prefer xp anyway.

the future is most definitely wireless, and the "success" of something like the mac air is weighed heavily on the timing.
definitely "ahead of its time."

Its cheap compared to what the others offer.
Until these custom Intel chips came out, the ultra thin TZ series had 1.2 core 2 duos or even core 2 solos, and cost more.

Hi, i use a Mac Pro and i am very happy with that Laptop. Apple ist just an incredible company with fantastic products. Apple is a future doer.
The next Laptop is a Mac Air....

Mac Pro isn't a laptop. Macbook Pro is tho. Mac Pro is the fastest and heaviest desktop computer from Apple. But hey, you're still welcome to the family.

so are you saying it should have "zero" USB ports? only that would be "more awesome". the point of the MacBook Air is it's the first Laptop with "wireless" as the MAIN feature, all other laptops including Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro are really just desktops squeezed into a Laptop form factor. The MacBook Air breaks all the old rules, and succeeded in a major way. It's the perfect balance of form & function for a fair price.

I was very impressed of this notebook: size = amazing (I remember how often I yelled at my notebook because it didn't fit in envelope...*irony*). No, seriously: I was really impressed, till Steve came to the USB thing and the thing with the lacking optical drive.
USB: I still would use a USB-Mouse ... and than that would be it. I couldn't even use a USB-Stick anymore...
Optical Drive: Stupid argumentation: Come on, of course I'm gonna download a film for money, if I have the DVD... excellent

but don't forget, that single USB port supports 128 USB Devices, so it's not like you only have "1" USB port.
Belkin also makes a Wireless USB Hub, so innovations march on, but "ports" will fade from use in the PC market from here on out.

it doesnt need to be that thin if it only has one usb drive, no cd/dvd drive, no firewire and probably not that durable.

the sony vaio g11 is the second thinnest notebook in the world, (not too far away from mac air) yet it has 9 hours battery life, and even greater specs for almost the same price!

Yes, but it runs Vista. I have a VAIO too. I have a VAIO UX280 Micro PC. I put Vista on it. I put a software application on it that makes it talk (adaptive technology for computer users who are blind) - and this was a Vista capable version - the ENTIRE SYSTEM completely CRASHED to the point of no return and I had to have Sony reformat it back to Win XP. Since then I've got a great loathing for Microsoft.

i agree, sony vaio's are great notebooks. probably in the same league as apple (if not, better!) but becuase they run vista etc, it kinda puts them down in the fact that vista (even though it's a great operating system) is too glitchy etc. i prefer xp anyway.

the 80 gig hardrive is gonna be slow at 4200 rpm. if you ever used an ipod as a hardrive then you know what i mean.. i want one still

I know but some other Macs can emulate a Windows XP but works as well as if it was Mac, because IT IS a Mac. And my question was if you can do that with this new MacBook Air, because for me is easier to move in Windows but actually like Mac because doesn't crash
