No its a fact, the Vedic civilization predates the Egypsian by 2000 years... there are depictions of dancers on the temples in India, in what are very clearly postures which we now associate with 'belly dance' - even with hip scarves!.. Certainly now 'belly dance' is very middle eastern and developed there a few thousand years ago ...(though certainly not totally Egypsian - for example ancient Greece has its own form of belly dance).. but the ORIGINS are Vedic - wherever it later developed.

Any music can be used for bellydancing. American bellydancers, being from many different backgrounds themselves, dance to the music that moves them, as well it should be.

they're not that good folks, authentic belly dancers always keep their hips moving, these are wannabe telley belley dancers.. the polynesians would make them look like amatuers..check out some of the videos here & u will see the difference.. Leahs' the only one i would watch in this group!
there are dif types of belly dance.. thats the beauty... isolation and movements of body part such as a belly roll is sexy.. not to mention just using only arms-beautiful and graceful.. its not always hips , hip movements 24/7 would get a bit boring

The first move that she taught (the up/down hip motion) is probably the easiest belly-dance step. I wish she'd teach some of the harder steps, or even better ALL the belly-dance steps! I'd LOVE to learn belly-dancing! Fun way to stay healthy & look great =) !
Have you ever seen a dancer called Didem perform? She has gypsy blood in her family, and she is a wonderful performer. What makes bellydancing so special is not were it's from but how so many cultures contribute to it. That's what makes it so beaitiful and rich :-)
I'm American and I can't do Hip Hop, Square Dancing, etc. Not everyone learns their culture's dances. You have to just like dance. I met a Lebanese lady once who did Modern Dance for years. She only picked up Belly dance after she moved to the US.

This is great. Belly dance is dance. It's one of the most ancient styles and is very good exercise and a lot of fun.
Just because some misuse it for sexual provacation doesn't mean that's the intention. Maybe those who see it all that way need to clean out their own minds!
