We'll have to agree to disagree. The best medical care I ever received in my life was Medicaid. I'd LOVE to pay my premiums directly to medicaid and have it again. Now I'm what is called "under insured". I have insurance but the deductables and copays are so high I can't use it!

Consider the fact that Medicaid goes in the hole 6 billion dollars every 3 months and also consider the fact that with the healthcare plan sitting in the Senate this very moment, Medicaid will lose another 40% funding which means no doctor in their right mind will take on Medicaid patients getting on 30 cents on the dollar. Who do you think controls my medical care now? Doctors? That's a laugh. It's my insurance company that says who I can see, when, how often, and how much I'll have to pay. They say what medicines I'm allowed to take, what is medically necessary, what is "not covered". When I was on Medicaid... everything was covered. There was no question of could I have this medicine or that. Could I have this test... could I see this doctor. The last thing when you're sick that you need is to hear No.

I don't think anyone with any brains is expecting it to be free. After all, I paid for my Medicaid with my taxes. But I'd be willing to bet that if I gave the government my current premium for a medicaid like program, I wouldn't have to pay $50 specialist copays and a $500 hospital deductible. There is a huge difference in cost when you reduce a 20% overhead to 3%.
The only thing insurance companies do is take 25-30% of every dollar spent on healthcare for themselves in administrative costs, executive compensation and profits. WHY ARE WE PAYING THESE MIDDLE MEN? MEDICARE FOR ALL AMERICANS!
I'll tell ya, I was on Medicaid at first until my health insurance kicked in 3 month's into my treatment. I was able to see any doctor I wanted. I even got 2 second opinions. More importantly, while I was fighting for my life, I didn't have to be concerned with co-payments and deductibles. I'm all for universal insurance!

The point is not whether we distrust insurance companies. It's can we afford them. I couldn't afford insurance when I found out I was sick, and either could/can millions of others. Those that can afford premiums (I am among them now) still have problems because copayments and deductibles are prohibitively expensive.

I believe in universal healthcare but there should be exclusions; for example, if you've ever been convicted of a felony then you don't get any coverage. Plus, the government needs to invest more money in medical scholarships and better facilities so we have adequate manpower and resources.
I think politicians also get government healthcare as well.... funny how many of the same people who argue against are in fact recipients of Government care, as well as their families
There are HUGE incentives for people to NOT to use preventive medicine in the current system. Health insurance companies constitute the main disincentive. The reason is that people that don't have an insurance policy don't want to lose the opportunity to be accepted into one, and those that have a policy fear that if something is found by a physician, they might lose the opportunity to keep their health insurance. So, fear of denial by health insurance drives down timely prevention.

Kim I haven't read through the comments so I'm not sure how you're doing with your cancer but I want you to do something. Look up United Chiropractic and see what they can do for you. You'd be amazed what a Chiropractor can do to prevent concer from coming back and to bolster your immune system. People are starting to wake up to whats wrong with our health care system. Mine don't, they're gone. In general yes. They grow from one cell, grow to a lump and eventually spread throughout your entire body until it kills you if not treated.
I am nearing the end of what has been a very successful treatment. What was left of the lump was removed from my body and I'm undergoing radiation right now.

I don't know the state of healthcare in Germany, but I highly recommend seeing several doctors to get options. My first 2 doctors wanted to do a double mastectomy on me. The third did chemo first and I ended up having to have a very small lump removed. He saved my breasts.

While no one wants to see people suffer (I Don't) I don't believe national health care will help people who need a high level of care. The high cost to professionals/health agencies, will more than likely force out the "good" doctors and only leave people (doctors) who will be forced to run people through and process them by the numbers... the quality will not go up- it will go down. I wish we could point at one thing the government has gotten involved with and show that it improved.
I would legalize marijuana. Impose a 50% tax on the retail sale. Use the proceeds from the tax to supplement private insurance premiums for health insurance.

1 America needs to introduce a death tax, when you die all your assets over 200k dollars goes to the government.
2 evry one in work pays 3 percent of the tax the have deducted into a national health program.
3 the government passes a free medical care at point of need, (when you walk into a doctors office or a hospital and need care) that evry citazen that can prove they are an american citizen has access to.
Citizens do not want to be taxed, or to have their dead relatives taxed. Introducing tax does not necessarily aid the population enough to be efficient. Investing money into life saving operations may be equitable to some, but there are to many other factors preventing it from happening.

The economy is great, if you like working at Mcdonalds or are retired. A "starting house" will cost you a minimum of $250,000 and that house will be at least 30 years old and over an hour from NYC. All new houses being built cost at least $600,000. Jobs are very hard to come by that pay decently.

Yes, the majority can. About 250 million out of 300 million can afford health insurance. But the rest of us that also work 40 hours a week cannot. Its not a matter of not being a priority. But when something happens and all of a sudden you're not making enough to cover your mortgage anymore let alone food, you can forget about being able to afford healthcare.

I don't have an expensive home. I don't have an expensive car. Yet due to situations beyond our control we lost health insurance and couldn't afford it for 2 1/2 years. When you can't afford your mortgage and you have kids, you can't afford to pay for health insurance. Thats just a fact.

Because the economy doing its "job" has now increased the amount of uninsured people to 47 million. That number will continue to rise as more poor and unhealthy people are thrown off various insurances so that for-profit companies can make more money.

People abuse the health care system because of programs like these. They get tests done and medications they can live without because they don't get the bill. People need to learn how to spend money right. These programs just allow people to go crazy.
I am definitely not saying your got your chemo for nothing. Some people, like you, need it. But there are people who just do whatever. If the doctor says, "hey, maybe we should do this test" even if the don't need it, they'll do it, and it won't cost them. SOME people abuse health care! That's a fact! And there is probably a good deal of people who CHOOSE not to be covered.

I believe in universal healthcare but there should be exclusions; for example, if you've ever been convicted of a felony then you don't get any coverage. Plus, the government needs to invest more money in medical scholarships and better facilities so we have adequate manpower and resources.

There are HUGE incentives for people to NOT to use preventive medicine in the current system. Health insurance companies constitute the main disincentive. The reason is that people that don't have an insurance policy don't want to lose the opportunity to be accepted into one, and those that have a policy fear that if something is found by a physician, they might lose the opportunity to keep their health insurance. So, fear of denial by health insurance drives down timely prevention.

Kim I haven't read through the comments so I'm not sure how you're doing with your cancer but I want you to do something. Look up United Chiropractic and see what they can do for you. You'd be amazed what a Chiropractor can do to prevent concer from coming back and to bolster your immune system. People are starting to wake up to whats wrong with our health care system. I don't know the state of healthcare in Germany, but I highly recommend seeing several doctors to get options. My first 2 doctors wanted to do a double mastectomy on me. The third did chemo first and I ended up having to have a very small lump removed. He saved my breasts.
I wish you all the best too and remember, ignoring the lump does not make it go away.

While no one wants to see people suffer (I Don't) I don't believe national health care will help people who need a high level of care. The high cost to professionals/health agencies, will more than likely force out the "good" doctors and only leave people (doctors) who will be forced to run people through and process them by the numbers... the quality will not go up- it will go down. I wish we could point at one thing the government has gotten involved with and show that it improved.

1 America needs to introduce a death tax, when you die all your assets over 200k dollars goes to the government.
2 evry one in work pays 3 percent of the tax the have deducted into a national health program.
3 the government passes a free medical care at point of need, (when you walk into a doctors office or a hospital and need care) that evry citazen that can prove they are an american citizen has access to.

Citizens do not want to be taxed, or to have their dead relatives taxed. Introducing tax does not necessarily aid the population enough to be efficient. Investing money into life saving operations may be equitable to some, but there are to many other factors preventing it from happening.

The economy is great, if you like working at Mcdonalds or are retired. A "starting house" will cost you a minimum of $250,000 and that house will be at least 30 years old and over an hour from NYC. All new houses being built cost at least $600,000. Jobs are very hard to come by that pay decently.

Yes, the majority can. About 250 million out of 300 million can afford health insurance. But the rest of us that also work 40 hours a week cannot. Its not a matter of not being a priority. But when something happens and all of a sudden you're not making enough to cover your mortgage anymore let alone food, you can forget about being able to afford healthcare.

You can conquer illness when it is in its infancy as opposed to later when its much more expensive and maybe to late to do anything. I don't have an expensive home. I don't have an expensive car. Yet due to situations beyond our control we lost health insurance and couldn't afford it for 2 1/2 years. Stuff happens, not just to poor and not just to those who overspend, but to average people who run into bad luck. When you can't afford your mortgage and you have kids, you can't afford to pay for health insurance. Thats just a fact.

BTW, Education costs a fortune that people cannot afford. Not because they refuse to make sacrifices, because they just can't afford it. Since 1992 inflation has increased over 92%. Higher education in the meantime has gone up over 343%. I know I haven't gotten a 343% raise over the past 15 years. In fact, the poverty level hasn't increased that much either. And things like Pell grants have been cut.

Do you realize, that in England, a system of socialized medicine, 25,000 people die every year unnessicarily, because of, what the World Health Organization stated as, "Third World Cancer Care" no matter what happens, there will be flaws in any system, in the end we have a choice. The government shouldn't control our health care. Doesn't work...More government, Less Civil Liberties! The government is just going to be more involved in your life. Not good! How bout this...How about the government stops taking our hard earned money and then more people can afford health care! Awesome!

The government wouldn't control our healthcare, just pay for it with out tax dollars. With Medicaid you choose your doctors the same way you do with other insurance plans. As for the govt stop taking our tax dollars etc... I pay VERY little in taxes, but do not qualify for medicaid if it weren't for my BC and couldn't afford insurance for my family. This is a common tale. Insurance is simply to expensive.

Pay for it without tax dollars? Is that what you just said? How then does the government pay for it? How? And yes, they would control our health care, they would. It's not the governments job. Show me where in the constitution it says the government must provide for the poor and get everyone health care. It doesn't say that. Anywhere. The constitution is all about freedom...freedom from the government. Civil Liberties. Socialized...not civil liberties.

The Constitution says and doesn't say a lot of things. It also says that black people are 3/5 of a person on a census. Guess what, times change. And I don't think I said anywhere that it would not be paid for. But for a company to pay for medicaid would actually cost the company LESS then most private health care plans.

Yes times have changed. But it's still not the governments job. If you don't like that argument, how about this...First of all, it makes government bigger...Less Civil Liberties...America is all about Civil Liberties, at least it should be. Secondly it only helps SOME people, not all. LESS GOVERNMENT IS THE BEST GOVERNMENT! That's how America should be. The government isn't supposed to be involved in our lives!

Yes, it's sad that people can't afford health care but it's not the governments job. I just don't understand why people think it is their job! Don't people like Civil Liberties? I do! And I don't want the government more involved in our lives! America was made so people could be free from the government. Socialized health care isn't freedom from the government.

Because the economy doing its "job" has now increased the amount of uninsured people to 47 million. That number will continue to rise as more poor and unhealthy people are thrown off various insurances so that for-profit companies can make more money.

It's that companies right to make money. Also, the reason our economy isn't doing so well is because of government intervention. We already have a lot. Big government doesn't fix things. Are you okay with the war in Iraq?

Of course I'm not ok with the war in Iraq. Then again, thats totally off topic. Every company has a right to make money, but that doesn't mean they can't have competition. Look at Medicaid as non-profit competition.

I don't want to pay into medicaid! I pay into it! My friends pay into it. My family pays into it. And we get nothing out of it! So how is that right. I am FORCED to pay my hard earned money to this program that I will never benefit from. Does that sound right to you? It shouldn't. And when the constitution says Life, it doesn't mean health care, it's more like protecting the people from threatening countries.

Also how many of these 47 million choose to not have insurance. Probably a good deal of them. Also, everyone, EVERYONE has access to health care. you can just walk into your doctors office and have things taken care of. It might cost you a bit more than a person with insurance, but at least you have access to health care.

People abuse the health care system because of programs like these. They get tests done and medications they can live without because they don't get the bill. People need to learn how to spend money right. These programs just allow people to go crazy.

I am definitely not saying your got your chemo for nothing. Some people, like you, need it. But there are people who just do whatever. If the doctor says, "hey, maybe we should do this test" even if the don't need it, they'll do it, and it won't cost them. SOME people abuse health care! That's a fact! And there is probably a good deal of people who CHOOSE not to be covered.

But if people need something, what about their church? Family? Friends? There are also organizations who help the poor...AND THEY ARE NOT RUN BY THE GOVERNMENT!
