  • Love this ad.....the song goes so well <3

  • Doesn't show the divorce and emotional trauma the child goes through as he blames himself... he never recovers

  • is this a christmas advert?

  • @tivron

    i dont think so...

  • We had an assembly on this today. The teacher said it makes him cry.. :)

  • look how short the husband turns after the last transition 1:07

  • @MiffyJef Maybe his spine start to fuse together. It happened to my grandfather.

  • :) beautiful x

  • I think this was a great choice for the Media Exam, actually enjoyed watching it

  • Such an epic advert. The person who created this and matched it with this song is a genius!

  • I'll admit it, this makes me more emotional than the current Christmas ad.

  • could somebody plz tell me what the song is?

  • @allenlinli read the title of the video.... :o)

  • My life is up to the 29 second mark and I can't wait to live the next 92 seconds.

  • Red is definitely her colour.

  • Hey Caldezonia socking AD is so like this AD, same script? Same music? Is it legal to produce AD like this? Who was the first? Caldezonia or J.L?

  • @TheKlakier1981 John Lewis have completely ripped off Caldezonia there, JL two years after the original and they are identical. Same song but different singer, same concept, definitely not allowed.

  • Theres got to be a black guy in every video isn't there

  • @TheSkrillexbass Black guy so what?

I bet your shirt is made in india, Yr jeans in bangledesh and yr undies in china so relax

  • @DDFF232 Are you spying on me...how did you know? O.o

  • Just shows us how simple, mortal and yet so beautiful we all are.

  • <3 this advert!!

  • I still love this advert, however I just get a little disappointed sometimes that they don't portray the times this character was growing up in, it looks she lived her whole in life in 2010. However, this is still an amazing advert!

  • Hard to tell it's not the original!!

  • it makes me wonder just how many oap's i see everyday that were hot bitches!!!!!!!!!

  • if only life was as simple as how it is potrayed in this ad...

  • thumbs up if you cried at the end :'(

  • on wikipedia the deleted scene was meant to be a grave

  • Fuck you!,,

  • Fuck you!!!!! I can't listen to Billy

  • probably the most moving advert of all time. Prefer it to the one with Ellie GOulding.

  • I bet the scene of her coming back from work was put in to avoid any sexism claims :p. Sneaky John Lewis

  • beautiful piece of something.love itx

  • The ad is cleverely made. It's the only good aspect of it. It's quite an unhappy advert really. I suppose it's how you look at it, but all in all, quite depressing!

  • Am I the only one who thinks that this advert makes life look dull?

  • This song sorta makes me cry.

  • It seems technology stays at the same point throughout their whole lifetime!

  • sooo depressing :'(

  • Love the song, loathe the product and how "normal" that timeline of events are... You wish life was that simple!

  • i remember this advert, it just came into my mind, couldn't remember the name of the song, it's lovely and is about nice things happening in life. Lovely song xoxoxxx

  • call me a cynic but I do enjoy the random addition of the black man to avoid being labelled racist...

  • AS LEVEL MEDIA EXAM BROUGHT ME HERE!

  • Thank goodnes John Lewis is here to ensure that people in the 21st century still perceive women as homemakers and nothing more...how insulting!

  • billy joels version is better dont judge its my opinion

  • Love this. Couldn't get the song out of my head and I had no idea what it was - it was driving me crazy! So glad I managed to track it down.

  • GCSE media analysis :')

  • Media exam right here, although i did put she wore pink and not red, hmm could of got extra marks if i could actually remember stuff =\

  • john lewis produced 10, 60 and 90 second versions of this advert, which is why our media exam didn't include all the clips in this one, because they showed us the 60 second version

  • pretty sure i made up a few things in the exam..

  • Thumbs up if media AS brought you here

  • @xxxjakeyboixxx1 Really glad you guys are studying stuff like this. I'm 28 now, did Media A-level eleven years ago, ended up at Oxford, and have never looked back - but the Internet wasn't as developed back then. It's good to know it's changed with the times and that, presumably (hopefully), viral videos form a large part of what you're studying.

  • I swear they cut some part out in the exam...

    If not ...Im fucked

  • @caphy1 No they definitely did cos I was just watching it like that wasn't in it! Neither was that! Lol

  • lol this was in my AS media exam, Couldn't be bothered with the exam so i just wrote every single chocolate bar i knew and for section B, wrote the highlights of my morning in detail HEHE

  • @tinashe008 seriously?!

  • I swear the media exam advert was different to this, if not im screwed :l

  • @thatstelladog yeah they shortened it down for the exam :)

  • This was the advert for my AS media exam :) really relieved when I saw it :) it's a really nice advert and song :)

  • Also I wrote about how she is a stereotypical woman as all the males are lifting the heavy furniture and she is straight to the kitchen ftw.

  • Thumbs up if you had to watch this multiple times for your media exam and got that bloody song stuck in your head :P

  • Watching this again now, I realised how much missed in my media exam. Well that a fail. FML

  • @vLoGiCzZ I know exactly how your feeling :L

  • Media a level exam ? xD

  • Lovely song. Strange thing to get in my media exam. Why was it only a minute long in the exam?? I also now realise i lied about a few things. I said the tunnel was red (it is slightly but it's actually blue. damn).

  • My media advert was not this this ¬_¬

  • @XxsumeraxX I was going from waffling about how it represents stereotypical women to zombies for section B, hah

  • This Was My Media AS-Level Moving Image today ... How are women represented in this advert??? WTF >> cmon now, be serious, it doesnt show a woman in the kitchen :O

  • @XxTheTowlsonxX 0:45 yes it does..

  • @XxTheTowlsonxX omg same i do media to.. lol cnt beleev i actually youtubed it :')

  • @XxTheTowlsonxX Yea me to, except in mine the advert was different, it was edited/cut in a differnt order to this one

  • Comment removed

  • just had this as the moving image for my AS level media exam.

Thumbs up if that brought you here.

  • @CarolineOProductions

    I loved it!

  • @18Duffee was good wasnt it! Felt quite emotional by the end of it haha

  • @CarolineOProductions

Haha yeah. I couldn't help sing along!

  • this is such a beautiful advert, if not my favourite ever. I cant get enough of it. John Lewis just have something, their adverts are always perfect and they always help rising stars. GOD BLESS YOU JL!

  • This advert makes me want to be a kid again. I feel like I've wasted it.

  • why was this complained about? i love this

  • so wonderful :)

  • FAES PAYIN?

  • Thumbs up if Gross Gore brought you here.

  • That is soo amazing, I love this advert, amazing...

  • @madbaddog05 ali is a boss!! <3

  • This advert gives me chills it's so amazing!

  • almost perfect, would have been more effective if they showed her growing up through differant decades aesthetically , i.e beggining as a little girl during the second world war, being a hippie in the 60's, boogying in a club amongst a sea of great colour and wild hair do's of the 80's etc, it seems to be modern day throughout her whole life, and also her husband shrinks by a good couple of inches while she remains the same near the end! still gorgeous though.

  • i've just watched this on tele, i just love this!!!!

  • the best ad ever on tv thank you john lewis

  • Beautiful piece of film =)

  • wow !!! i just amazed man n kissed my mom right away

  • The new Guillemots album 'Walk The River' is out now!

  • where are all the robots?

  • i'd go as far as saying it is one of the most well created, beautiful adverts of all time. i also don't think it was played enough.

  • In my opinion, it's would be in the top 5 of the best ads ever made!!!

  • No one actually notices how the father in the story loses 2 foot in height at 1:10

And the entire ad is set within 1 generation!

  • still brings a tear to the eye!!!

  • Ahhh dats a good ad:)

  • nice ad, lovely song which i shall download. There are some right weird comments, thinking too much about the ad. Picking out every detail.

  • @samgordon86 Calm down, the advert is good. The song, as all songs are, subject to taste. It is simple and shows a woman through her life and is done very well with good transitions and actors. What is there not to like. Obviously they are not going to show her at the sad points of her life, they want people to be happy and to buy their products. And your last line, I think simply says something about you. "Always look on the bright side of life".

  • @samgordon86 wow its a fucking ad mate your life must be misrable and shit if you get that worked over by a fucking ad.

  • This is the perfect advert.. Perfect childhood, perfect marriage, perfect family, perfect like.. Thumbs up if you hope you grow up like this :)

  • this made me appreciate my mum much more for some reason.... she's been away for a month for work and I really miss her <3

  • thumbs up if this sent a shiver up your spine!

    (what a beautiful song)

  • One of the most effective adverts thats ever been made, up there with the "He waits" Guinness advert

  • What a fucking waste of time btw it's not the same person 'growing up' .

  • @GameFuzionZz Your comment is a fucking waste of time reading

  • @GameFuzionZz Because ofcourse people would spend a lifetime filming the same person to create one advert :/

  • beautiful... simply beautiful. <3

  • The billy Joel version's better

  • Love how the man randomly shrinks at the end.

  • @Dwalters1998 I know! It really does go fast: it brings tears to my eyes :'-(

  • It's a great ad but it's also quite depressing because it make you realise how fast time flies and in the end we all grow old and die

  • Anyone else spotted how time seems to jump from many years ago to the modern day as soon as they reach university, but then stands still and never moves?

Either way, it's a good advert but doesn't accurately reflect British life. If it did, you'd see the divorce, the woman walking out with the kids and half the household possessions and the man going back to John Lewis to try and rebuild his life :/

  • @UK31337 erm, that doesn't happen to everyone, you know. I live in a happy, un-divorced family and my parents hardly ever argue.

  • @lauraHPFAN

the hold add is not about parents that agure

  • @UK31337 only 45% of British marriages fail, so the majority stay together. So it isn't right to say they should get divorced because it isn't an accurate portrayal.

  • Simply The Greatest Advert Of All Time.

  • middle class in all its glory

  • i love ellie goulding's version of your song but they advert version seems all out of time, and therefore, this wins hands down :)

  • @wereallfakingit1 Ellie Gouldings version if terrible! got nothing on Elton John...

  • @saaamtube im not comaparing her to elton john am i? Im comparing her to this.

  • This is my favourite advert of all time :D

  • i luv this commercial!!!

  • Crying to an advert for a bloody retailer - thanks John L

  • omg so cute!

  • ar amhas

  • Made I sad

  • The most moving advert ever ! Masterful advert for John Lewis

  • Life's short.

  • Amazing advert! although it seems like its the same year each time she grows up..looking at the clothes and objects :p

  • i like this song and the advert, ITV well done as you also took mw too this ad!!

  • Thumbs up if ITV brought you here.

  • itv brought me here!

  • This made my cry my eyes out. Such a beautiful song by Billy Joel, and a lovely commercial too :)

  • Is that Nicola Bryant at 1:31?

  • This ad was shortlisted for the ad awards, look it up and vote!!! COME ON JOHN LEWIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • this claim is so beautiful:X

  • tht is amazing

  • This is just about the best advertisement there's ever been. It always brings a tear to my eye. Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song, and the film tells a story which is close to perfect in concept and execution.

I like how at 0.44 the bump in her belly seems to have come from something she's just taken out of the fridge :)

  • if only this happened really....

  • almost brought me to tears

  • this is one of my fav adverts

  • This made me so happy yet sad. I'm playing this at my wedding :)

  • This ad makes my wife cry, because she realises she's half way through life. I think it's because she's still with me and she's found no better.

  • i loe all of john lewis' adverts !!! they have good ideas :D x

  • Don't you just love John Lewis adverts :'}

  • Aren't these montage-of-someone's life adverts depressing? They always have money, health + good-looks all their life + find true love at univesity - or even school.

  • @LLydarth it's john lewis' grand plan to make us feel inadequate.

  • shame this song's about a prostitute.

  • @lampard554 No it's not. Quote from Wikipedia: "It is a love song about a modern woman, with whom he falls in love for her quirks as well as her flaws."

  • It shows you just how brief life is.

  • for some reason this ad and this song always brings tears to my eyes

  • wow that baby bump looked sooo real! lol

  • It's the best shop in the UK. Good quality department shop.

  • What do John Lewis sell exactly?

  • that cat in the video is ridiculously fast! Did anyone else notice? :p

  • This song reminds me of Toy Story.

I miss being a kid and playing toys.

  • @cheshful Your never too old to play with toys, lifes too short to grow up.

  • @FlyingPuma112 LMFAO

  • she died

  • This
