i learned this as Half step, whole step. and a much simpler formula 221 2221....... 2 representing 2 half steps(semitones) and 1 whole steps(whole steps).
Thank you! I've played piano for years and never realized how/why the sharps/flats were located in specific keys. Of course this won't make it easier to some of the keys, but at least now I'll know why the flats are there :)

Thanks for this formula, and all of your videos. You should see how I've added this to my guitar lessons. Once again and many more. Thanks for posting your videos.
For anyone that doesn't like the T and ST. Personally I learned W W H W W W H. W for whole step H for half step and I feel that is a little bit easier to remember.
Razwithz. Let me tell you what I understood. Remember he is using the pattern T T ST so he needed a semitone right there thats why of the b and on the third example he used the # because he needed a semitone. I hope you get it
You are simply amazing!!! Oh my gosh.. words can't even describe. These lessons are VERY very easy, so I blew through 1/4 in the first day. If I had more time I would have done them ALL at once, but it's very time-consuming! lol. I ever see you (which isn't likely cause I live in Calif.) I may just walk up to you and hug you!! :)

Whole step and half step is the way I learned it, and kind of less of a mouth full haha. Just easier to say whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. or wwhwwwh. But I really appreciate this man, I am trying to study up and refresh my memory so that I can ace a proficiency exam to test out of fundamentals of music. You are awesome!!
Why couldn't learning be easy or at least learning the majors simple. I just hate it when I get something then like I blank out and it's like, GOD! Why is this so hard! Anyway ur other vids r helpful. I'll just practice some more.
it's just like maths when people explain it to me i completely understand it, but when i finally going to do this on my own i don't have a clue. does anybody also have this or better had this problem, what's the solution ??
Dude, you're so awesome for putting up these videos. I'm going to college now to become a music major and I've been using your videos to recap lessons in class and also get extra detail in other places. these are a big help
@TedEdFred21 he is not doing fashion video, besides the way that the shirt and the jacket are half open, seems that he only put those clothes for the video :)Andrew, great work , keep on!!!
Hey i have an excelent way to remember the patturn for major scales...i learned them as whole and half tones instead of semitones so we had wwhwwwh and the way my band teacher had us remember it was waffle-waffle-house-waffle-waffle-waffle-house i never forgot it lol
I am sure i want to be just like you! Thank you for helping me reach my dream. I hope i get to the end from now xD without getting owned by the terminology.
Another easy way to remember T-T-ST-T-T-T-ST is to look at the keyboard and start at C. Then just see if there's a 'whole tone' or a 'semitone' between the white keys (when you're moving upwards). If you know the piano it should be a piece of cake to remember the pattern.
You could also just count the black keys (from C). first there are 2 black keys (2 whole notes), then there is a gap (1 semitone), then there are 3 black keys (3 whole notes), and finally a gap (1 semitone). :)
This is awesome!!! Thank you so much for your videos. I NEVER understood why the scale patterns were what they were (my music theory teacher in high school never bother to explain it...he hated voice student thought they were inept theory wise-he was a band teacher). Keep this up I'm learning A LOT more then I ever did in that class.
Hello I'm back. I would just like to mention to "beginners" to hang in there and continue with the videos. I'm not an expert at quickly recognizing all the notes on the grand staff yet (still at a little bit of a fumbling stage, and it's been a week since I looked at any of this). However, I am continuing on with video #10 now. The point is, is that I encourage other students to continue on as well, and keep referring back to the basics. It takes time to get those down. Thank you, Andrew.
@realjuvelive no it is B flat understanding the circle of fiths will help you understand why... its because you would have both an A and an A# in the key of F major...the rule is not to have 2 of the same letters / notes in a key signature
@realjuvelive Because when we take the scale formula into account (Whole-Tone, Whole-tone, semitone, Whole-tone, Whole-tone, Whole-tone, semitone) you'll see that F to G is a Whole tone, G to A is a Whole tone.. what you looking for next is the next SEMItone up, and a semitone up from an A is a Bb. A B# would actually be a whole tone and a half above it. Therefor the F scale looks like...
F (WT)> G (WT)> A (ST)> Bb (WT)> C (WT)> D (WT)> E (ST)> F
If you change the word tone to whole step and semi tone to half step, which is how I learned it. You can remember the sentence why wont he wear white when hot to always know how to form the scale :)
Learned a lot from your How to Play Piano series. Enjoy your current series also. You are my piano teacher. I learn theory faster than playing. I really enjoy the learning and playing. Thank you very much.
I will become a better guitarist thanks to you i mainly play metal music, if i have money i will buy a keyboard so i can learn it trough your other videos
That's the key of the piece you are playing for example G major only has one sharp(F) so there's only one next to the claf and F major only has one b (B) so a b appears next to the claf.
This is a bit more advanced than the video, but I'll try to explain it. The sheet with the 3 sharps (#) will be in A major, and the 3 notes which would go up a semi-tone are F, C and G. (Check that the sharps are on these lines / spaces). For the flats (b) this is Eb major and the notes B, E and A go down a semi-tone. Hope this helps.
This lesson really helped me sort things out. Thank you so much.

How can you tell the scale of a song when your reading sheet music?
leadarle 2 months ago
@leadarle By looking at the sharps/flats. For example, if there is one flat, it is either F Major or D Minor.

@Razwithz i think it depends on what keys you are using for example in g# major you have F#....In F flat major you have B flat..<3
kaye988 10 months ago
@Razwithz when you build a major scale everything has to go in order of letter names.
so get rid of all the sharps and flats when you write the scales and just put in all 7 letter names
then add your accidentals in. Bb C D Eb F G A Bb is right instead of Bb C D D# F G A Bb because we didn't use at least some type of E in it

@Michaelpe same theory.. the 3rd-4th key and 7th-8th key will always be the semitone in major scale..

That's the key of the piece you are playing for example G major only has one sharp(F) so there's only one next to the claf and F major only has one b (B) so a b appears next to the claf.
