I'm not usually of the Republicans' side, but he probably wanted to be home for all the Veteran's Day Parades and the like. The only reason he was still in DC was because of the Saturday vote. But, he probably could have been briefed on a secure teleconference link or something.
Republicans do not believe in living in Washington or working more than four days a week on federal legislation. They want to be available for media and photo opportunities back in their home districts.
