This is one of those singers that when they speak, sound normal, but once they "sing" they begin to pronounce words incorrectly and change the shapes their mouth makes to say words. I never understood the connection.
Very nasal though...when she sings, even though she doesn't sound like that when she talks...
i love this video and i wish she'd done the track in piano... but she made her choice and the guitar was lovely... still i dunno... people are missing out on this
Honestly, despite whether it's "simple" or not, give the woman a break. She deserves an insurmountable amount of praise for her instrumental work, especially on "Ys" as well as her incredible talent for lyricism. She is probably the best female lyricist of the decade. "Peach Plum Pear" is simple too, but it's probably her most popular song. All in all, she's shown her ability to compose elaborate songs, so she deserves to break away from that once in a while.
it was set to be released around about now but i guess they pushed it back, she is playing in australia in january which i'm hoping is a sign of imminent release
In "W" magazine, December's issue, it has a brief feature on her and says she just comepleted her new album. Hopefully that means it will be out early next year! Dragcity Records will post when releases are eventually coming, so I keep hoping they'll release that definite information soon- maybe after or before her Australian tour. For now, I re-visit this and other new songs posted on youtube for a fix until that amazing album comes along. :)
There's a fair bit of complicated piano skills in this song too, 1:30 - 1:50 are far from basic chord patterns. Joanna played piano long before harp, in the band The Pleased she played keyboard before going solo.

Her piano skew closer to basic than to complicated as evidenced here and elsewhere. Perhaps you're not aware of what two hands are capable of doing with a piano.
Perhaps relatively it is, but there are many musicians who claim to be piano players, and I much prefer the complexity of this composition. I refuse to understate it as 'basic', though it's most likely just a matter of perspective. I can definitely hear the dominate 'basic' parts of it, but if the entire song was 'basic' I would be just as quick to agree. I'm not judging her based soley on this video, but also personal experience from her live performances, so forgive me if i sound a tad biased.
Ys was gigantic, epic, sweeping, and just really huge. When I say she most likely wont ever surpass it in scope, I mean i doubt she could ever do something again so epic and gigantic. I know her songs are all epic in their own ways and scales, but...
I don't know. Just forget it. I don't know how else to explain myself.
She resembles Chloe Sevigny at 0:08 when she leans to drop the water bottle looking down...

well clearly she's had less practise with a piano than a harp. i don't see what your point is. have you seen what her two hands can do on a harp?

her voice has matured a lot since the MEM days. I like her use of vibrato in the new songs. They're all slow and beautiful, but not once boring.
Nothing could ever surpass Ys, at least in scope, but I have a feeling her next album will come pretty damn close.
squirtgunrobbery 3 years ago 5
That's ridiculous. She'll surpass all her albums, one by one.
gluntford 3 years ago
Thats why i said "at least in scope".
squirtgunrobbery 3 years ago
what does that even mean?

it means like...

it is either called Ribbon Bows or Barbara.

It is absolutely NOT called Barbara. She made a JOKE that she was going to call it Barbara because so many of her songs are named after females.
