If you like this movie you should have read the story it was based on. It was called Vacation 58 and was a short story in National Lampoon. It was probably the funiest thing they ever published. Although the movie takes place in the early 80s it follows the story pretty closely.

I love this movie. My family took a cross country trip across America around the time of this movie's (1982/'83) release b/c we were moving. I was 6-7 years old and remember it fondly. While we didn't have anywhere near as many wacky adventures or go to Wally World (or even Disney World) like the Griswolds, we stopped at many goofy historical markers my dad wanted to see and did sight seeing. This movie captures the spirit of the family road trip very well, even if it's exaggerated for comedy.

Has anyone ever been to the roadside attractions as shown on the title sequences? I know most of them are still standing. But can anyone remeber the tower of pizza? I read that it went out of business years ago but it's not in greenbrooks ny. It's in Grennbrooks nj. Can anyone remember what the hats boots gas station was like before it was moved? If anybody could give me info and can remember what it was like going inside these roa side attractions, that would be great.

@VOXS2 There was talk of "Australia Vacation," written by Chase and Eric Idle. The rumor I read was that the Griswolds would end up hiring Crocodile Dundee as their outback guide, as Chase and Paul Hogan are good friends. That would be have been cool, but the "Vacation" movies are by Warner Bros. and the "Crocodile Dundee" movies are by Paramount, so it probably couldn't have happened. Chase also said that aside from a few Aussie gags, he and Idle just couldn't really get the scrip to work.

But i still believe it would of been or be quite fantastic to see another national lampoon vacation movie After all Chevy chase is the one to be in the front roll of all of the attention.These films was fantastic such as the european vacation the vegas vacation the christmas one and such. But a newer one would be just as good as the rest. Tho not sure if there will be one. However different actors wanna be a similar film of lampoon vacation.
