just a guess, but since giraffes aren't native to Japan, the word would have been introduced much later and is usually written in katakana, indicating a loan word, altho from what language I'm not sure

Another reason is that Japanese don't know how to write the word Kirin. Ask any japanese to write the kanji for it and they'll be like "muzukashiiiii" hahaha. So if you want to impress a japanese person, learn the Kanji for Kirin. It's not too difficult, but there is about 51 strokes.

My guess is that because the word is wrtten in katakana, "kirin" probably comes from a country outside Japan. Typically, foreign loan-words aren't given kanji, so maybe that's why. Of course, I'm just guessing here!
