The young man's tone is not bad; it is quite good. Remember that hi fidelity is lacking, to say the least, in this format. Also, keep in mind that the contrabass instruments of all types sound best in large halls where the greater space gives profound reinforcement to the low sounds. Furthermore, contrabass instruments of all types are preeminently ensemble instruments; they reinforce the 8' bass and allow the harmonics of the ensemble as a whole to bloom.

Yes, and a lot of training... but is a terrific instrument ....

I hope the tone is just bad because you are new to that instrument. (This is in no way an insult at you, since "The first time that I played my contrabass clarinet" won't sound to good)

Yes, it's a BBb, just play along on a piano if you aren't used to determining such low pitches by ear. Ridobasi takes his ax down to bottom C and lower.

A friend of mine was a session musician and symphony player in the 50's and 60's. He once played a huge old contra BBb that he affectionately called "old spider-legs" because it sat on a pedestal with several legs for balance. He told me that when he hit the bottom note, the vibration made his head oscillate up and down!

to range the low c you need to press two keys that is located near to the thumb right finger.

But the Paperclip is one instrument that has so far eluded me, and since you won't give me yours, I'll have to find a pre-war Conn somewhere...
