Exodus 20:11-16 states the requirement for the payment of the half shekel for the service of the tabernacle. It is a matter of history (largely Josephus) that we learn about the moneychangers and their fraudulent practices in the temple. They used "false balances" to weigh the coins. Proverbs 11:1 says "A false balance is an ABOMINATION to the Lord." . It is easy to see why the Lord would be extremely angry since they were robbing and oppressing the poor by fraud for private gain.

Josephus was an independent witness with no motive to lie, he may have been wrong but he had no reason to lie.

He is important because he confirmed that Jesus was a real person, not a myth.
