  • Not to be a troll or anything, but why does it say 1902 when this was made in 1988?

  • @SuperRumpelstiltskin why does it say do you think ?

  • Sibelius wrote and first presented it in 1902 and the recording was by Leonard Bernstein in 1988.

  • entre les couleur y goût on ne discute pas, but for me the Levine-Berlin rec is the best

  • You can see and hear that Mr. Bernstein isn't respecting Sibelius' music very much, at least not this work.

  • 6:20 "something big is coming"

    6:35 - Thats a wompin bass drop.

  • This is the best. Everyone else should shut up and fuck off.

  • @Numboss numboss, friend ! i didn t forget you great sibelian, i m still waiting for your videos about your passion on sibelius, i m also glad you think this is the best...

  • @13Orcun

I do not agree. It is still an impressive performance, but as always, Bernstein is mannered and exaggerating, sometimes bombastic. The pause at 8.12 and the slowering at 15.22 are very mannered and at 20.54 there is no flow, the players are sawing. The triumphant final movement is showpiece america. No , I'm not overwhelmed. Barbirolli (not the HMV one) is my favourite.

  • @berrik500 i didn t say that i think this is the best, i ll say my opinion after focussing on it again, it was much time to not listening this, colin davis, barbirolli, salonen are the bests for me in general, after paavo jarvi kullervo, i ll look for his sibelius symphonies records

  • @Numboss

Well, you stated that in no uncertain terms. Totally agree (minus the f-word, haha).

  • @Numboss : it's not remotely the best. He never reaches any emotional peak, and without them the music is just frustrating. I appreciate your tolerant attitude, though.

  • @LoverOfDebussy I must have been drunk when I left that over the top comment.. Of course there's every reason to dislike this interpretation of Sibelius, if that's how one feels. I shouldn't have said 'shut up and f**k off".That's just stupid. I personally just find this version very moving, with very satisfying emotional peaks. We all hear the same thing differently I guess. As for the 'best', do you have a favourite orchestra/conductor with the Sibelius 2?

  • @LoverOfDebussy Turn up your speakers and listen again! =p

  • Stupefacente!

  • This is awful music making.

  • @MeterNYC Perhaps you should have your hearing examined!

  • It's difficult to me to say what i think in english, in french:

Cette symphonie est remarquable, 1ere fois que je l'écoute réellement, j'en suis absolument fan!!

très profond, plein d'élément intéressant, je comprend pourquoi elle est si connu ,, mes passages préféré sont a 6:37 et 14:09 , ils m'ont carrément fait pleurer , la fin est sublime rare sont les symphonies, en dehors de celle de Mahler, qui m'ont remuer autant

Horngasm, beau jeu de mot ;)

Merci beaucoup pour ce lien! bernstein<3

  • 6:37 !!!!!!

  • Thanks !

  • Anyone know what year this recording was made?

  • @svandorn88 1988, you can see it at the end of the video.

  • Just... so... slow. Admittedly, there's slightly more line than in the deathly first two movements, but it's like wading through treacle. Plus really random articulations in the brass.

  • @Haeronthegreat I completely agree

  • @Haeronthegreat: Listen again, and again - though maybe to a more emotionally powerful version, like Dorati's old lp version, or another old one, Anthony Collins on London. Bernstein is the one guy I'd have thought would draw every last ounce of emotion from the last movement; but he didn't!

  • That's the most wonderful I'd ever heard!

  • The most touching part for me starts with 16:01 I almost start crying here!!!

  • @Terezush No, starting with 15:58

  • This piece is amazing to play. I look forward to playing it again. Great videos. Thank you so much!

  • SHOW DE SINFONIA!

  • 5:55でバーンスタインがにやっとしているのだが、

    あれはオーボエの出来に満足したからなのかな!

  • @laertesdd: Nothing compared to L'Histoire du Soldat... that took 10 years off my life and I only did it once.. If you know it, you'll understand.

    But we digress....

  • @SuperMovieFan85, Yes, I did. Played percussion and timpani for several Canadian and American orchestras, shows, etc from the late 60's. Favourite drums: Ringers. Favourite conductor, Klaus Tennstedt. Least favourite conductor: Erich Leinsdorf. (To work with, that is.)

  • @rerakoke: I played timpani for several key orchestras around North America for 40 years, and had the opportunity to torture my wrists hundreds of times with this piece (they still hurt ;) ) the most exciting finales were always the ones that were not slowed to a crawl, but stayed the tempo, and let the final chord do its magic. I sometimes think that most Sibelius pieces (like Finlandia) would have been easier to play if I had a vibrator in each hand instead of mallets...

  • @yttreblemaker Excuse me for asking, but did you really play timpani?

  • @yttreblemaker

then i don't wanna imagine what happened to you after having performed nielsen's 4th... one year sanitarium? ;-)

  • Versión definitiva. Filarmónica de Viena como casi siempre, excelente. Bernstein inspirado. Irrepetible...

  • Finnish Spring time!

    1:48

  • Sibelius es uno de mis compositores favoritos. Muy buena versión ¡¡¡ bravo desde España !!!

  • I dunno... Every thing I hear Bernstein do with the Vienna Philharmonic is so middle-of-the-road pedantic. From Beethoven's 9th to this. At best, the finale to the 2nd symphony can sound exciting and dramatic. Here, the combination of the VPO and Bernstein make it sound like someone towing a tractor-trailer through the mud with it's brakes on. The ending is loud and too slow with no drama, no finesse. If this were the Symphony's first performance, it would never be heard of again.

  • @yttreblemaker so why are you wasting your time listening to the VPO with Bernstein? and who are you, anyway, to state that the ending is too slow, Mr. Sibelius?

  • @yttreblemaker I don't know about the rest of Bernstein's performances with the VPO, but you're spot on about this one.

  • Mr Bernstein is not only a piano player and a conductor but also a percussionist at 3:21!

  • Now that was time very well spent. Great value/time ratio on this one. Bravo 13Orcun!

  • Just think what a society we'd have if this video had 1/1000 the hits of Justin Bieber.

  • Ahhh the waiting, the longing and then finally the pure BLISS at 7.30!

  • Thank you for this, really stupendous performance!!!

  • That was the most beautiful thing I heard in my life.

Leonard Bernstein is the best. So much fun to watch.

  • I´m looking for some studyscores, does anyone from where I can get them?

  • @Paganbeast Wikipedia has a lot of sibelius in some database partnered with or incorporated by the wikimedia foundation. Depending on copyright in your country, you may be able to access a full or condensed score, or individual parts for the four movements.

  • @HighKingTurgon Thanks a lot, but I also found some study scores at stretta-noten (it was a little bit tricky to find).

  • ...maybe The best symphony of all..

  • And here, to stretch every tempo beyond all recognition, it's LEONARD BERNSTEIN! Another example may be found in finale of the Tchai 5. But why should I grouse? It's a supernal rush. watch?v=2pypUXtDgX0

  • such gratitude and reverence in Bernstein's face at the very end. I want to be a conductor and experience THAT.

  • dude!! Bernstein jumps like three feet off the podium at the reinstatement of the third movements vivace theme!!!! holy balls

  • This is so cool. It one of the best classical movement in the world!

  • @Guitrdude I totally agree with you.

  • Thanks for uploading this. This performance is really fantastic and emotional. The ideal performance of this wonderful piece. I haven't heard a performance as good as this one yet, and probably won't for at least a while.

  • Our marching band's doing an arrangement of this for our show next year! If I remember, I'll be sure to post it as a video response or something. We played a few already written parts today in class and it sounds just amazing.

  • Absolutely genius :)

  • 21:19 HORNGASM

  • @fledgehog :D

  • @13Orcun Doesn't sound like a horn to me. Maybe i've just misunderstood your comment! Great recording btw......love it!!!

  • @93DGJ it s not my comment. i m glad you like it.

  • @fledgehog I got to play that my first year in orchestra. It made all the half notes at concert d worth it. : D

  • 2. saniyede ayyas tavirlar icerisinde.

  • @hKNinan 1000. izleyen sen oldun heralde. tespit iyi yalnız.
