I'm going to say the song is about a young person about to enter into marriage and hope for a happy life. However either through divorce or through a breakup they realized their life as they thought it would be, white picked fences, kids, etc would not come to pass or is very unlikely to.

I think it is important this sort of website or interviews where the authors can tell the listeners what the meaning of their songs are, even if the listeners can make up their own interpretations. I find the similar importance with painters and writers where too often people jump to conclusions and make their own interpretation for the authors of either songs, paintings or books. I wonder if this comes from the nature of people to wish for something...
