  • not sure how I got here but I watched the whole video :) interesting stuff

  • Fantastic. Good video

  • Great Video

But it kind of defeats the purpose if you can't use this test on premium silver coins without doing damage to there value.

  • If you go thru Apmex or Gainesville, where do they store your gold or silver? Would a dealer let you perform this test? Iam looking for quarters pre-1964, they are $5 a piece, where do you find them? Finding a reliable, proffesional service is the problem. Good video.

  • am i made of silver? Lets find out with that acid!

  • if i'm getting into the silver industry, how to i test the silver or gold without ruining it?

  • good info dude, thanks.

  • @billythekid602 thanks for watching!

  • Wel how you going no till you payed for it anyway lol assholle ahahhaha

  • Thanks for sharing, just a thought but if you could hold a piece of white paper or such up to your finished examples it would show up that much clearer. Thanks again

  • ok, you convinced me.... silver is just not worth the trouble.

  • HAHAHA. DAMN THATS KOOL.. I KNEW THERE COULD B FAKES OUT THERE..NICE VID.. N HOW DO U CLEAN IT.. WASH IT OFF WITH HOT WATER..? IN OTHER WORDS. HOW DOES IT DESTROY A COIN..?

  • Two things

#1 would have been nice to see what they looked like when you wiped the liquid off since you said it ruins the coins.

#2 If if ruins them, what other test is there to test a good quality coin? A high qaulity fake can be made as well so what do you do?

  • @Jockguy2008 I 2nd this comment

  • There are many easy ways how to do this if you understand chemistry.

  • So, Dont use this stuff on coins of value it will destroy the coins value.....so what good is it.

  • @RHINO6383 if you're buying it for the silver it doesn't matter.

  • hell the dam worthless Chinees they first steal our dam jobs with miniplating the dallor then they go and make coppies of out shit and then try to ripps us off I say lets send some spys over and kill the hole lot of them and blow up every dam factory they used to make facks at and kill them all.

  • what is your suggestion on a reliable online source to buy silver or gold coins/bullions?

  • 14 people bought fake silver

  • This test is fuckin useless!

  • i kinda want to start collecting fake coins now.

  • RE: silver and magnetism.

You can't use an ordinary fridge magnet. You need to buy a "rare earth magnetic". They are highly magnetic and can't be demagnetized. When you hold a silver bar at a 45 degree angle and let the magnet slide down the silver bar it will slide down slowly. If it's not silver and it's fake it will either be highly attracted to the bar and will stick to it in one place or it will slide off of it very quickly.

  • 1. Silver should "push" a magnet away. Do the fake ones push silver or show no activity to a magnet?

    2. Do the fake coins weigh the same as the real coins?

    Thanks!!

  • 18k gold acid works too if its real it will turn blue

  • Should a magnet be able to stick to .999 silver bullion?

  • @scorpionkings No. When you hold a magnet to silver, you should feel a push, not an attraction. Silver is diamagnetic. So silver will respond to a magnet, but there should be NO "sticking"

  • you mean somebody is faking old U.S. coins?, (MAN, what next)??

  • @JeffreyRodriguez good comment-thanks.

  • This guy sounds like Dan Akroyd......Couldn't stop thinking of ghostbusters the entire video! =)

    COOL VID THOUGH!

  • @TheGreekMan1981 Thanks man, some people say I sound like that guy Rick on Pawn Stars.

  • @Silveready1 Is there another way to tell if silver is real from knock-offs I'm only interested buying silver bars not coins btw.

  • @snuckles108 I would just buy from a reputable dealer like Apmex or Gainesville Coin or a dealer in your area that stands behind their products.

  • If you just buy them from well known dealers and you are good to go.

  • Also, FYI: the Silver Dollar fakes will often look bad, with a too thick rim (as in your example) and incomplete or weak edge rims. Further, usually the counterfeits weigh less (19-20 grams) vs 26.7 grams for the real. Or, if they do weigh OK a base metal will be substantially larger (thicker). Most of the phoneys are detected by weight and sight, and followed up with the acid test if necessary.

  • @KSASTAMPS unfortunately the counterfeiters have come a LONG way, watch my recent video on Chinese fakes nLzVgdFhjY8

  • FUCK,i am 10 but i am very interested in sience, and i wanted to do this by myself...

    DAMN THE FREAKING DESCRIPTION!!!!!!

Better do battery electric transfer experiment,maybe...

  • umm...aren't you like, deystroying the silver coins with an ACID test?

  • Thanks for the video! In addition to this test is there anything else one could look for? Do the fakes still have that "ring" sound of silver when dropped on a desk or a counter top? This is some scary info that they've actually resorted to making fake 90% junk silver coins!

  • Junk silver coins? They still have have material value you know. Some people stick their entire life savings in gold and silver coins. Especially now with the crisis going on, I wouldn't call a silver coin junk. Even if it does look too ugly to collect. :P

  • @NeonGen2000 I agree, Silver in ANY form is Precious, I used the Numismatic term "Junk" Silver to denote Silver with little to no Collector premium - But it is FAR from Junk!

  • in china fake coins own you.

  • Very nice video! can I check silver or gold jewelry with this chemical?

  • 9 coin crooks rated this vid

  • I am kinda new to this whole silver thing and am more interested in it as investment opportunity, however, I am a bit confused. If the point of testing the silver is to see if it is authentic, yet if it is authentic then the value of it being authentic is lost because you tested it. So why test it this way?

  • @Reu360 no man if you have a really pretty collector coin in mint condition, you would devalue by markin it up with acid test , the tested coins are only wrth silver content and are still worth that.

  • I ironicly got a gold ad before watching this video.

  • Interesting video thank you for sharing

  • @lookatwhatic Thanks for watching!

  • Do you sell the is

  • surely it ADDS to the collector value as it is essentially a proof of legitimacy stamp?

  • thanks for taking the time!

  • @MarkCox73 Thanks for watching!

  • I don't have that solution but I have a mini scale meant for weighing coins. Would that work?

  • I have a kit and put it in my safe, now the safe is rusted inside. Is there a better way to store them? I already have them in two zip-lock bags and that hasn't helped much.

  • lol@greenish brown!

  • Silveready what test would you perform if you have a potentially valuable coin whose authenticity is suspect?

  • @luckybestwash No test is going to be 100% positive, even if it's a rare coin -some copies are made of Silver. the best thing to do if you think you have a rare coin is to submit it to ANACS for authentication it's only about $10.00 with shipping and theres no club to join, or if you have a competent Coin dealer near you I recommend taking the Coin to Him/Her to check it out.

  • Putting acid on some sterling caused the acid to turn a whitish grayish slight blue color with just a tiny bit of red in some cases those pieces that did that were sterling or at least 900 silver it does not always go completely red, probably depends on what else is mixed into the metal, would recommend scratching piece on a stone first if that fails then put acid directly on the piece will not ruin the piece stain will come out with great effort using silver cleaner might take an hour.

  • I turn 18 in less than a month. Can I try it?

  • @link4265 NO ;)

  • "WARNING: if you are under 18 or unfamiliar at all with these testing methods, seek the help of a Professional -do not try this yourself."

Oooh...minors can't test their own coins..........

  • Is there any way to do a test without using acid? Like is there an electronic device or some kind of laser device or something that will do the job?

  • @moh2o unfortunately theres nothing that's "affordable" for the average person other than acid -they tested some Gold bars from Fort Knox last year by drilling a hole directly through the center of them -now That's an Invasive test!

  • @Silveready1 Gold bars at Fort Knox?? I don't believe it, I'd bet all my silver and gold that it was just for show, a setup. The Federal Reserve HAS no reserves, nor is it federal of course. That gold was stolen by the banksters long ago...

  • @moh2o You could always try measuring its density. If you work out its volume (either by measuring its diameter and thickness or measuring its displacement), then measure its mass. Divide the mass by volume and if its silver it should be about 10.5 g/cm3.

  • @moh2o you can tell by the sound of dropping it from about 2 inches. It is best to have something that you know is silver to compare the sound to.

  • @watchthemoviefitna test only if your suspicious and ONLY with junk silver (I usually test with a VERY small amount on the edge of the coin, but it doesnt show up very well in the video when I do it that way ;)

  • @Silveready1 What product is that?

  • right ! , it's better to use a scale and keep that old Morgan dollar in original condition, someone on ebay would have bid around $30 for it today !

  • @silverdollar3 I put the acid drop on the front for the video, the coin is pretty much scrap, it was cleaned with steel wool and has a big rim ding - normally I can just test the edge of the coin with a very small drop.

  • How much weight have the fake egles? they look almost real... :(

  • @doctorgore I forget exactly, but they were very close to the origimal.

  • nice vid, but if it devaluates the coin how can we test? :)

  • Golden, you can NOT tell the difference by dropping and listening for that silver "ring". I just got burned for 35 bucks on a fake morgan on ebay. It is one of the best counterfeit copies I have ever seen. Passes every test except the acid and weight (was only 24 grams). Seems our favorite auction site is now flooded with fake silver coins and nothing can be done about it. Maybe we should pay our national debt to the Chinese with these fake coins since they persist in allowing their manufacture.

  • I see blue....

  • You can tell the silver coins by just dropping them on a table the silver will ring and the clad one will go thunk.

  • You can usually tell just by looking at the coin and flipping it, unless it's a really good counterfeit, I guess.

  • looked about 40% brown

  • Green my ass that's a light blue like sky blue. The second one is of a teal color not brownish green. Come on man. Great video though I'll have to get me some of that stuff.

  • what we consider junk silver today might be a jewel for some young collector or even, as time goes on, become collectible in and of itself since there are only so many to go around. So why not just get an inexpensive scale and weight the pieces? One time of googling to find the weights, no rubber gloves, and no defacing the coins. Pus, once you buy the scale - you need not buy anything else. You would need buy more acid as time goes by if you decide to keep defacing coins.

  • @LeeBrewer42 I must agree, acid testing takes away value, that Morgan Dollar is not actually junk ! I see the rim has a nice bump at 7 or 8 o'clock but it's still a nice coin. I'm a collector since the 1960's, and the best test is with your eyes and a scale, uncirculated Morgans weigh 412.5 grains, or 26.73 grams. That 1883 $ is still over 26 grams. It's a shame to ruin them with acid !!

  • no, not if it's just a common bullion bar -it may leave a spot on the surface so you may just want to test the edge or an inconspicuous place, but the value is in the "Silver Content" not the bar itself.

  • @Silveready1 If i do this test on an american silver eagle coin will it devalue the coin? Also is there a coin company that you recommend buying gold and silver from?

  • @kingmu1 yes, it will hurt the numismatic value if there is any -one of my new favorite dealers is Liberty Coin in Del Mar ,ca. (google it) they are a small but growing dealership that has some really competitive prices and personal service, I like that they post all their buy/sell prices right on their Web site.

  • would this destroy the value of a silver bullion bar?

  • @xxBUSHIDOUxx

Probably not, as the bullion bar is only worth the value of its weight in silver. If a silver bar is new or old, it is still worth the same.

  • Was the weight accurate on the fakes??

  • can you wipe that stuff off

  • It would be nice if the Feds passed a law prohibiting the importation of of any fake coins but they do as long as they are stamped 'copy'. Coins sold in Europe do not require this. Ebay allows the sale of of fake coins. This is a real problem. Why we have trade with China at all is a mystery to me.

  • @robost very true, and NONE of these fakes are stamped "copy"!

  • @Silveready1 i have flatwear that is scrap and the sterling label is wore off you can barely see it they have lots of wear and they are bent i tryed to sell them for scrap yesterday and they wanted to pass on them how can i sell them and what metal are the fake coins?

  • @brian93ist if you have a lot of flatwear the sterng Hallmark should be visible on some of them, if you're sure they're sterling I would sell them to a local PM refiner or sell them on Ebay.

as far as the metal content on the fake -I have no Idea.

  • @brian93ist ill buy them

  • @robost

Why we have trade with China at all is a mystery to me. The reason is why, because we sold all of our equipment to them, so we can no longer make things, such as tv's, blenders, levi jean's, etc... We also want to be able to buy things for a dollar and in this country, nothing can be made for a dollar and still make a profit. The majority of corporations make almost everything now in China. Even the fish walmart sells comes from China...

Luckily, we still make cars here.

  • @robost .........why? either your a idiot or your just stupid...there is no damn mystery without China america will fail..americans owe money to china and I don't mean like JUST millions of dollars. More like trillions of dollars. Every thing is made from China..you say why..I say because we have the material MORE material to make the stuff. Why does america and china trade? Well...because China wants to broadcast there stuff, while america needs the amount and things to be made. mystery solved

  • @xY0uPwnx Hmm, an idiot or stupid, let me think about that and get back to you. I will wager that your first language is either not english or you did poorly in spelling and grammar in school.Okay, that aside, your bewilderment about my question is due to the fact that it was a 'rhetorical' question, look it up.I am well aware of the current trade/ trade imbalance and what is behind it, more so than yourself quite likely. The US in the past produce practically everything for itself in the past.

  • @robost I'm reading your comments right now, and it seems to me your searching how to spell these big words out...congratz...idc if you didn't . Anyways I think america is great but your topic here seems like your saying that America is #1 america this and that....NO..HELL NO...every states needs another to survive, either its U.S or Asia but the thing is, with asia being in the TOP of electronics, games, furniture, shipping, money, broadcast, delivers, toys, marketing,...

  • @robost The thing is I love being in america, and im not from china or born there...lol l don't speak their language or whatever. But the thing is in the end we all need to depend on them. I owe lots of respect to them and I'm learning their language, b/c L want to be able to work with them later on in my life. Theres really no reason for me typing this. But I just think theres no need to compare anything from fake or real...even if its cheap..

  • @robost BUT THEN, your saying why are there fakes....um..so your saying that China is cheap? HELL FKIN NO...they make fakes because if someone doesn't have the money to buy the real thing they can just buy the fake one.. lets say paintings..okay the mona lisa... So you tell me how your going to buy this damn thing? You can't; your to poor. So that's why they make fakes. Fakes meaning; someone can enjoy something thats been made; but not overpriced. and then again china is making money with fakes

  • @xY0uPwnx If you go on Ebay in the US, there are practically no bids on Chinese fake coins. Most authentic US coins are affordable in the lower grades. As with many fake products coming from China,it is more an issue of character/talent for making fakes and money in exchange for their products. As a friend says"Imitation is the highest form of unoriginality." By the way, study up on the proper useage of 'their' and 'there'.

  • @robost Either way, America still owes China lots of money. :)

  • @robost Wth, where does Ebay come in this.........Why would you but something that's less value and resale it.....wth you make no sense. I buy something from the dollar store and sell it on Ebay??No I would keep it. Why you keep talking about the coins, I don't give a damn about the coins, your still using stuff made in China. You can come talk to me when most of everything said's "Made in U.S.A.

  • @xY0uPwnx The fake coins are being sold directly from China. May I suggest, if you are not sure about something, ask for a clarification.

  • @robost ....of course their sold directly from China.....China is #1 in factories..and stuff...I don't know much..but I know for sure their country has LOTS AND LOTS of factories.. but fakes doesn't HAVE to mean their made from someone in China. It can mean someone from America said's that want this and that, but they need to ask China to make the molds and stuff to cast it out. OKAY OKAY...arghh..wat the heck..just....stop typing...about..this...it's getting boring...

  • Were the weights of the fakes correct? Can weight be used to spot them?

  • @svenp yes (unfortunately) the weights were very close.

  • Just bring a real coin or better yet a few real silver coins with you and you can tell by taking a close look and compare them and by the sound of them hitting each other, its only worth bringing the acid for a heavy silver objects other then coins if your not sure what it is but you need the stone to rub it on first 2 times then apply acid to the stone.

  • i didint know there was fakes out there ,very interesting

  • @onlythewise1 it's only getting worse unfortunately -thanks for watching!

  • @Silveready1 ya the whole world wants a piece of usa and there getting it

  • Why do you say to try it on only coins with no value. Why test in the first place then?

  • @dennis4679 we are testing 90% 'Junk Silver" coins for silver "Content" only.

  • Why destroy some of the coins with aqua regia?

  • @williamjpiano these are Junk Silver coins, we are testing for Silver Content ONLY.

  • The deeper the red the higher the purity, low content silver will go green.

  • Silver pushes against the magnet. You can feel it.

  • @disclosurenow9 but do similar alloys act the same way?

  • @disclosurenow9 So does copper bismuth diamond and lead

  • @disclosurenow9 Iron, nickel, colbalt, and alloys made from those metals react to magnets.

  • @Da1UHideFrom EXACTLY!

  • @Da1UHideFrom iron is magnetic -dont know about the others just use your common sense and experience, later.

  • @disclosurenow9 Nickel and colbalt are also magnetic,

  • You can get the solution online eh? How do we know the SOLUTION aint fake? Stick our finger in it?

  • @bigglyguy uh, no I wouldnt do that.

  • You can beat fakes with the old ping, weight and dimension test. They can fake the weight and they can fake the size but they can't yet do both due to the density of silver.

  • dirty chinks keep producing fake silver coins.

  • I was so pist off I Raped my silver 100 mills with a hammer and spike. It didn't took much strength to show the f*cking coper ><

  • Or just drop it and listen for the silver...lol

  • Silver Ready, I have some updated work i've done using magnets to test silver. Chk out my vid. Keep up the good fight against FAKE COINS!!!

  • @SILVERMAGNETSLIDE thanks, sorry for the delay in geting back to you -I'll check it out!

  • Thanks man. I love your page. Very interesting and teaching me some things. Please visit my silver and gold, page when you have time. Would love any comments.

  • @chamaflauge Thanks, subbed you back!

  • this would fail on a silver plated coin ^^

  • @trentable nope, works good on silver plate also -just takes a few seconds longer to turn green.

  • When you say magnet your not using a magnet from your fridge are you? You have to use a powerful Earth magnet.

Although you can use the weight or bring it to a dealer. You don't put the acid on the coin. You use a scratch plate.

Also Acid does go bad and when this test won't work.

Some fakes can be picked out with just a little knowledge. Scales can be gotten online for as little as $10.

  • @SicaGR no, ive used very powerful rare earth magnets and the results are not conclusive -90% silvercoins respond similarly to fakes.

  • isnt turquoise blue?

  • but when it is coated with genuine silver ?

The non-silver material under the silver layer will not react !

  • @edgar0001 it would have to be a VERY thick layer and most fakes have a very thin silver electroplate or no silver at all.

  • Comment removed

  • if this solution will ruin a valuable coin like you stated in your video, my point is then why use it if it wil ruin the value?? The magnet test has to be the better choice wouldn't you say?

  • @allison481959 as stated in the video, this is a quick test on "Junk Silver" only, these are bags of U.S. coins valued primarily for their Silver content ONLY. with the massive influx of Chinese fake silver coins, many of these fakes are turning up in "Junk Silver" bags...this is simply a quick and easy test you can perform on any suspicious coins, this test is NEVER to be performed on ANY coins with Numismatic (collector) Value, and the "magnet test" isnt conclusive at all -thanks for watching

  • Great!

  • @ATTICUSFINCH51 Buy graded coins from PCGS or NGC

  • if you're really experienced you can tell by the sound of it, of course not many people are that experienced so be careful

  • it should not be too hard to tell if something is silver on the outside. I think most people can do that, it's just that you cant really tell on the inside, but then you're buying OLD COINS, NOT NEW COINS, that means you dont know how to collect coins :\ i guess....i mean if it says .999 silver i dont think it can be faked or else that's a serious crime.

  • Can there be plated silver coins ?

  • @MaxZagar yes, but ive found the acid will eat through the thin plating pretty quickly and expose the metal below it.

  • @Silveready1

if it is going to eat through the plating that means it will eat into the regualr silver, that will destroy the numismatic value of the coin if not reduce its weight

  • Where do you purchase this solution?

  • when you get done using the acid on the coin and rinsed/wipe off the coin... was there some weird spots on the coin where you put the acid???

  • @TomSilverCat LOL -scary but true!

  • seems to me the acid test would only hurt collector value , not the basic or melt value of a .999 fine silver eagle.

  • Thank You for showing honest, hard working Americans how to protect themselves. You're on the right side of a winning trade. A marshall riding in with his posse wearing a white 10 gallon hat and a blinding white smile. You get my point.
