If you have the backtrack 3 iso on your usb then you have to specify the file location in the preferences in vmware. I would also use VMware server if you want to run multiple Operating systems like backtrack 3, xp, windows 7 in VM ware

Yeah if you have a live cd if you dont it would take your longer to make a iso cd then to just boot from the file location.

1. Yes, it's called a dual-boot. Google "dual boot backtrack"

2. With an install of BT you can make persistent changes and can save any customizations you may want to do with BT

3. BT is completely legal to use. But only on your own network or PC or anyone else as long as you have their permission. BT is intended to do penetration tests of networks to make them more secure, not to steal BW or peoples personal information.

I'm not the best with computers, but how did you get the clean BT3 icon on your desktop? I downloaded it to a CD, which consists of two folders (boot & BT3).

How would I run this through VMware? or which file should I download instead of the CD image?

thats not the bt3 icon it's just the icon of a burning program for iso formatted files like when you download .rar files, winrar shows its icons on them its the same for that proggy

sorry ill try to explain it better it's simple when u have files that end with .iso like the file u needed to download to get bt 3 it was bt3-final.iso and you have a program that burns files that end with .iso, that program puts his logo on the files that end with .iso to let you know you can burn them so actuly it wasnt the proper iconn of bactrack but just the icon of some program that burns .iso files on cd's if u still dont understand tell me and ill make a screenshot with some info on it

ye thats normal cus when you burn .iso the burning program extracts the files from the iso to the cd and thats y u dont see .iso files in the cd after burning and you have to reboot your pc and select the boot device to boot bt3 anyway it didnt work for me so i used virtual box (google it)

a real good alternative for backtrack 3 in windows is Cain and Abel, but the problem is you need a AirpCap ubs network adapter to get the wep cracked

well it slows down your computer when using vmware, plus vmware only supports usb wifi cards so if you want to use your internal wifi card you would need to use the cd.

Hi, I have a trouble. In my computer I have a wifi card Netgear WG311T. When I run VMware it can't detect my wifi card. It is supose that this card works with BackTrack 3, but I don't know how to do it.

make sure that vmware is recognising your wifi card.....if you see the blue usb icon in the bottom right corner of vmware and you click it and clikc connect it should be connected....if that doesnt work then make sure th wifi card works with teh live cd....if it doesnt work then either it isnt working or it isnt fully supported.

Thanks for respond Kivi12k. asking to "saint google" I found that Vmware doesn't support pci cards (only USB devices) for that rason it couldn't detect mi WG311T pci card. I did work BackTrack3 form the Live CD but I still feel that could be possible run BT3 inside of Windows with Vmware because it has the option of bridge the car. Do you belive the same?

there is no way to use vmware with anything besides a usb wifi card. What you are refering to is bridging the network. That will allow you to use the internet but it wont allow you to can wifi, meaning you cant use the airodump or aireplay commands because it doesnt detect any compatable wifi card.

hmmm....some wifi cards cant handle the airmon-ng stop ...etc and they wont work if you do that...so you would have to skip the macchanger commands and just start off with airodump-ng rausbo.

Thanks for the reply, I've done that but it still doesn't start up, it shows error message of some sort saying "is your video ram set to low" and doesn't work, I've tries loading it in different options but to no avail. Help, do you need graphics card or video card to run Backtrack3.
