I think you should reevalutate whether the teaching of the Eucharist is a pagan/Catholic invention.
"They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes." Ignatius of Antioch, 110 AD
I'm glad I saw this because I recently watched Religulous, and I felt that he was trying to press his ideas over with the people he interviewed, while laughing at "silly" ideas and he has none of his own. Anyway good video.
@otherether Who's interpretation of your comment is the correct interpretation? Or could it be that the writer has a specific intent that I would find by using the rules of language (linguistics). It is only a mystic ( someone who determines truth by feelings) that would ask such a question.
Now, I don't care for Morey very much ... at all. But I have to hand it to the guy, he did a great job at reviewing this "documentary." I thoroughly enjoyed watching him show Maher's ignorance.
And I'm not a Muslim, but I do know that Islam doesn't profess Muhammad to be God. The idiot who said this needs to be slapped with a Quran. If one is going to bash a religion, he should at least have a minimal understanding of what that religion actually teaches, or at least enough to be credible.
Dr. Morey, you completely miss the point. As most people who believe in mythological tales all too often do, you conveniently choose what serves your purpose to make your points, while ignoring the actual deeper points being made to the contrary. Your critique of Religulous, then, is simply self-serving and off the mark.
The discussion naturally turned into the question of creation, because it's such a perfect example of inconsistency between and old dogmatic belief and science.
Let's say you have figured something out I haven't - then enlighten me - Why is an old scripture of 6 day creation (with or without magical wand) more likely to be true than the conclusion of millions of biologist worldwide? Are they all wrong?
Okay, I read it more carefully. Here's some observations.
1.The initial discussion was the content of the film. YOU introduced a red herring by changing to young/old earth and evolution topic.
2. You assert and reassert science this and science that. This accomplishes nothing. Just saying so doesn't make it so. You are guilty of the very thing you were trying to finger biblicalthought for. I think he was attempting to steer you to see your own presuppositions you seem to be unaware of.
ahhh....so you just couldn't? From now and beyond you'd better stop making a virtue out of not thinking.
That's why evangelical Christianity dangerous. It makes people who don't have the answers believe that they have.
Rational christians see no contradiction between having a God initiating the Big Bang. The Bible is NOT God's words and can NOT be read word by word. Instead it should be read for it's inspirational value only.
See, God has revealed Himself to us. How do you know there isn't something going on that you aren't , obviously, in on, highfive2006, or you would know that.
This guy is ridiculous. His only point is moot. Bill Maher talked how people treat Jesus and Mohammad like a god. Not that the scripture says they are gods. People idolize them like gods. Just like the virgin Mary. Go to South America and tell me Mary isn't treated like a god. Total nonsense.
bill was mistaken on the communion in general terms, however, the movie was brilliant. He did his homework, and it was much more entertaining than Zeitgeist. This professor needs to pull that stick out of his ass, pour himself a stiff drink and call up a hooker.
3 # You're not reasoning at all and you don't present a single argumention! You just pretend you can threaten people as if they stand in a court. WHERE THE HECK IS THE COURT??? I DON'T SEE IT, NOR THE VERDICT?????
Dr Morey attemps to reject the entire message of the movie based on a mere selection of comments from Bill Maher, as if the movie is about Mohammad alone. If THAT is the best he can come up to defend the statement that "organized religion is more good than bad" it surely reflects your lack of reason and argumentation.
So, we are warranted in questioning YOUR critical thinking abilities. (Historically The church never allowed critical thinking so they could claim monopoly on "truth")
1. Your willingness to ignore such a fundamental error such as "Muslims believe Mohammad is God"not only warrants our suspicion of your reasoning abilities, but confirms the validity of our suspicion.
2. A la Bill Maher, you have followed in his fallacious footsteps by making the claim that, "Historically The church never allowed critical thinking..." Another fundamental error.
1. The discussion about whether Muslims believe Mohammad is God" is a dissertion and has absolutely nothing to do with the movie's message.
2. Even today the Church doesn't allow critical thinking. Just take the example of socalled "creative design". Which absolutely everyone with a college education knows is bullshit.
If you fundamentalists want to discuss the Movie then explain why examination of sources is nessecary with historic scriptures, but not with they Bible.
I happen to orient myself according to scientific research. We have proven the evolution, so that is the fact. In your world, truth is irrellevant. It's just a question of interpretating some 2000 years old biblical scriptures.
Explain to me why the world was "created" in 6 days. Explain why evolution is wrong when science can prove it.
Let me see if I understand you correctly. You're saying that you are willing to believe only that which is rational, and science is rational, while Christianity is not; therefore, you believe in science.
I really don't see the contradiction between science and rational christianity. Based on your previous comments I would easily suspect you of being a kind of Christian who believes everything written in the Bible is true.
My statement is that whenever science proves the Bible wrong -science wins. I don't oppose the existance of Jesus, but I do oppose the myth of 6 day creation. This madness is surprisingly is supported by a majority of evangelical Christians. Poor ignorant, uneducated crowd!
If I am going to interact with your view, I must understand what you mean by rationality, what you mean by science, and why you think that science is rational.
Also, what do you mean when you use the word "myth?"
You didn't respond to my statement regarding science and Bible. What's your point of view and why?
Everything proven by scientific research is rational. Everything that isn't -is based on assumption, which is irrational. Has it ever occurred to you that "believe" is just a cute way of saying "assume". Religious people don't know shit, you just assume.
When you say that you believe in scientific research, do you mean that you use the scientific method yourself to discover all that you think you know about reality? Or, do you believe what scientists tell you that they have discovered by the scientific method? In that case, are you really believing in science, or in the testimony of scientists?
Also, if, as you've stated, "Everything proven by scientific research is rational... [and] Everything that isn't -is based on assumption, which is irrational," then unless you can prove the validity of this statement by the scientific method alone without any assumptions, it is only an assumption and therefore irrational - according to your own rules.
Surely you are more rational than that. Has this statement been proven by science alone void of any assumptions whatsoever?
Science is rational. You can not get away from that with bullshitting.
Science proves mankind is a result of evolution. Explain to me why science is wrong about evolution. Who's lying? Evangelical christians or the scientists?
I like how you put Evangelical Christians on the verse against Scientists instead of Creationists.
I haven't learned too much of evolution at the moment, but nothing really seems to define what started evolution. Some say it was bubbles crashing into each other or something like that, but I just don't get how that would work like that.
And even then, remember there are theistic evolutionists.
As for the video, since Religulous is a satire, I couldn't care less about it.
Let me make myself clear about one thing. First, I believe evolution was initated by a supreme being (God). This discussion isn't about God's existance, but about the truth about our existance. Either we are a result of a billion year lasting and still ongoing process of biological development known as evolution.
Or...there are some narrow minded people who literally read the bible and believe there has been some kind of a "magic wand" constructing everything we know in just 6 days...DECIDE!
I am not asking these questions just for the sake of asking them, nor am I trying to distract you with irrelevant questions, but you claimed to be rational, and now you must back up your claim with a rational defense of your beliefs. But I am not done yet. I suppose you would agree that rationality has to do with logic and valid reasoning, and by saying that Christianity is irrational, you also mean that Christianity is illogical and that it involves invalid reasoning. Is this accurate?
Don't bullshit me. You can't escape the discussion by attempting to distort it into a new discussion about what's rational and what's not.
Let me see if you have any substance. I explained my point of view, you haven't done that yet. Explain why it makes more sense to you that God created Earth with "the magic wand" in 6 days rather than evolving it just they way scientific research teaches us. DO IT!
One thing has been established so far. That is, that you, highfive2006, are not able to answer the most basic fundamental questions about knowledge and reality. Yet you are attempting to explain both knowledge and reality.
I submit to you, and all else that think this way, that you have no right to criticize religious people for their "faith-based" assumptions when all you have are "faith-based" assumptions of your own. You have accepted the testimony of others BLINDLY! (blind faith)
My dear, the difference between a religious testimony and a scientific report is that the scientific can be investigated by others at anytime. Through the requirement for vality in scientific method, you will have the same results. A testimony is just anyone's subjective point of view and has nothing to do with truth.
highfive2006 said: "A testimony is just anyone's subjective point of view and has nothing to do with truth."
Thank you for that testimony!
Until you can prove the truth of this statement according to the scientific method alone, it remains as just another subjective point of view floating out there in the abyss of the unrelated...
Yawn.
P.S. Where can I find the scientific report on "religious testimonies?"
I told you, you can't even answer the most basic questions about what you believe.
The reason why even you use the term belief is that we're talking about something supernatural. Confidence in a science is different, because it can be proven. Obviously you don't even know what a scientific method is....nor do you know much about sciences. Instead you live in a dogmatic reality. Just like little kids told by their parents to believe in Santa Claus you believe in 6 day creation just someone told you to. One day little kids become old enough to ask for proof of Santa's existance
So is your "testimony" that "a testimony is just anyone's subjective point of view and has nothing to do with truth" true? Or is it subjective and has nothing to do with truth? A person can give eyewitness testimony in court and send a person to jail for life. Are you thinking clearly here? Men gave their life for the testimony that Jesus rose bodily from the grave. Who the heck would sacrifice his life for a KNOWN lie--not to mention all 12? I think not. Their testimony stands as truth.
So do UFOs exist just because Jimmy Carter and Dennis Kuchinic gave testimonies of having seen them?
This is very simple... I refer to my comment above, which not none of you can disproof. The world as we know it has evolved for more than 13 billion years. NOT 6 days, you retards
I never said they are the same. You stated a "testimony" is subjective and can't be trusted. If this is true why should I believe YOUR testimony this is true? How do people get convicted of murder if a testimony can NEVER be believed? I've been in court. I've never seen the lab coats in there working away. There are ways (other than scientic method) to determine truth. Point me to the "report" where your lab coats where present to observe our origins. I would like to see how they TEST this.
LOL you evangelicals get soooo pissed off when you lose debates. Allow me to help and redirect you back on track, because my discussion thread with biblicalthought is about 6 days creation-as-written-in-the-bible vs 13 billion years evolution. Biblicalthought failed, because science has proven the Bible to be wrong about the timeline.
Unless you think I'm an atheist (I'm a Christian, but I'm not evangelical and I figured out Bible is too full of imperfections to be trusted word by word)
3. So you therefore "won the debate" That's humorous. I would more aptly describe it as an "encounter" where you, the little pebble, brushed up against a boulder. I don't know who biblical thought is, but he clearly out classes you. That much is sure.
4. The likelyhood of you being a "Christian" is remote.
5. I still maintain that science can't prove origins regardless of position. You would have to be present to observe its beginning.
6. Lastly, you appear to be a bit of a potty mouth.
"Explain why it makes more sense to you that God created Earth with "the magic wand" in 6 days rather than evolving it just they way scientific research teaches us. DO IT!"
I would love to take up this fascinating subject. But first, explain to me what you mean by "sense." And what do you mean when you use the word "God?"
"I would love to take up this fascinating subject. But first, explain to me what you mean by "sense." And what do you mean when you use the word "God?"
Ever heard of the era of enlightenment? That's when people started asking questions and investigated the world instead of blindly and uncritical accepting the words of the church. Anyone who belives in socalled "intelligent design" simply lacks critical thinking ability!
If you claim to be rational, then I ask that you *really* be rational. That is, I ask that you reason in a valid manner, following the strict laws of logic. Do you have a problem with that?
3. Furthermore, before charging you with a formal fallacy, please explain how "my"alleged lack of reason and argumentation is logically deduced from "Morey's" best defense of the statement about organized religion. I'll give you a chance to avoid being publicly charged guilty of a category fallacy by offering you an opportunity to explain your argument.
4. Please explain to me what you mean by the words: "reason," "argumentation," and "religion."
Solid interview! These "youtube" scholars need to realize their elementary comebacks are not going to thwart the foundational truth of Christianity...Repent and submit yourself to the Lordship Jesus Christ.
Excellent excerpt of the review. Maher's and Charles' incompetency is put on display for all to see in such ridiculous statements like the ones Dr. Morey discusses.
The intellectual bankruptcy of atheism strikes again.
he absolutly and obviously did not get the messege of bill maher or his film - which isn't supposed to be a documentary by the way.
the only ignorant and arrogant wanna be is this dr. moran.
i mean helllloooo!!! who cares about who believed in what or who was believed to be a god, what symbolic meaning the wine and bread had or have, or what ever?!
the only message is simply: all and every religion are nothing than nonsence!!!
why didn't Mr. Bill Mayher interview a single RESPECTED Christian Scholar??? Dr. William Lane Craig anyone? how about Dr. Ravi Zacharias... even a Matt Slick would have done fine...
"Everything Dr Morey says is irrelevant to the movie."
Your comment is irrelevant to the video. Since you've failed to recognize that the entire discussion in the video clip is based upon the fatally flawed statements made by Maher and Charles *in the movie,* we are warranted in questioning your intellectual abilities.
the joke is on you Dr. Morey, your review is bias. your part of the problem. All religions wether they are biblical or not ARE MYTHS. How come you didn't talk about wether or not god exists? wasn't the movie about that?
do you believe jesus rose up to heaven, and that god created the world in seven days? that if you are a good muslim you will get virgins when you go to heaven? do you think there is a heaven or a hell? and do you believe that god is watching us and is listening to us?
No. Its more like we made god in our image and made up a whole bunch of myths.
And that's ok, for people a thousand or two thousand years ago to believe. But now is a different time, science should be what we follow.
Look, no one knows where we came from and why we are here, but that's alright. What's not alright is for people to make up religions that claim they know; that propagate hate and war (crusades, terrorism, etc.) and that sends people across the world occurring wonderful civilizations in order to make them believers in god (because god told them to do it). That is why Bill Mahr did that movie, to stop this foolishness. And thats why this clown (Dr. Morey) is part of the problem.
1. I'm not Muslim,i am a Christian. 2.Science points toward God Lee Strobel a former skeptic made a Movie called "a case for a Creator" that shows the work of a creator and Ben Stein made a movie called "Expelled" which shows how scientists at these top schools find nothing more in their evolution or Darwin theorys and question if a Creator Created everything and then they lose their jobs and cant find any work and their career is over its a great movie please watch it..
made up religion? ok im not arguing their are no made up religions but Christianity(the kind that teaches from the word of God)is not..the bible was not changed of time unlike other books,it has no contradictions, and God preserved it.
sir i ask you just to look at both sides not just what they teach you at school.
cuz they only teach from the evolution side.
please dont be ignorant you seem like a smart person..
if u would like to talk on aim sometime i could give you my sn lmk..
bill is against all religion. what the fuck was the lame spiel about being against organized religion. then comparing it to medicine etc. what a complete douche.
I love watching this video.

Ok...go for it...prove that science can be proven.

Shiloh2rtn 3 years ago
A scientific report is NOT a testimony.
So do UFOs exist just because Jimmy Carter and Dennis Kuchinic gave testimonies of having seen them?
This is very simple... I refer to my comment above, which not none of you can disproof. The world as we know it has evolved for more than 13 billion years. NOT 6 days, you retards
highfive2006 3 years ago

Unless you think I'm an atheist (I'm a Christian, but I'm not evangelical and I figured out Bible is too full of imperfections to be trusted word by word)
highfive2006 3 years ago

No

So by admitting that you recon testimonials ARE in fact 100 % subjective and can go any direction regardless of truth

Ever heard of the era of enlightenment? That's when people started asking questions and investigated the world instead of blindly and uncritical accepting the words of the church. Anyone who belives in socalled "intelligent design" simply lacks critical thinking ability!
highfive2006 3 years ago
What makes more sense, a magician on stage using a magic wand and making something appear?
or
The stage is empty and something appears on its own?
LOL!

If you claim to be rational, then I ask that you *really* be rational. That is, I ask that you reason in a valid manner, following the strict laws of logic. Do you have a problem with that?

I see where you are coming from. However, I will refrain from believing in something before I have learned of it.

that is the funniest thing I've ever read....

Now that's funny

To all supposed atheists, please answer #4.

Ignorance...

what is this dr. creepy talking about???
he absolutly and obviously did not get the messege of bill maher or his film - which isn't supposed to be a documentary by the way.
the only ignorant and arrogant wanna be is this dr. moran.
i mean helllloooo!!! who cares about who believed in what or who was believed to be a god, what symbolic meaning the wine and bread had or have, or what ever?!

Everything Dr Morey says is irrelevant to the movie. He doesn't respond to any of the criticism on religion.

Your comment is irrelevant to the video. Since you've failed to recognize that the entire discussion in the video clip is based upon the fatally flawed statements made by Maher and Charles *in the movie,* we are warranted in questioning your intellectual abilities.
biblicalthought 3 years ago
the joke is on you Dr. Morey, your review is bias. your part of the problem. All religions wether they are biblical or not ARE MYTHS. How come you didn't talk about wether or not god exists? wasn't the movie about that?
ciprianciprian 3 years ago
myths? how are they myths?
markservesgod 3 years ago
do you believe jesus rose up to heaven, and that god created the world in seven days? that if you are a good muslim you will get virgins when you go to heaven? do you think there is a heaven or a hell? and do you believe that god is watching us and is listening to us?
No. Its more like we made god in our image and made up a whole bunch of myths.
And that's ok, for people a thousand or two thousand years ago to believe. But now is a different time, science should be what we follow.
ciprianciprian 3 years ago
Look, no one knows where we came from and why we are here, but that's alright. What's not alright is for people to make up religions that claim they know; that propagate hate and war (crusades, terrorism, etc.) and that sends people across the world occurring wonderful civilizations in order to make them believers in god (because god told them to do it). That is why Bill Mahr did that movie, to stop this foolishness. And thats why this clown (Dr. Morey) is part of the problem.
ciprianciprian 3 years ago
1. I'm not Muslim,i am a Christian. 2.Science points toward God Lee Strobel a former skeptic made a Movie called "a case for a Creator" that shows the work of a creator and Ben Stein made a movie called "Expelled" which shows how scientists at these top schools find nothing more in their evolution or Darwin theorys and question if a Creator Created everything and then they lose their jobs and cant find any work and their career is over its a great movie please watch it..
markservesgod 3 years ago
made up religion? ok im not arguing their are no made up religions but Christianity(the kind that teaches from the word of God)is not..the bible was not changed of time unlike other books,it has no contradictions, and God preserved it.
sir i ask you just to look at both sides not just what they teach you at school.
cuz they only teach from the evolution side.
please dont be ignorant you seem like a smart person..
if u would like to talk on aim sometime i could give you my sn lmk..

ciprianciprian,
You said, "Look, no one knows where we came from and why we are here..."
How do you know this? Can this be logically deduced from a fact about reality that has been arrived at using the scientific method?
"science should be what we follow."
Why? Has science led you to this conclusion? If so, how?

What an idiot! Only in religion is 'organized' bad?
* Organized Crime (most think this is bad)
* Organized Healthcare = HMOs (some think this is bad)
* Organized Business (as in a consortiums, has been very bad for some industries)
He should think about his arguments before he makes them.
Also, mocking and ridicule is the dumbest form of criticism.
This guy also produces almost every form of logical fallacy as well.

bill is against all religion. what the fuck was the lame spiel about being against organized religion. then comparing it to medicine etc. what a complete douche.
