  • Outer Banks English sounds a lot like Cornish/British English. watch?v=jW23Zd4X_DI

  • all these people sound like hillbillies to me, not British at all

  • that old guy playing the guitar's name is mr Roy Parsons. i spent a large chunk of my childhood on ocracoke island. Mr Roy taught me so much about life when i was little. unfortunately mr roy passed away but his memory lives on

  • This soo sounds like my Uncle Jimmy..he lives down in Dare County.....Hes deff got the accent....

  • Hoi Toide on the sound soide!! I love it got a bunch of family that talk like that and its epic. Gotta love the diversity of my NC!!!!

  • Bloody hell they do sound British.

  • My mom's family is HOI TOIDERS...this is what my nanny sounded like...younguns I been momicked....

  • They talk alot more like they''re from Philadelphia or Baltimore than the south.

  • Carolina accents sound more British than any American accent.

  • Would someone from the Carolina Outer Banks pronounce the word mouse in a way that it rhymed with mace? Actually, the person I met pronounced the word house like hase. I used the mouse/mace example b/c hase isn't a word. I met a nurse while in the hospital one time & she pronounced house like "hase." Does that sound familiar to anyone? I heard another patient ask her if she was from coastal Virginia. I think she said yes. I'd appreciate any answers from anyone. It's very interesting.

  • @drewper73 Yeah, this is pretty common. House is, like you say, "hase" and mouse, "mase". The accent is all over the outer banks and up into Virginia. I grew up in the towns shown in this video but don't live there anymore. I miss it so much.

  • Does this dialect remind anyone else of the dialects spoken in the West Countries of England? I'm NOT sayin they sound the same - they don't at all - but they sound quite alike each other in certain respects. Compare the "hoi-toid on the sangy-soid" pronunciation to... say... pronunciations of similar words by the people of Sanford in the movie Hot Fuzz. Definitely a likeness there.

    Historical lineage, perhaps?

  • Sounds a bit like a Norfolk accent - south east. East Anglia with a Wiltshire twang.

    Listen to a Norfolk accent:

Allan Smethurst - Hev Yew Gotta Loight Boy?

  • OMG that must be one of the oldest accents in North America!! They actually sound like they are from Norfolk, England!

  • @hywel3 its a very old accent

  • im from downeast and i got a accent and i love it

  • Try to translate dingbatters haha

  • @Sparky5459 lol its funny that almost everyone i know uses the word dingbatter, but few people can give you a specific definition... i would say its like..... a goofy person? Like if somone does somthing stupid or silly you could call them a dingbatter.

  • @Shadowsilas we also call tourists that

  • @Shadowsilas well you are wrong! a dingbatter is someone who moves downeast from another area... and we don't like dingbatters!

  • @dwnestgrl23 Dingbatter is slang, meaning it doesnt have a set definition, it may be used one way more then others but it has multiple uses. Are you sure yall dont like people not from there? down easterners are just so warm and inviting... (sarcasm lol)

  • I don't really think the accent is that obscure. The southern drawl is still there; with a pinch of English and/or Irish depending the speaker.

  • There's no state like my state, NORTH CAROLINA!

  • @3sheetz2thawind Hell yeah

  • I think it's an awesome accent

  • needs subtitles. very fascinating

  • Instead of a brogue, has anyone heard it called the "sound round"? Only it sounds like "soned roned." That's what my mom's family called it. They are from around Cape Carteret.

  • @bookhound63 Down in Jacksonville, we've always called it the "hoi toider" accent

  • @ryouba My mom was from Cape Carteret. That man at 1:00 sounds just like my uncle.

  • Harker's Island or bust baby!

  • I love the guy with the Armor All hat. Totally good sound.

  • liza jean, I'm with you also. Great video. Love the sound.

  • One of the coolest things about NC is its linguistic diversity. Any native Tar Heel can peg a mountain, piedmont or coastal accent right away.

The OBX accent is one of the coolest though. Hearing them speak is like listening to Virginia Dare.

  • I want to adopt the older guy at the end.

  • I can see the Cornish, Devon, Dorset and Somerset influences in this accent. Definitely.

  • further north u go the less the accent on the outer banks. i liv in manteo. still got it, just not as much. great video. love to watch vids of my heritage and my dialect.

  • They say 'toime' like the Maritimers in Canada.

  • Roit! From NS.

  • I noticed that to, ironically when watching a movie set in coastal Canada, I recognized the accent as that of my coastal NC grandparents. Its weird, makes me think they came from the same place. Small world.

  • @bookhound63 The same types of people settled coastal Canada — English and Irish fishermen who were isolated for centuries after their early colonial settlement of fishing communities. I'm from eastern NC btw.

  • @lizajeans That is interesting to know. I haven't been able to find out much about my Irish ancestors. They had a very common Irish name. And sadly, their history died with them.

  • @bookhound63 Yeah, search for Newfie accent on YouTube, that's an accent from Newfoundland, Canada.

  • Reminds me of Tangier, Virginia.

  • CHICKEN CHOKING CHINA TOWNERS

  • Christmas 1963 I was in a bus station in L.A., California and heard a guy trying to explain that he was in the military, missed his change of buses and ended up there instead of Harkers Island, N.C. The gal at the ticket window could not understand his brogue. Being from Newport, N.C. I went over and translated for him so that he could get headed back to God's country. If ya ever get chance to assist a down east'er, do it cause they are some of the finest folks around. Buddy Norris

  • It's so pretty there. I love the Outer Banks!

  • "if you're born in japanese then you talk japanese" lol.
