As a Marketing student about to enter the Marketing field I feel pretty torn on this subject. On one hand I do actually enjoy having ads targeted to me because then I don't have to go looking for products they just find me. I am, however, concerned with the fact that most, if not all, American companies tend to follow the automatic opt-in rather then having the consumer choose to opt in.
Hi ForaTV. Thank you for this very informative video. Indeed, we all need to be more aware about what behavioral targeting is and what its implications are with regards to privacy and other considerations. This reminds me of an article aptly called 'What is behavioral targeting?' in this link: behavioraltargeting(dot)biz. But what do you think is the most feasible solution to this full disclosure issue?

For some reason conspiracy nuts think the government is the ultimate big brother. Corporations control government in a very real way and with this knowledge they could exert very real control over the public.
They know where we are all the time just about, let's be honest.....they can do pretty much whatever they want now....government is one of the most dangerous things humanity can experience....worse than hurricanes, worse than floods, worse than starvation alone, it is a deadly mixture of inefficiencies and special interest groups that are hell bent on collecting "their" money from the government or some form of corporate protectionism....it's all true, and sad....
@mikeshanklin it is private corporations which track people here.
Government is the body which regulates such practice.
It is precisely what people like Ron Paul say corps should be able to do without even putting up a question. stopping such things is called regulation.
force corps to put up warnings.
It is not a corp 'right' to hack us.
That is why nasty corps hate Govt.
consider you are being used by far right and the nastiest corps, they lie mike.
Don't kid yourself. Of all the data tracking efforts, the NSA have got to be somewhere near the top. But this is not a matter of government tracking versus corporate tracking; both are owned by the same group of elites. Regulation is a joke since it always gets shaped by those with a conflict of interest. If you want good government, focus on local government. If you want good businesses, look for those close to home.
Then the question is; how much openness is there? what is the scope of investigations? etc.
These are all issues of Government, whatever you call it, legislating to limit corporations, agencies, and other bodies is what Government does.
It is the mediator between groups in society, the legislator of policy decided by you all. Only a nutty minority want to see more corp hype & blind economics. it crashes.
Regulate it sanely. nudge it into recovery & sustainability.
The fact of the matter is most people either don't give a shit about good government or choose to remain wilfully ignorant. Corruption is ever growing, Oversight is an illusion, Regulation over the internet is virtually nonexistent, and so is this concept we call online privacy. I get an insane amount of porno ads before I can even connect to a secure network, I mean how crazy is that like I barely even watch erotic movies!
Maybe the best defense available right now is for all of us to go on Facebook and everywhere else and be as weird as possible, just to screw up all the behavioral targeting software.
Ideally, of course, a better defense would be requiring all companies that collect such data to fully disclose what they are doing, to delete inaccurate or misleading data, and to put other protections in place.
Can't imagine what my profile might look like from my FaceBook exposure. I can't think of a theme that suggests... but stuff keeps popping up in the margins for which I have no earthly use... regardless.
Between Google Maps on my mobile phone, Gmail, Google AdSense, Google search & YouTube, Google knows everything about me - who I know, the places I go, my politics, what I do & when I do it, what I'm apt to do.
It's a good thing I'm not on the lam because, between the cameras on the traffic lights & Google, I'd be screwed.
They covered a small part of the problem. It is very difficult to find privacy on the web. Check out your favorite websites privacy policy. Look for sections marked "How we use your information" and you might be shocked. What you do today can haunt you tomrrow. It's not just credit checks that employers run anymore. They will put your name into google and they can find out all kinds of things about you. Be careful!
Yeah, it's best to stay anonymous wherever possible. I still regret posting on newsgroups with my real name. Newsgroups stay, while most websites and articles eventually vanish.
However i suspect you're only gonna get into trouble with semi modern employers. The conservative ones won't care to google you, the very new ones won't care about that odd private life of yours, so long you're good at what they hire you for.
Cool!

This reminds me of a quote by the character of O'Brien in the novel 1984
"Power is tearing human minds apart and putting them back together in new shapes of your own choosing. "
If people in power know the patterns of what and how we (as individuals and as a populous) think at all times
...and we don't know THEIR patterns.
They can EASILY exert a control over us (as individuals and a populous) on a scale and scope that the world has never before known

they say they can tell everything about you with just two photos,
not only that you post everything.
