Being creative and using humor is a part of great performance practice. It certainly is not out of place here! This is a terrific video Thalia and your playing will help you rise above strong competition. It is cut to the chase and you have my vote.
Well, lets see how it ends up...creativity and vitality is good, its just a bit sad that there was not so many Contra players with musicality, perfection and ability to choose from..
Yes, I'm certain that there are a lot of players out there kicking themselves that they didn't dare try out because one of us (maybe both! :-)) will get a free 5 day trip to NY and possibly meet Steve Braunstein, a fantastic contra player from the SF Symphony. Taking risks and having fun while doing it pays off!
As you know, it is technically impossible to play the contrabassoon like the violin. Only 1/5 of the voting criteria is for musicianship so I decided to go for the "creativity" and "vitality" points...and have fun!! One has to have a sense of humor if one is going to play contra...and get the most out of life!
This might be the most precious video I've ever watched on YouTube. Your technical playing is very good, but that shot of your running away in the woods is maybe the most creative/funny thing I've ever seen. I wish two things for you:
1. That you get in to the YouTube Symphony.
2. That this video becomes the next internet sensation with millions of viewers.
Your repunzel gown distracts your music ability. Don't get me wrong nice video I hope you get in but the dress???? It's about musicianship not anything else.... I'd be a tad bit embarrassed but I gotta give it to you!
I considered wearing my Cat Woman outfit but the tail often gets caught in my contra... and I thought that if I wore cat ears no-one would take me seriously!
I was a bit curious about the dress, which has a label in the bodice "Delman Die Fledermaus '75". Googled it and got the English soprano Jacqueline Delman who now works as a vocal coach in the Stockholm area. She has apparently also sung "Die Fledermaus" in Las Vegas.
Well, it definitely seems like a costume piece right out of a Strauss operetta! Spanning the top of the vocal range to the lowest notes in the orchestra, I can only guess as to what other secrets remain untold ... BEST wishes!
Yes, it was difficult to watch the conductor while playing the contrabassoon. It would have been easier if one could have downloaded the video but I suppose that's not what YouTube is all about. Probably would have been best to just use the visuals but I decided to use both because it was too difficult to look at my music with the tempo changes and the conductor. Of course, listening was difficult too because it wasn't always perfectly in time with the visuals. Good luck!
If I could figure out how to video myself while watching the conductor video I might have submitted an entry, but I am technologically challenged. I also don't know if one would have to transport a contra to NY to participate or if one would be provided (I always play on instruments provided by the ensembles I play with). I'm rehearsing the Beethoven 5th part now, the tempo is fast and the arpeggios are a bear! Congratulations on your audition, I hope you win!
