What I don't understand is why we have to have such hateful arguments comparing opera singers. I bet if they were all alive there would be a great deal of mutual respect. Why can't we have that same respect. It's art, it is emotional and subjective maybe just enjoy what you like and let others do the same.
Think what the singers would say if the people who want to argue about who was better did it front of them. It would be really nice to see some honest attempt at courteous objectivity.

Here is a wonderful example of how Opera has at last evoluted and given us artists like Netrebko who is a real reformer and vsionary.I am not refering to extrreme or daring appearances,but her general approach to opera and singing.Sensational,not shouty,not boring,paying attention to ARTISTIC FEELING AND NOT TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT.To me,she achieves the REAL GOAL OF ART,which is global conception of a piece.She conveys the spirit of many arias much better than Callas and Tebaldi.

Don't compare the singing just the orchestra, this version has lousy sound. I wouldn't judge anyone on this. Why not look for a better one and then comment on her singing. First of all, this is the most successful aria for Dramatic soprano, and yes she is singing the high note, but when a Dramatic soprano sings that it's like an explosion.
So the tip is that this aria is not for Lyric voices like hers 'cuz it doesn't sound as it should.
I have to say I have yet to hear her live... but no recording I have heard of hers make me WANT to hear her live :-( simply does not appeal to my ears. She obviously has appeal as many love her... I wish her a long and successful career.
Is it me or does this Aria sound like it was written by Puccini? I'm not familiar with Catalani but I know this is really the only thing he's known for. Is his other work not as good as this?

If this is your favorite then you have never heard Ranata Tebaldi sing it she does it great justice. Its a wonderful aria. I'm a little biased towards tebaldi, make that a lot biased.

This is beautiful. There is no denying Callas, Tibali, Caballe. But it is wonderful to have Netrebko, Garanca, Ghiorgiu (sorry for the spelling) and this new group of talent. The have reenergized some people's interest in opera and are connecting with young folks just so the art doesn't die! That is a good thing!
