Cool, check out Thomas Campbell's book "My Big TOE"/Theory of Everything where he goes into the physics to, at least, in my mind, prove that reality is in fact completely virtual and that from all appearances we are living inside a computer program producing the virtual universe we live in.
I know what he's talking about here. All of those possible worlds, also dreams, premonitions, deja vu, they happen in the 5th dimension. He called it a computer though. It's not a computer, but it IS intelligence of a nonlocal nature. We humans think of a computer (programed by Someone) because it's what we're familiar with. The Universe is way craftier than that.
The only escape from this alternative reality, and timelines mind-maze is self-clearing work towards a realization of oneself as the Creator. A state of cleared out mind-matter. I currently use Sedona Method to achieve this and am having a lot of fun clearing out the old programs, deleting them from the Matrix. Yes, even The Architect, even Mr. Smith, and even Neo.
Very interesting viewpoint. Many sci-fi writers seem to tap into other dimensions of reality that offer truth to the reader. Many have been called prophets, fwiw. Arthur C Clarke comes to mind, and of course George Orwell.
Nietzsche called it "Eternal Recurrence". The limited possibilities of a closed Universe would mean that exact same things would necessarily repeat infinite numbers of times, and, as you came to appreciate the abysmalness of -and in- every lived, eternally-deep moment, you would either come to love it or hate it, and this choice would determine how you tasted such a Fate.
Dick's calling it "programming" is simply a picayune metaphorical limitation. Crackpots used to say "radio waves".
@voidforpurpose, your explanation of "Eternal Recurrence" is not what Nietzsche was saying. ER is a critique on the hubris of epistemological certainty (i.e., Knowledge is not static or fixed). Nietzsche was saying that when X occurs, X defines us. Yet, the moment we know more about X, X recurs as X-prime; which, in turn, defines us anew. And yet, again, once we know more about X-prime, X-prime recurs as X-double prime; which in turns, redefines us again; etc., etc., ad nauseam.
I'm suprised there wasn't any lawsuits stemming from THE MATRIX's theft of PKD's "VALIS" works. The parallels are too numerous. Computer holographic simulations, deja vu being the "glitch in the Matrix" and Trinity is obviously the dark-haired girl of whom PKD speaks archetypally. The film should have been prefaced with, "This work of fiction was inspired by the writings of Philip K Dick". (THE TRUMAN SHOW as well.)
honestly though, PKD's speech may sound very strange....but the predominant theory among physicists today is the Multiverse...in which exists infinite numbers of both yous and me (but would they actually BE you and me, even if we have identical atomic structure?). Every imaginable scenario, including the unimaginable also exists SOMEWHERE within one of these multiverses.
PKD may have been a bit insane, but the nature of reality and consciousness is very fascinating to me.
We would have the overwhelming impression that we were reliving the present, deja-vu, perhaps in precisely the same way, hearing the same words, saying the same words.

I think Dick means it more in a Terence McKenna way, you know the whole our minds have the same format as computers, take in this, filter that, lose this, remember that, use ram for this, (same goes for reality) that kinda shit. @RealityBirth Personally I think he meant a literal sense, but only if you imagine what technology the term "computer program" could refer to a million or more years from now. Our language and conceptual framework couldn't describe that kind of complexity, so we have to make do with the closest equivalent we have. If the very fabric of what we perceive as "reality" was at some level a designed simulation, then the distinction of literal and metaphorical becomes questionable.

I think the world could be some kind of computer program but millions even billions of years more advanced than that of our technology. In the documentary, his gf at the time said that this was a horrible speech... they also liked to allude to the possiblity that he was insane. The more time that goes by, you just got to wonder, was this guy the real deal visionary, way ahead of his time? Because listening to his speech now, it makes perfect sense, given what we know about multidimensions, computers, etc.
When I was a kid I had the sensation while sitting under a tree on the way home from school of being switched from the universe I belonged in into this one. So discovering PKD's work years later, needless to say, had a profound impact on me.
@travisnealtodd70 This happened to me multiple times as a child. Every morning I could sense that this was somehow a different universe I had woken up into. I didn't know how many times I was going to switch universes (parallel dimensions). Perhaps it was just a felt sense of reality changing (as everything is always changing).

read VALIS and you will see that everything Matrix was not revolutionary at all. The core of Matrix idea was already discussed by Sci-Fi writes such as K. Dick.
read Erewhon, by samuel butler, it was wrote in the late 1800s... it has a section called "the book of the machines" it's mindblowing what he predicted to happen. he knew about the technology that we would have today and even speaks of the dangers it can cause in our own future now. it's pretty damn far out for him to come up with this in the late 1800s
...and shortly after this, he wrote A Scanner Darkly.
and long after that The Matrix came out and was a huge success in "the mainstream", opening countless thousands of minds to the reality of our shared illusion world.

Most likely PKD was having visions of parallel universes. I too have had visions of alternate universes, some of which there are wars between humans and what I would call "silicon life". I've also become aware of timeline mergers where I wake up from one day to the next and things are a bit "different" like buildings moving or being remodeled, major corporation's logos changing, package design on food products changing, all overnight as if they'd been that way for a long time.

I'm suprised there wasn't any lawsuits stemming from THE MATRIX's theft of PKD's "VALIS" works. The parallels are too numerous. Computer holographic simulations, deja vu being the "glitch in the Matrix" and Trinity is obviously the dark-haired girl of whom PKD speaks archetypally. The film should have been prefaced with, "This work of fiction was inspired by the writings of Philip K Dick". (THE TRUMAN SHOW as well.)

honestly though, PKD's speech may sound very strange....but the predominant theory among physicists today is the Multiverse...in which exists infinite numbers of both yous and me (but would they actually BE you and me, even if we have identical atomic structure?). Every imaginable scenario, including the unimaginable also exists SOMEWHERE within one of these multiverses.
PKD may have been a bit insane, but the nature of reality and consciousness is very fascinating to me.

@RealityBirth Personally I think he meant a literal sense, but only if you imagine what technology the term "computer program" could refer to a million or more years from now. Our language and conceptual framework couldn't describe that kind of complexity, so we have to make do with the closest equivalent we have. If the very fabric of what we perceive as "reality" was at some level a designed simulation, then the distinction of literal and metaphorical becomes questionable.

P.S. Also close to that time, I was wide awake, but when I would close my eyes I would see an orange/redish plasma background where objects seemed to be 4th dimensional is the best way to describe it.
Think of looking at a 3D object, but only being able to see 2 dimensions of it at a time. It was the same thing, but instead I felt like I was looking at a 4D object only able to see 3 dimensions at a time. If this were to happen in front of you, it would look like something poped into existence.

@inphiknitfractal exactly, thats why the matrix is good to some extent, but....should children as young as 4 or 5 years old be subject to harsh, cruel, and obscene brainwashing torment as deemed by the secret underground, gov? theres certain lines that shouldn't be crossed. when bad people underground decide to manipulate the mentallity of children in such a way that traumatically places them in a sleeper-like state of mind, to become the future berden barrers of humiliation and depression.

if someone tries to expain the truth, the underground begins to stop their heart and force death on anyone who can expose this matrix before they can speak out and explain it. im one of those people and the underground almost killed me for exposeing it a few times, i was so terrified i was gonna die my mind went blank and i couldn't remember anything i had thought of. i hate the cowards underground. i want vengence for being cruely experiamented on.

Most likely PKD was having visions of parallel universes. I too have had visions of alternate universes, some of which there are wars between humans and what I would call "silicon life". I've also become aware of timeline mergers where I wake up from one day to the next and things are a bit "different" like buildings moving or being remodeled, major corporation's logos changing, package design on food products changing, all overnight as if they'd been that way for a long time.

@King444 ik denk van niet dude. Hij zegt dat we geprogrammeerd worden in een systeem en dat het moeilijk is om onszelf te deprogrammeren. Je moet maar eens een boek lezen van Terence Mckenna. hij weet ook zeer veel hoe dit "systeem" daadwerkelijk werkt. Maar je moet wel opletten voor "internet-propaganda". Er zijn vele vreemde theorieën over dit...Vergeet niet dat de meeste "vreemde" ideeën vaak de juiste zijn.

Well the last and ultimate truth is that There must be a God because this creation, this way of creation this perfec matrix. There must be a God at the end who is eternal. Its wierd really but any other explanation that says there is no God is impossible to the fact the the very last creation that was created and may claim to be the creator has to be created by someone. The last and very last truth is that there is an eternal father. Love is truth. Rejection of the truth creates Fear.

@axe414 I agree with you completely. Where my brain hurts and hits a brick wall is, who created the creator! I guess there are some things in life we may never know. It gives you a since of scale. I am seeing the universe as a holographic fractal, that may be infinite both in the micro and macro. It seems like the new age movement is moving towards we are all one and we are all a part of god. This my be another part truth of the Illuminati, new world order agenda,. They want to be worshiped!

@TruthSmack I also questioned who created the creator for the first time when i was 10. I still don't know the answer. However if you take time out of the equation...then you would somehow be able to answer that question. Just like everything spontaneously forms and evolves, the 'creator' (I like to call it universal spirit or mind) must have started the same? but that's just one of my views.
