If you listen carefully to John Williams' music score in E.T. during that brief moment with the Yoda costume, Williams transitions his composition to Yoda's theme from Empire Strikes Back. :) Like Spielberg said, "the galaxy is a rather small place among filmmakers."

The Yoda scene actually is Spielberg's clever mind-trick to make audience believe that ET is a real thing and Yoda is fictional, wherein of course neither of them are real space aliens, but latex-made fake puppets.

So the audience goes "Haha, it's so funny that ET thinks Yoda is real!" while Spielberg goes "Haha, it's great that the audience thinks ET is real!"
