This is why I want BM to be an exclusive tanking spec. Die hard BM fans will be hurt, but I'm sure Blizzard can find a happy median between DPS and tanking for the tree. But let's face it, BM will always be subpar simply because of pet travel time/inability to hit flying targets. So having 1 out of 3 spec be a pure tanking spec will truly make us the unique snow flake that we are. What other class can be ALL 3 roles at the same time? It'll reward smart players with a fun meta class.
@JapanForSale A total tanking spec would make us a hybrid class, which would result in (on average) a 5% dps nerf compared to other "pure" dps classes like rogue and mage. I don't want to see that happen, hunters should always be #1 on dps charts whenever possible. So I'd agree in spirit, but it would come with a cost. Besides, BM was top dps by a LOT for all of BC and early Wrath. It's not impossible.
@ArthWoW I'd say now is about the best time to be taking that 5% dps hit, since we're basically ahead by a long shot in this tier. Besides, if Blizzard wanted, they could nerf our dps to the ground without giving us a single reason. At least with BM tanking, you know why you got that 5% dps hit.
I wasn't there for BC or early Wrath, so I can't say how imba BM was. But the cons I listed up there still apply, even if Blizz overbuffs the BM tree again. Pets will still lag behind.
@atomisk I actually read a great article detailing a history of blue posts on this subject. While in practice, "pure" classes are rarely always top dps, Blizzard has openly stated there should be an edge to the pure dps classes compared to hybrid class dps, to make them relevant to bring in high-level raids. The 5% figure, however, ostensibly the amount Blizz wants pure classes ahead, is a myth. A definite figure was never stated by Blizz.
@DayFul Prove is a strong word. A developer's intent and the final numbers are two different things, especially when dealing with trying to balance all dps data within acceptable percentages.
I tend not to care which classes are "top" and what should be done with them. All such discussions are largely academic. On the whole, Blizzard has taken good care of hunters in PvE. Until that changes, I don't quibble over it, and enjoy our secondary tanking niche.
@JapanForSale That is the best idea ever. I remember when cata launched they said they wanted combat (rogues) and enhancement (shaman) to be kind of tanky. They should of made BM a tank spec instead.
@adolphjlj1 Fuck Cata. Disappointing rip-off cash-in-on-a-dying-brand expansion. Finished the piss poor "follow the rail" story mode up to 85, grinded my ass off on the then-hard normals and heroics (i herd u kan faceroll dem nao lulz. welcum bak, WoTLK), then just logged on Tuesdays and Thursdays for raid nights. Finished normal mode, burned out on heroic, everyone left for 4 months, shitty non-patch came out, bored on ZA, 4.2 hit, did 2 Firelands quest and was bored outta my mind already.
@atomisk Who needs links? Go look at the combat and enhancement tree's. You'll see a couple tankish talents mixed in there. Plus shamans have the Rockbiter Weapon spell. Kthx.
@adolphjlj1 This is nothing new. Hunter pets were listed as off-tanks as early as the extended vanilla manual. In practice, this hasn't always been the case, but it's a design element that's been in place for years. At we've been able to comfortably tank heroic for at least 2 expansions, so it's worked out fairly well.
@Scorpian974 There were 3 hunters, and it was back in Wrath when MD threat didn't fade. Made threat a non-issue. I actually accomplished this with one hunter later in the expansion, and had no problems. Dps had to be careful early on, but the pet can attack constantly and does surprising threat. With all the running required, and with some intelligence use of threat mitigation cooldowns, your dps doesn't have nerf itself after about 30 second into the fight.
@hornm67 Thanks, and yes I'm still tanking. Not with a worm these days, but Cata dungeons (heroic or regular) are tankable with the right prep. Not yet raids (I don't include Algalon, who is tankable but a joke), but that will come eventually.
It really is a shame non player units cant get buffed anymore. Or pet tanking would be incredibly viable in heroics for cata with the right cc. Makes me sad really. Ive stopped playing after i got 4 85's...
@DemonicDooba Pets get a much greater percentage of hunter stats than in Wrath, so it's a similar scale as it was before, just easier to remember for buffs.
Because pet tanking IS viable in Cata heroics, as much so as it's ever been. The fact that heroics in general are harder than they ever were in Wrath makes it tricky, but far from impossible.
@zupels007 Nope. Not only was the hunter columnist at wow.com present for the raid (link in the info), but this feat was duplicated by a few others in the months following this video. They can be found littered around youtube.
@FilthyRagon 3 hunters. 2 would have been plenty though, and I actually had some attempts with only myself to misdirect my pet. That was tricky. A properly spec'd hunter pet can generate quite a bit of threat anyway. Even with just me, it was only our top 1-2 dps that caught up to me on threat.
@pengupuff - Indeed you did. All the stamina makes for an excellent tanking trinket. I used to use both, but for ICC tanking I bought the 264 frost emblem stam trinket.
@rossmiller90 Worms are tanking pets. But, simply, keeping him alive wasn't an issue for the healers. The acid spit armor debuff helped our dps out, and thus our raid, more than the shield wall would have.
@jaywizardess Mostly 3 hunters for multiple MDs. But there's a full writeup on this fight in the pet tanking tab of the Warcraft Hunter's Union, as well as talent builds, gear, etc. that contribute to answering your question.
@reneg8 No t5. Great for soloing, horrible for tanking. Loss in health pool is probably the biggest issue, but threat as well. healers do way more healing than you ever could, t5 or not.
@ArthWoW Alrigth thanks, I kept 2 t5, in jic I needed it to solo stuff, so far I haven't tried, maybe I should. I will check warcraft hunters union for some info on this.
Nice to see that some are still working on unusual methods of boss killings - I guess for me the most difficult part would be to get 9 people to help me trying this ;)
How does the worm hold aggro so well, besides misdirections and tricks? Is it specc'd so that players can't overaggro? I'm curious since I too have a worm and raid as BM, and this looks like a lot of fun.
@KimmyDare My pet tanking guides at the Warcraft Hunters Union will help to answer your questions. For this particular fight we had 3 hunters for MDs (rogues can't tricks to pets), but 2 would've been enough and many fights are doable with no extra hunters, provided your dps is intelligent and understanding.
I do solo tanking with my turtle pet because of his shell shield ability that reduces all damage by 50% - what are the benefits of a worm pet? My pet easily rivals geared tanks in terms of HP (50-60k) with full buffs. Aggro hold maybe?
@punkrawks1988 The worm provides an armor debuff that increased all physical raid damage, since we didn't have a warrior for the same buff. A turtle would've been an option, but the healers had no problem keeping him up.
yah totall bs no F'ing way...just finished the fight 2 days ago and it was hard, the debuff on phase 2 stacks and u take 200% more magic dmg unless you switch out tanks...weaksauce
@whistledogg i play a hunter my self.. and i can tell u many times pets wont get hit by spells players have to avoid.. like the mystic buff.. and the dot u get ;).. so yes.. i can be done.
@Jones16Teen That's happened with most of my videos. But it's legit. The hunter columnist for wow.com was actually in-group for this one, and the guides on the Warcraft Hunter's Union detail exactly how to go about doing everything that I do. It's not as hard as many believe, it just takes the right gear and a little practice.
Would you mind giving you pets talent build? I haven't played my hunter since BC, traded mains for prot warrior but it appears I can go back to my hunter and do both:) Crazy stuff. Just curious about ur armory and ur pets build. ..I just quickly peeked at your other vids and see a pet vs Lord Marrowgar. How many end game bosses has your pet tanked successfully??
@brthomas503 The pet tanking section of the Warcraft Hunter's Union will answer all your questions and more, including spec and gear, since there's a bit too much here to deal with in a quick youtube response. As for bosses, pretty much every boss I've tanked (with a couple less-impressive exceptions) is in my youtube channel here.
@Jones16Teen Sorry it makes you angry. I like seeing awesome stuff from any class. For what it's worth, it's taken me a long time to get to this point, and there are plenty of raid bosses that definitely aren't tankable by hunters.
@Dardramune1 One hunter is usually not enough to maintain aggro in a raid setting. Two is usually enough. We did have three, though, as a result of the group that happened to be on that night.
Now this is what I call skill and knowing your class better. Simply amazing and flawless game. It is interesting how can a pet keep threat (of course it needs a skilled hunter) :) very well done
@xNurmix No warrior in group for sunders, so the worm increased raid dps with his armor debuff. The healers had no trouble keeping him up, so the turtle's mitigation wasn't needed.
@ArthWoW well to a response to this, Since i am a rogue i know that rogues can apply a better sunder which is called (Expose Armor) but of course maybe the rogue didn't want to trade his personal dps for more raid dps. If the rogue was your guildy then i meant not to offend anyone. It's like the rogue can use tricks on someone to increase their dps and if he has the 2pc T10 then he gets 15 energy back in return
@copznrobbas pets take reduced AoE, and with the right build, get a hunge extra percentage of heals. The more i thought of this, a well spec'd pet has a better chance than a person..pets never get ice blocked either, and never gets Mystic Buffet. I might look more into using a tank based pet as BM for the things pets bring to the table.
Don't feel bad.if a warrior got all the bonus effects a pet did, and never worried about what Sindragosa does to the players, then it might be comparable
@RadiantEye71 For reasons you stated (and a couple others) Sindy is really a perfect storm for hunter tanks. "Normal" tanks need not feel threatened, however. No other fight sets up this well for us, and it's doubtful there will ever be another so catered to us, and it's really the only fight in Wrath that was preferable to have a pet tank compared to another class.
do you reccomend using a worm or croc over using a turtle taking the extra damage/threat output over the extra defensive cd. also wondering if u were using any t5 to help with the healing when u tanked her. also if u were using the extreme soloing spec or the bm tree with MM talents
@TreverJ2008 Great questions, but too much to cover in a short response. You mentioned the extreme soloing spec, so I assume you're familiar with the WHU where a lot of these questions will be answered shortly. But the short answers are: no t5 (or t7 in this case...went for stam stacking), MM spec (MDs don't do everything, so extra focus is needed), and we discussed the turtle but didn't want healers getting used to it, then being surprised when it was on cooldown.
@prochaos80 Ah, they mentioned it on the podcast. I didn't realize. Anyway, cool. And tbh, this is kind of the biggest pet tanking challenge out there in this expansion. I'll probably put tanking on the backburner until Cataclysm now.
@Qgsopp Bears are only useful for AoE, though I did use them for a couple old videos before I had figured that out myself. Single target threat, worm or croc is best. And with 2 or more hunters, threat shouldn't be an issue. Tank pets generate decent threat as it is, and the extra MD's take care of the rest.

@ArthWoW well to a response to this, Since i am a rogue i know that rogues can apply a better sunder which is called (Expose Armor) but of course maybe the rogue didn't want to trade his personal dps for more raid dps. If the rogue was your guildy then i meant not to offend anyone. It's like the rogue can use tricks on someone to increase their dps and if he has the 2pc T10 then he gets 15 energy back in return

should feel bad about my tanking if i can't tank her as a warrior but this worm can???
copznrobbas 1 year ago 31
@copznrobbas yes

@copznrobbas unfortunately: yes :P
FausTTaenzeR 1 year ago
@copznrobbas pets take reduced AoE, and with the right build, get a hunge extra percentage of heals. The more i thought of this, a well spec'd pet has a better chance than a person..pets never get ice blocked either, and never gets Mystic Buffet. I might look more into using a tank based pet as BM for the things pets bring to the table.
Don't feel bad.if a warrior got all the bonus effects a pet did, and never worried about what Sindragosa does to the players, then it might be comparable
RadiantEye71 1 year ago
@RadiantEye71 For reasons you stated (and a couple others) Sindy is really a perfect storm for hunter tanks. "Normal" tanks need not feel threatened, however. No other fight sets up this well for us, and it's doubtful there will ever be another so catered to us, and it's really the only fight in Wrath that was preferable to have a pet tank compared to another class.

can you use tricks of the trade on a pet?
erik060208 1 year ago
@erik060208 Nope, no tricks. Just on other players.

do you reccomend using a worm or croc over using a turtle taking the extra damage/threat output over the extra defensive cd. also wondering if u were using any t5 to help with the healing when u tanked her. also if u were using the extreme soloing spec or the bm tree with MM talents
TreverJ2008 1 year ago
@TreverJ2008 Great questions, but too much to cover in a short response. You mentioned the extreme soloing spec, so I assume you're familiar with the WHU where a lot of these questions will be answered shortly. But the short answers are: no t5 (or t7 in this case...went for stam stacking), MM spec (MDs don't do everything, so extra focus is needed), and we discussed the turtle but didn't want healers getting used to it, then being surprised when it was on cooldown.

Just heard u done this on the podcast, had to quickly search it. Impressive man! what boss ya gonna try next ? :p
prochaos80 1 year ago
@prochaos80 Ah, they mentioned it on the podcast. I didn't realize. Anyway, cool. And tbh, this is kind of the biggest pet tanking challenge out there in this expansion. I'll probably put tanking on the backburner until Cataclysm now.
ArthWoW 1 year ago
Nice, i tought bear was good on single mob tanking, anyways my question is how the heck does ur pet hold aggro? :S
Qgsopp 1 year ago
@Qgsopp Bears are only useful for AoE, though I did use them for a couple old videos before I had figured that out myself. Single target threat, worm or croc is best. And with 2 or more hunters, threat shouldn't be an issue. Tank pets generate decent threat as it is, and the extra MD's take care of the rest.
ArthWoW 1 year ago
@Qgsopp I guess he MD'ed to it every chance he got
