  • water when the soil is dry. although most of these trees are very picky depending on their type, and if they're coniferous or deciduous, you can very well depict when to water them if the soil is dry. also try not to drown it, and try not to let the soil go dry completely. but it all really depends on your tree, i've seen so many different places saying so many different things. i'm no bonsai master or anything and i don't know your tree, so just ask a nursery or something for the best advise.

  • The advice the person who I bought my bonsai from says to "leave the bonsai out in the crappy weather. Plant them up against the house and they love it." So during the winter and rainy seasons. he also said, "they hate sun, if you leave them out in the sun they will die." 'Litterally over-water them. Put them in a bucket of water filled about 4-6 inches, and then splash the water around every here and there." Maybe that was just the type I got.

  • i just bought an umbrella bonsai. mini trees are cute :)

  • need to submerge the pot in a bowl of water.....i used a salad bowl and the rocks stayed on.

it needs about 10 mins i think :)

  • I got a bonsai for Christmas, and the way I've been watering it was to leave it to soak in water about three quarters of the way to the top of the pot for about 45 minutes. By doing this the leaves are a good deep green colour. Is it fine for me to water my bonsai this way or should I do it differently?

  • thank you

  • fuck yer village.... i killed my juniper asshole... let your plant dry out a little bit guy

  • so how do you water small trees???

  • "Insects dont like to be wet"...Interesting advice from the "Expert" village. Sorry but this is terrible advice. To any potential Bonsai enthusiasts, use a neem concentrate like Azatrol for control of everything to spider mites to white flies, and Botanigard for any root zone pests, such as the diabolical root aphid.

  • i doin that and it died

  • i need do this everyday ?

  • i read in this bonsai manual thAT IF ITS GOING BROWN ITS GROWING MOULD AND U ARE WATERING TO MUCH

    oops capitals

  • u just have to spray a bonsai twice in every place

  • what????? i went to a site and they said that they dont need alot of water

lol, but that site didnt have HUGE bosai like this

  • WHAT!!!!???? I FLOOD MY BONSAIS AND THEY ARE THRIVING IN MY SUNROOM

  • I watered my first bonsai tree every day and it died and i water my second bonsai tree every day and its brown but i still love it. :(

  • @jdfox1 U cant water it every day u have to water it after 2-3 days

  • @jdfox1 is it still alive ?

  • @jdfox1 you should water it every two days (and not like he watterd the bonsai) put it in a pot half full of watter and let it soak untill there are bubbles coming out or it will droun. And you should get a moisture meter for yr bonsai so you would know when to watter it.

  • @dextreme101 Moisture meters are a joke, unreliable, and an utter waste of time. Also, its not as simple as just" water it every two days." How often you need to water is solely based on how fast the plant is uptaking the water in the soil. If the plant is smaller in a med or large pot, youll be watering less often.A large plant in a smaller or med pot, more often. If its hot out for a # of days, possibly a daily watering. Locate different points in your soil to do a finger check for moisture

  • @dextreme101 it died. I have to get another. Oh well! :)

  • help, received a bonsi tree for mothers day, the leaves are turning yellow and falling off, what am i doing

  • @jbrenstrom Yellow leaves are an indication of over watering, If the soil is damp too the touch then generally its fine as it is. Of course tree's vary in care so your specific tree may have some specific needs. Google is your friend :)

  • dang hes got a nice collection, I'd love to have such a collection someday.

  • I have a question. i know this is old but i just got a bonsai tree for my birthday, but i dont know how to water it because it's got rocks everywhere and i cant remove them. could anyone help me?

  • @OCoptimusconvoy and anyone else with rocks glued on top of the bonsai soil. The rocks are glued on for ease in shipping. I was told by a dealer the glue holding them will disolve.(I never owned one w/glued rocks)

Don't wait . Break the rocks off. Then you can see if the soil needs water or not. Use a hammmer gently if needed.

Water when your plant needs it. NOT when you need to. Remember One "OH Shoot!"day, can wipe out ten years of proper "Atta Boy" watering.

  • ok thnx!

  • @OCoptimusconvoy . I know your post is a year old, but here's my advice for watering a rocky, non-porous bonsai landscape. It IS still alive, right? I hope so. Do it slowly. Very, very slowly (watering, that is) so the water wont run off all over the place. It may take a long time to get water into the roots, but it's necessary. Also, be careful not to give it too much water because if the landscape is not porous, then water also takes a long time to evaporate from the soil. Good luck!

  • @OCoptimusconvoy . Also, you could just submenrge the whole pot in a water-filled bucket or pan, wait until the bubbles stop coming out of the soil (an indicator that it's completely soaked, and then remove it from the water. Repeat the process when ever the soil is good and dry. Don't do it more than necessary or you'll drown the tree. Again, good luck!

  • @OCoptimusconvoy just pour the water over the rocks and it should go through

  • @OCoptimusconvoy I don't know if this helps, but you fill your sink with water up to about and inch or so up the bonsai trunk, let it soak for 10 to 15 mins, then see if it's heavy, if it is, then you have successfully watered it.

  • @OCoptimusconvoy Bonsai soil is rocky, water the tree

  • whats that got to do with bonsai growing

  • Comment removed

  • that's ridiculous, let me be environmentally unresponsible, what damage is not having a fancy handle gonna do?

  • Ussually, water them on top, every day, while 1 time a week put them IN the water.

    :)

  • I water only when the topsoil feels dry. I was told the topsoil should be moist but not damp unless it has just been watered.

  • You are right, you should usually only water the plant when the topsoil feels dry. You water the plant until the water comes out from the drainage holes underneath. DON'T water it

until the plant is absolutely soaked, because this can cause long term root rotting and the plant could, and can, die.

You should only water the whole plant in the evening out out of the sun, because the sun will evaporate the water from the leaves during the day, and will burn them.

  • @Dimipoke1 thanks for your reply, very appreciated.

  • howdy people i have 3 diff types of bonsai tree's.and i was told to leave it in a dish of water.or can i water from the top. is this true .

  • You can water from the top.

  • were do i buy bonsai coil? cant i just use normal coil that u use for the garden ? for veges and that??

  • hi, when i bought my bonsai tree i was told to only water it occassionally when the soil got extremely dry (which may be around every 2 weeks); but you are telling me to water them every day!? i own an indoor evergreen red pepper bonsai - how often should i be watering this??

  • definetly not once every 2 weeks!

  • yeah i figured, i've been told something different everywhere i look but at first i thought it best to follow the advice the seller gave me; over time i have learnt it was very wrong. i now give it a small watering every few days and a submerging water every week or two with bonsai feed in the water too. leaving it 2 weeks before watering leaves the soil SO dry, i knew there was something false with my initial advice from the seller...

  • Probably every three to four days, unless the top of the soil is still damp since the last watering.

  • chasnsx, please stop advising others of what you barely know. So you block me because I was doing what you are doing here, giving advice to who ever was asking. Goes to show you don't like looking like a fool. Please stop making bonsai looking like a joke. Others really don't know bonsai, and when they see your ignorant videos, it's teaching what has no foundation.

  • Chasnsx please stop advising others. You have been doing bondai for only a year and your videos just are proof if this. you don't know who to whore properly, you don't know who to transplat, and many other things. please stop giving advise.

  • I have a Canadien Hemlock which is naturally a very slow growing tree, I also transplanted moss over the entire area of the top soil in a 6x8 inch pot. Now.... I mist the tree and moss thoughly 5-6 times a day and give it a good amount of water 1/week. I am knew to this hobby - can someone tell me if this is the correct process and critique what I might be doing wrong?????

  • are you insane, this is a fu... lie

  • Yo What the fuh..I have a juniper and I think it only needs to be watered every few days right? As the soil does not like to be real wet? Yeah? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

  • depends where you are mate and what time of the year it is. If it's really hot where your at then yeah your bonsai will need watering every day however if its cold and not much sun every few days would be fine.

  • it depends on wat kind of soil u have! if it is a fast drain soil and live in a hot place is most likely to water every day like me! i live in south florida!

  • how often should i water my indoor bonsai and how much water should i give it?

  • thanks my sisster will love your vid its helpfull

  • any tree can be indoor bonsai or outdoor.. indoor bonsai need a put at outside, sometime. and juniper, it like dry, dislike over-watering. so, the soil must be good drainage.

  • Actually, there is no such thing as an indoor bonsai, unless you can find a tree that grows indoors, the only plants that wont die as easily are tropical plants or trees, but even those need quite a bit of sun.

  • concertgrand, i got my nozzle at home depot just like the one he has.

  • I'm not an expert, but I'm sure juniper are outdoor bonsai. If you want an indoor go with ficus

  • Does anyone know what kind of a nozzle that is? Or better yet, where one might be able to find one like that.

  • Some one told me that he bought it in bonsai village in Omiya, Japan, but he also said that they began to appear in specialised bonsai nurseries.

  • I've read from many sources that junipers are outdoor plants and if kept indoors, they will die, even if they appear to be alive.

  • Yup, dont ever try to grow a juniper indoors unless you want it to die in one or two years, in which case all your work goes down the drain.

  • disnt realise about the screen but as for the sun i live in the uk so wen it does appear you have take care as the trees arnt used to it.

  • junipers should be brought in for winter protection but put straight back out asap,as for watering the best way ive found is to feel the weight of it once youve watered it and then when you feel it is lighter give it a water dont ever rely on what the suface of the soil looks like as this dosnt give you a true idea wether it needs water and i would ever water foliage in the sun as it burns the leaves..

  • Oh and there is no such thing as an "indoor juniper"

Get it outside full sun before it dies.

  • Not really the best advice. The bonsai trees should not be watererd to a schedual but only when the tree need it. Especailly in different seasons. Great trees though it obviously is working for you!

  • is this the same with a very small indoor juniper? i've heard to let it almost dry out before watering again but i'm very new to this. thanks
