All my aches and pains were gone. The people I am most fond of in all the world were with me. I could hear their chatting around me. I could feel the presence of their bodies, the warmth of their hands. I wanted to hold the moment fast and thought, "Come what may, this is happiness. I cannot wish for anything better. Now, for a few minutes, I can experience perfection. And I feel profoundly grateful to my life, which gives me so much.
anyone got the clip with the sisters reaction to the sick sister (one with fear, the other with disgust)? been looking for it. got this on dvd somewhere, but can't find it.. and sorry for not remembering the names xD
The strongest catharsis in history of the cinema. This movie looks for the final MEANING.The other two sisters cannot find it due to their superficial behaviour. And finally Agnes, martyr and saint, finds it: It sounds like Agnes, now without pain,in state of the deepest,non-superficial happiness, whispering from the other dimension:my dearest, this is the final MEANING,the final TRUTH.Dont be afraid, love each other, find the compassion.Make good from evil. This is the PERFECTION,this is the HEAVEN.
The scene where Karin cuts her vagina with a broken piece of a wine glass and smears the blood on her face, so that her husband would be repulsed by her and not wish to have sex, is forever etched into my mind. Bergman was a legend.
Naw, I see them wearing their usual clothes, circa 1930. Actually, I like to imagine CRIES AND WHISPERS completely redone with the Brothers Marx in the key roles: Zeppo as Anna, Groucho as Maria, Harpo as Agnes, and Chico as Karen. You could put Margaret Dumont in the role of the doctor. Such fantasy gives me inestimable pleasure.
One of the most beautiful, moving and trascendent endings to a film. The film is an absolute masterwork, one of Bergman's very best, and of course, one of the best films ever.
one of the greatest Bergman's movies ever

The pietà with the maid Anna holding Agnes was used for a Sweish stamp. I have it in a frame.

I like to imagine the Marx brothers in the place of the three sisters in that final shot, with Zeppo playing the servant.

do you imagine them wearing dresses? personally I'm really sad that we'll never actually see this imaginary sequence

i have never seen the film --is it like Bergman's response to Chekhov Three sisters?

The explanation for the red fade-outs is that Bergman believed this to be the colour of the human soul, I recall reading somewhere.

try to get a copy of the last interview bergman gave at his home on gotland. it is an amazing series of interviews over several days at his home.
