@custardpiekashmir gibson is in the hole 500 mil, and he almost, JUST almost sold the entire gibson name to guitar center. thats what im pissed about, dude i play a 1995 flying v reissue how do you think i feel?
sounds like he almost lost his integrity, but he didn't so we shouldn't be pissed now should we? anyway, what i AM pissed of about is their quality control and quality of instruments overall, even before the raid. and don't get me started on chambered bodies etc etc... they lost a lot of money due to the raid, but they lost a lot of potential costumers fucking around too
Gibson and other US guitars manufacturers are already in China,Korea making Epiphone's and others for you,
Why do you superior red neck's always blame other people first, do you honestly think China or Korea forced Gibson and others to open shop over there.
The issue in my opinion: The debacle with Gibson is secondary to the fact that this law is extremely onerous to small businesses and private luthiers. If the law is enforced vigorously, it will spend the end of what has been a way of life for centuries by many people...the simple act of building a guitar. I'm glad Gibson was big enough to bring attention to this, but they are NOT the only ones affected by an act which is very unwieldly and is extramely difficult to abide by.
oh my god put a fucking gun to my head this is soo stupid.. just because it says made in U.S.A doesnt mean its true. probably assembled in the U.S.. Karma's a bitch Henry, Karma"s a bitch.
Idiots below....do you want China, Korea, or some other country doing the labor to make Gibson guitars, taking away American Jobs...India Customs ok'd the shipment of this product that was Seized by our Feds supposedly enforcing a Indian Law, not an American Law. Gibson has broken no American Law, you idiots below. It's one year before a Presidential Election and Gibson is a major contributor to the RNC, and they have waited 2 years since 2009 to enforce thisi Indian Law...
The thing that gets me the most is that they have that phony asshole CEO lying to his employees and idiots like JJ French to convince them that they might be in trouble too. Look, if you own a guitar with some illegal wood in it, unless you actually knew that it had illegal wood when you bought you're fine. There's no Mens Rea component in your "crime" thus the Justice Department won't prosecute you.
This is a witchhunt that is rooted in the political followings of Mr Juszkiewicz.
Apparently Gibson doesnt even import their own wood, it actually comes through luthiers Mercantile lmi, so if the government has any investigation then surely it should be with them instead ?!
If i lived in the US and paid tax i would be very concerned how the government was wasting my money
The only thing I can credit Gibson with here is a careful viral campaign to improve their image after being caught breaking Federal Law. Endangered woods are big money, and they legitimately got busted.
Sensationalist moron Jay Jay French overextends this to purchasers of instruments, something without precedent.
@mrbiotech Well Mr. Biotech. You work faster than the Federal Gov. in proving Gibson guilty. So keep spouting about how Gibson got legitimately busted wich I know you have no clue about because all you know is what you've read. Why don't you have a little patience and wait and see what the verdict is before you hang someone.

@mrbiotech Fuck, I think accidentally thumbsed you down. Anyways, this is absolutely correct, it's worse than OJ's search for the real killers except most smart people don't give a shit enough to call them on their bullshit. Right on my man, right fucking on. I don't think I'll buy another Gibson as long as they're on this kick.
@mkhf580 This is a stupid comment and defies any business decision you can make. You can legitimately charge an extra two to three grand for a guitar made in America than you can for one made in China or Korea. They're making money hand over fist with their American brands...there's not much the justice department can do curtail that, nor do I think the justice department really wants them to stop that, they just want them to behave in a legal manner like every other US guitar company.
I am a small french guy loving Gibson guitars. I do not know all the details of this bad story. But I hope it is only a dark cloud that will disappear.
Gibson is american as the "baguette, camembert" are french.
I have waited around 35 years to reach to be able to buy my own LesPaul Standard. And I am proud having taken this long time for a dream.
Do not throw away your motivation and passion for these so beautiful, very high quality and clever instruments.
@francois1385 Francois you are an honorary American today brother. Great analogy with the wonderful bread and cheese of your country. And congratulations on finally getting the Standard. I bought a '74 Standard and an '82 Custom 20+ years ago having grown up listening to Ace Frehley and Randy Rhoads. These are stellar instruments made by dedicated American workers.
Tons of guitar companies are using the same wood that Gibson is in trouble for using. Why don't they get shut down? It's because Gibson doesn't help fund the democrat party. Furthermore, they're a private business which does not support the democrat way.
The LEAGAL issue is NOT the wood. Gibson is legally cleared to use the materials at hand. It's that the wood needs to be finished by Indian labor. This is a miniscule offense, and I'd rather the gov not spend my tax money on such foolishness.
@ForestMan1129 So were those within those agencies involved all Democrats as well? Do you really believe that there was some order handed down from the oval office that called for a SWAT team to raid Gibson over a lack of Democratic fundraising? Do you realize that if that were the motive, they'd have even larger companies to go after, who happen to be committing real atrocities that they could pin them with, who are staunch Republican Party supporters? I'm surprised this was acted on at all.
@VintageburstStandard I don't think anyone 'high up' had anything to do with it. I'm surprised this was acted on as well. It would seem, though I don't know, that the Lacey Act was picked up by some lesser group within government and is being used immaturely. I just think it's interesting that Gibson has been encouraged to leave the country twice in the passed two years by the Federal Department of Justice while under a Democrat president. I'm not blaming Democrats, just wondering.
This is bullshit. You guys broke the law and got caught. You guys are talking like there is only. One wood that can be used for the fretboard. You got caught with illegal brazillian rosewood which is pretty much extinct. Use a different type of rosewood or use ebony. I am in subscribing. I used to be a gibson fan but, you guys are fucktards getting mad at the government because you broke the law
@cobraman115 The RW that Gibson got "caught with" wasn't "Brazilian", it was Indian, which is used by pretty much EVERY guitar company in the US. Also, Gibson (according to what I've seen/read) didn't break any laws? The issue is about the DOJ's interpretation of Indian law that states, and I'm paraphrasing, that "in order for a product (not just RW) to be exported, most of the work has to be done by Indian wrokers". The only problem is that if it wasn't, then how was it exported to begin with?
@ghosthead2008 Where have you seen and read this? And with all of our own pandering for "American Jobs" shouldn't we be a little more sympathetic of other countries striving to protect their own labor force? It sounds to me like a simple case of smuggled wood for higher profits. We'll see when the case is fleshed out I suppose, though it's seeming to me like the age old tale of the greedy company caught with it's hand sin the proverbial cookie jar.

My question is (and, I'm sure that there's a LOT more to this than we're getting), why hasn't the Indian government said anything on the matter?
It's good to see fellow New York musicians coming out and speaking about this. My wife and I were getting worried about all the apathy about this issue.

Yeah this is a shame, but I would say most people are siding with Gibson so that's good. I'm curious t what the motivation is for the government because I haven't heard that side very much at all.
America is not a capitalist country anymore... it's now CRONY CAPITALIST country that HARASSES small businesses. We've given all these CRIMINALS on WALL ST over TRILLION dollars and they still go after small business.
@Stringprodigy Yeah, their business practices have been shit for a decade anyways. They charge smaller vendors a 100K introductory order and then 75K a year after that, that and they TELL YOU what you're going to buy from them, not the other way around. Yeah, telling mom and pop guitar shops that they need to buy an eight thousand dollar Gibson Mandolin just to sell a few Epiphones and cheaper Les Pauls...great American values, there Gibson.
Every other guitar manufacturer is able to make high quality guitars (in quite a few cases, higher than anything Gibson makes) without using endangered species of woods. Heritage, Dean, PRS, Fender, Jackson, and every US custom shop besides Gibson is able to make quality instruments without killing the planet. Look at the foreign companies like Ibanez, Schecter, and ESP are also able to do this. There's really no excuse for what Gibson did.

@Malikon13 It is an emotional moment for freedom. Sorry you don't get it....Sad.

@KyCavalier And he's a Republican in the run up to a presidential election. We have to boost our image with the anti-corporate and environmentalist movements without inconveniencing Democratic donors.
