I am just an outsider looking at all of this and I question the timing of this vote; in other words, why now? Why haven't they done this before their economy went down the drain?

Just as there was inexcusable oversight in the U.S., U.K. and elsewhere, there are reports that the FME in Iceland got careless; I have no reason to doubt the validity of those reports.

Now Iceland has no choice but to join the EU (which by the look on people's faces, they don't want to) to repay their incurred debts. It's a real shame.

Iceland are screwed financially. It makes perfect sense for them to join the EU and benefit from the safety net afforded by the European Central Bank. Ireland would be in a similar position to Iceland were it not for the fact that Ireland is a full member of both the EU and the Euro.
