  • A very sombre experince...please read The Dark Threads, by Jean Davison, for further insight into the awful events......

  • @desiredperil they have turned about half of the estate into flats but there is still slot un touched! Also you can go into like a WMC type bar where you can still see some one of the old wards.

  • Was also in the Merrifield hellhole 1992-94. A big hug to all the M/F survivors out there.xxx

  • Those of you responsible for the barbaric torture and abuse of these individuals, not just in Royds - I hope you fucking burn in hell.

  • is it still there or has it ALL being built over?

  • @moglinboglin. Place is built up now, with kids playing freely where there was so much darkness. They have done a total cover-up on that. U remember Daffyd, etc? And Dot? xx

  • tone vale merrifield unit

  • Has anyone heard of Merrifield Family and Adolescent Unit? Was in Taunton. A hospital for kids. Was a patient there myself in 1991, at the age of 14. Saw stuff happen to others in that place that shouldnt have been done to anyone, let alone a child! Place was a death-hole! Lets not forget the kids who suffered in these places too... x

  • @fizzyladybird77

Yes, indeed. The book 'Delivered Unto Lions' is inspired by the Merrifield Unit at Tone Vale. There's a promo video for it on YouTube.

  • @fizzyladybird77 I was there at the same time as you. Haven't seen the name of that place for so long but as soon as I read it brought back so many horrific memories. Unbelievable.

  • i have done some work on the building and it has strange atmosphere the bell tower is the creepyest it .

  • Disgraceful and still it goes on. Who was it who said that Psychiatry "is the most unprofessional, umprincipled product sold to the utterly bewildered"?

I have a good freind who was really smart at school, went on a got a first at Uni then went through a bout of depression. ECT was forced upon him and now he has no short term memory at all. His long term memory is seriously flawed and he stutters uncontrollably.

    Ridiculous state of affairs.

  • Great video, and very sad. thanks for the upload :)

  • in that grave yard with the 3,000 people they should put a big stone wall with all of the name's of those who have died in High Royds Hospital sins they can not replace all of the grave's and for that matter fit them all

  • Well done Mark, you really are bringing about the changes you have always sought to see in this world. So many are thankful for your strength *****

  • I live just down the road from this place and it's a very imposing place to this day despite all the development. My mum was a student nurse there back when all these "treatments" were taking place. She says it was a horrific thing to see. So sad really.

  • Things have improved a great deal in a short time, but there is still room for much more improvement. Mental health professionals are still very prone to the effect described in 1973 by Rosenhan in his paper "on being sane in insane places", even 37 years on.
