so true. would love to connect on facebook. this is a bit public :> "they" say one of the problems with this generation of kids is that they are overprotected...car seats, baby seats, high chairs, etc. sailing is a good way to take risks in a wonderful, natural environment, and kids just fall in love with boats. serendipity is definitely part of our family!!!
yeah, our grandson noah was out with "papa" and his dad in a bit of a storm, he was 12 at the time. heavy seas, heeling badly etc...he was hanging on to the winch and praying...it was really funny they said. he's done it again many times- he's 14 now. they get used to it. but safety first of course, no babies in that kind of weather. I HAVE PICS on facebook, (Denie Heppner)under album called "serendipity".
Will have to look you up my hubby has a facebook account. I think it's good to be challenged when you're a kid (when you're old enough) there's too much health and safety. I think kids who are never allowed to think on their feet or experience the thrill of climbing trees will not have strong skills for dealing with a life that is unpredictable. L
well it're really nice to see beautiful things on youtube, there is so much garbage! we have an old boat, 1982 CT, "Serendipity", out of taiwan...34 ft ocean-going full-keel "slug", but we love her. we've had the grandkids on her since they were just babes, but only in nice weather. they love to hang off the side with their feet in the water when we heel. i'm a bit nervous too but they are pretty careful and adore sailing. i'll have to post a video next time. we live/sail in the Philippines.
Your boat's big, we're only 23ft! I imagine the water is beautiful where you live. Here it's cold and not often very clear as there's a lot of sand churned up in it. When we sail on the other grandad's boat in Cornwall we see more as the water's often clear and blue.
Max lost his confidence a year ago, stormy & water coming over the sides. Dad and grandad didn't notice he was really scared, I was home with Hannah. But he can't wait to go out again, we've slept on Leola and put the fun back! L
what a lovely video. some really sweet shots...hannah saying quietly "i love you"....three generations...the sound of the wind in the sails...a perfect family video!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. The boat used to belong to Joe's father so it's a family boat. As his dad now lives in Cornwall these videos keep him in touch with his old boat and growing family. But I'm always thrilled when others get something out of them too! Cheers, Lesley
It's a good place to moor our boat because we can choose to sail on the river or go out to sea. We only go out to sea when it's an all adult trip. We have a lot of fun on the boat whether it's in or out of the water. Cheers, Lesley
It wasn't bad at all actually. We wrapped up before we went out 'cos it can be chilly just because you're on the water at the coast. But the distinct lack of wind coupled with the sunshine meant it was very pleasant. Cheers, Lesley
It was a perfect day for Hannah's first trip out on the boat as there was so little wind it wasn't too exciting. We all enjoy our boat. Cheers, Lesley
Lovely film - brought back memories! I used to keep my yacht "Tokomaru" in the Tide Mill until 2 years ago - had some great times on the Deben - especially anchored at Prettymans Point or Ramsholt. Cheers!
Thank you. Yes scrambling ashore for some delicious food is definitely a major attraction. The Deben's just right for the age of our kids though they aren't keen on us getting it wrong and ending up in the mud. It will be a while before we venture out to sea. Cheers, Lesley
Oh I do love boats and sailing ships! Leola is a classic for sure! I felt as though I wanted to hug her. (silly me) Max handles a boat very well! He's going to make a great sailor. I want to come over and go for a sail!!
I think it's because she's been around so long Nancy and she's made of wood. I can't help but stroke and pat her! Must be in the genes both mine and Joe's family have the sailing bug, though my mum can't stand the water and our siblings aren't bothered. Cheers, Lesley
Thanks. Yes it's a Stuart Turner but I don't know if it's an 8! It's given us lots of grief and has had lots of work done on it and so it's not always referred to with affection. How did you know is it the racket it makes? Cheers, Lesley
Beautiful.. Never been to Felixstowe or thereabouts.. When I first started sailing to England the ferries still went to both Felixstowe and Harwich.. now they don't even hardly make Harwich.. Mind you, I have only ever sailed between Denmark and England, as that was the closest route for me.. The Sweden - England service would have taken me much longer.. :)
My uncle had a very nice boat which Hhe used to take us out in every summer when we were there on holiday.. we mainly went out to the islands of the Gothenburg archipelago, for sun and sea.. the last time I went there was in my cousins boat, we went fishing for mackerel and whiting.. and that's a few years ago now.. :)
We are now two families who enjoy the water together. We sail Leola mainly on the river now but she's been out to sea a few times with us. My father in law has a boat at Newlyn, Cornwall so we get to do sea fishing from her. Just love it. Cheers, Lesley
Rob you have to come and have a look at Felixstowe, it's so close! Really nice seafront with a little pier, beachhuts and gardens. There's an amazing old Fort at one end near the docks which I think would interest you - Landguard. Plus all this boaty loveliness at the other end. Cheers, Lesley
Yes, it's aniuce place no doubt.. My parents in law have gone a few times, and really like it.. It shouldn't been to hard to get to! I haven't even made the Redoubt in Harwich yet.. but the Landguard is definetely on the list of things to see.. :)
Oh I'm so glad you got to see the boat. Felixstowe Ferry is well worth a stop next time you visit. I'd recommend the Ferry cafe for a fresh fish meal and you can even buy fresh fish from the boatsheds. Then there's all the boats to look at. A Martello tower and crabbing off the dock. Cheers, Lesley
Hey Betty it's so good you could join us for the last sail of the season. I saw from a comment on another vid, that you're busy doing grown up stuff so I haven't pestered you about your absence. I'm out of practice with the lingo, sheets are ropes not things for the bed! Cheers, Lesley
I loved the last sail, Lesley! I never spent any time on the water to speak of, so it was a joy, and nice to see your family as well. Grown up stuff: I'm still at it for the moment. My brain wants to be here but must also be partially there. I need a bigger brain - ha!
Well if you find somewhere they're handing out bigger brains can you ask them to put me one aside. It's so hard being a grown up sometimes. But all the fun stuff is still here when you have the time. L x
Your children are precious! (and seem so proper!). Sigh..this makes me miss sailing, as our season ended about a month ago. Your boat is bigger than the one we use..but i'd say ours is around 40 years old. That's what I love about sail boats...there's a real reverence for the older models. :)
Gary, thank you from the bottom of my heart, this comment means the world to me. Leola is about 23 feet long and she's an all wood boat with a keel. But for a 73 year old lady when the wind is there, she's very sprightly and handles beautifully. I take it as a compliment that my children seem proper! Cheers, Lesley
Thanks! I'm such a fair weather sailor. My brother and mother are sailors, and I often go, but usually when there's no wind in the forecast! I love it but get terrified when there's big windstorms or blizzards...stuff my brother loves!
If my dad has to be tied onto the boat that's when he loves it the most. I found it exhilarating when the boat was so far over water was coming in but not with kids. I was happy Hannah's 1st sail had no wind! No sailing in blizzards wasn't even a rule I thought I needed to make, but it's now on my list thanks. Cheers, Lesley
He sails on Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. It's so beautiful there! There's snow on top of the Tetons this morning and frost on my windshield! I'm pretty sure his sailboats are still on their moorings! Your boat is gorgeous!
This is my fave bit about YouTube, I just went up and told my hubby about your comment and he was wondering where you sailed. Here you are before I even ask. So great that the distance between us is reduced and we can share something like this that we have in common. Thanks. L
Lesley that was a very exciting video! At first, I was afraid you were calling that tiny boat The Leola. LOL I was quite relieved to see the large sail boat. Thanks so much for taking us along on the adventure. The scenery was quite beautiful also. -Jim
Thank you very much Jim. I had no idea if I could get anything useful with my ordinary digital camera as it only films for 3 mins at a time. It was a beautiful day, the river is lovely and all the people out on their boats were so friendly. Cheers Lesley
Did reply - my comment got eaten? Joe and I both sailed before we met so yup it's in the genes, she loved it. She's been on the boat out of the water while we worked on her, old boats = lots of TLC and money! My dad was so thrilled with Joe as a suitor because of this boat - it was even in his wedding speech. Cheers, Lesley
You have to have fish and chips at the Ferry Cafe it's wonderful, you can't get fresher. There's always something interesting going on in the boatyard and fresh fish for sale. It really is a super place to have a mooring. Cheers, Lesley
Hey there Jim, I know how important your family is to you. It's brilliant when you get to share things you enjoy with your kids. For you it's music for me sailing. Cheers, Lesley
