  • For a review of VB, I think your analysis borrows far too much from the language of reference and has a number of inaccuracies. For example, Skinner did not say that our behavior was dependent on "expectations." That would be akin to some sort of inner agent controlling behavior. You repeated this error when referencing "intentions" of the speaker as the purpose of Skinner's work on VB. Actually, the purpose of the book was to provide a functional account of VB. Saying, "Water" because...

  • one is thirsty, sees water, reads text with the letters "water," hears, "what covers 2/3 the surface of the Earth," hears, "Water," are all different functions of language. Skinner simply pointed out the various functions and named them.
