Wow the lead player chet ferretti, he sounds modern, he was one of the early lead versions of the lead player we know today in big bands, The fast vibrato and shakes and things like that, in Lin Biviano's playing Chet's influence is very evident . Not saying he started that style or anything like that, I was not alive then, but I have heard from people who were, he is one of my favorite lead players of all time, and wow, this is when Maynard could do anything on that trumpet, he is just amazing.
Maiden at his best. Sax section is Willie Maiden, Joe Farrell, Lanny Morgan and the incredible Frank Hittner on Baritone Sax. Hittner always played solos that erupted with fire. His sound was the anchor of the ensemble sections.
It's a shame we have to go this far back to hear great music. Have you heard what's passing for music now? Turn on the TV or radio and hear what's passing for music.
Wow , this tells it all. Lokk at Ruffis Jones on Drums, and Willie looks like the original COOL CAT SAX PLAYER, Maynard range ,up and Down, side to side ,and that great Vibato...this IS MF HORN...this kids today sould view this and see the complete MF... not go up to hit a double High C.....
Wow the old "NEWPORT CREW" we get to see in this vedio what we heard for all of years listening to thoses songs. Ruffis Jones on drums, and Willie who looks like the original cool Cat
Wonderful post! I recall this 60's band. I recognize Lanny Morgan and Willie Maiden in the reed section. Hearing this band close up was an unforgetable experience.

The alto player is Lanny Morgan. Jimmy Ford had left the band prior to his appearance at Newport. He does play the alto solo on the recorded version.

The trumpets at that time were Chet (Augie) Ferretti, Rick Kieffer, and Jerry Tyree.

Thanks for posting! Maynard is absolutely burning on this one! I love the way he started on baritone on this tune.
