My basset came from a breeder, and while I was in middle school and didn't fully understand what a puppy mill was (even though it was a smaller one that I visited), I do now, and I hope most people understand that dogs are more than just machines (if you don't support mills, then you shouldn't support factory farms either!). There are TONS of rescues for EVERY breed.Shelters are always overflowing.

some of the bassets in this vid are PREGO hence the thickness, lol, i have had a few bassets and they all get thicker with age, for the first 2 yrs, they grow long and taller, then they get more wrinkles and cuter lol, with pillowey goodness

They have back and hip problems because of their long backs as they get older, not because of their weight. My basset is in his ideal weight bracket and he hasn't any back or hip problems yet.

Genetics! I have no idea why someone would assume that obesity would be the root of this breeds weakness. Any vet. can tell you that this is a genetic issue and can affect a dog of ideal weight. My male weighs 50 lbs and is muscle and has been checked by 2 vets regularly due to his back and hip problems that developed by age 1 and he is now 4.

Bassets are not supposed to be yappers ,have no idea what your situation is or your neighbors....but this sounds highly unusual...

Are you someone who is just sensitive to noise and can't stand children or animals sounds?

I don't have enough information to reply.

But having groomed ,trained & rescued dogs for many years I can with a cetainty say bassets usually are not yappy.

my neighbors have 3 bassetts and they are the worst neighbors that have the worst pets possible for a neighborhood with close houses, have any of you bassett owners trained your dog not to bark? is it even possible?

Our basset howls very rarely. Only if people are yelling around him or if a stranger is nearby. To be honest, he probably only howls once a month if that. Maybe your neighbors are loud and get their dogs riled up a lot?

Sorry, but several of them are severely overweight, which will signifigantly affect their health and the amount of time they will be alive for their owners to enjoy them and vice versa. It may be hard to deny them food considering their love affair with it, but in the end both the dog and the owner will lose out.

This is a puppy. You have put your hands on them to determine whether puppies of this breed are overweight. They have so much skin.

Bassets usually aren't overweight. You have them mixed up with Dachshunds, which really do have tendancy to put on the pounds. Bassets don't have back problems like Doxies do.
