  • That first routine was magic. I've never seen anything so beautiful on beam.

  • I had never seen that first clip. She was amazing! Loved that routine. Yang Bo truly was queen of the beam. Loved that routine.

  • omg you have excellent choices!! I've never seen those routines!!! :D

  • Oh my gosh ! The 1st girl is THE shit !

  • Brilliant clip. I hadn't seen 4 out of 5 of those routines so thanks for uploading :)

Lol I just spent 8 minutes with my jaw totally dropped... Freaking amazing.

  • I LOVE the first girls low hand work

  • --> 0:56. Holy Flexible

  • wow!!!!

  • I still think Mostepanova's is still one of the best routine i have ever seen

  • gymnastics during the hardcore communist era was just pure magic.. todays standard although higher.. has somewhat lost its charm..

  • @mostepanovafan i love all your videos, bud! exposed me to a lot of gymnastics i didn't know about. you must like the full twisting layout on beam, because you chose two routines with that. i love doudniks beam - she's AMAZING. and i tend to cringe on yang bo's full twisting swing down. AWESOME. what're your thoughts on moceanus 1996 team optional? or oksana omelianchik's 1985 euro beam routine. personal favs. i'm not ragging on you for not including them tho. to each his own. :c)

  • The first one is soooo prettyy

  • Grozdova's routine is a masterpiece

    mindblowing

  • Wow is right! Those were totally AMAAAAAAAAZINGGGG!!! Thanks for sharing this video!

  • Wow!

  • its funny how the balance beam (i think) in Kui Yuanyuan's routine is made by samsung.

  • Wow... Look at those sticks...All skills stuck. Is that possible???

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!

    Great choices!:)

It's just that I don't think that number 2's 3 leap row would have counted... I hope it did but it wasn't quite split. That might have been acceptable then. But she is an amazing gymnast with a gorgeous routine (well they all are:))

  • The 2:26 move was named after her.. when you change the opposite direction of a back hamstring..

  • Wow, these are incredible! Inspiring! Thanks!

  • GREAT GREAT GREAT choices! No argument there!

  • The number 1 is amazing

  • I just loooove your selections because they are all breath taking!

  • Anyone else start singing "Hello my baby hello my honey hello my ragtime galllllllll" during the first routine?

  • the first routine has much more grace than we know nowadays!!

  • I think gymnastics would be fun, but I'm a 6 foot 3 male.

  • @KneezBees You could still do it! Its never to late to start! You may not go to the olympics but you can still have fun.

  • I think that Catalina Ponor deserved a place here with her routine from the 2004 Olympics...

But i like your video...especialy the last gymnast...

  • why is it call "onodi" instead of "mostepanova"??

  • Wow, Yang Bo's routine was stunning!

  • Love Olessia Dudnik's routine. Amazing full and spectacular dismount.

  • Does anybody else think that the move starting about 1:45 or 1:47 is completely amazing? I've never seen that before or since. It looks really difficult. And painful.

  • @kayper54 Yes! I was thinking the same thing! I just tried that and completely failed. How'd she get so on her toes and balanced with the other foot kicking forward? I'd make that like a D in the CoP, haha!

  • I like Yang Bo's balance routine. I admire your list.

  • Kui is amazing-full twist! I heard Shawn Johnson is training one for 2012!

  • Mostepanova's routine looks the most like modern routines. Nastia also has the same mount as her, that press to split.

  • Olessia Dudnik was the best of those five gymnasts.

  • great video! I had never seen the first or third ones... really amazing stuff! Thanks for making it! xoStephy :P

  • damn svetlana, i mean wow! very nice!

  • Oh Kui, you should have WON that world championship! Gogean is vile!

  • Are gymnasts not allowed to do twisting elements on the beam any more. .... you never really see them ?

  • I'm not an expert but for me Grodzova's was the best. So artistic. But I loved the last one too, Yang Bo...That was perfection...

  • What does "the first girl to work across the four inch width of the beam" mean?

  • what happened to Dudnik....I remember her bursting onto the scene in 89, but can't remember anything from her after that

  • @demc67 She retired with a knee injury after the 1990 french international and she lost her parents after the chernobyl nuclear disaster. Now she lives with her son in Cairo, Egypt and coaches gymnastics at the Al Gezeera Sporting Club. She also lost her husband in 2004.

  • @liukin95 unfornate muchh,, i feel sorry for her,, :(

  • full twist on beam???? Kui was a superhuman!

  • Now I get why you call yourself MostepanovaFan- she was awesome :)

  • while dudnik had great acrobatics her artistry is just not up to par with the others in this video. I wouldn't have ranked her ahead of Qui. She can't even do a full split leap.

  • old routines were MUCH more artistic....but i still enjoy the new gymnastics we have now. that last routine from the china cup was FREAKY!....freaky amazing!

  • Beam just isn't what it used to be. These were amazing.

  • gymnastics just isn't celebrated anymore for it's artistry and beauty :(

  • OMG I loved yang bo.

  • Excellent choice of favourite routines, couldn't have picked a better set.

  • just beautiful

  • 1st one - BRILLIANT!

    2nd one - LOVE IT!

    3rd one - Amazing!

    4th one - Perfect!

    5th one - THE BEST!

omgshh all of them were amazing! my fav starts are the one with the vaults and somersaults and twists in the air gymnasts back them were more thinner and therefore more flexible so its usually more beautiful, nowadays its all about power and lots of gymnasts hav loads of muscle!! thats why i love nastia liukin :)

  • I've seen college gymnast have better routines that was a bad choice of routines

  • @TheWatakick Really? Like who? Show us!

  • The cameraman who zoomed in on #2's groin was placed on the registered sex offenders list.

  • the last one had a huge weggie lol

  • Do you happen to know how much the last gymnast received for her routine? It was absolutely stunning! She was so nimble and solid in her movements - not a wobble to be seen. :O

  • so sad that mostapanova never got to compete in the olympics cause of that stupid boycott!

  • hey mostepanova, what do you thingk about Tatiana Groshkova's routine....so renovating ;)

    grtz

  • The quality of Grozdova's video makes her look like she's glowing...and the routine itself was otherworldly! Except for maybe that little tuck stand kick deal...which makes more sense if you've been exposed to Russian fok dance...

  • Watching these gymnastics makes my sport (synchronized swimmimg) feel easy :( . . .

  • It always flabbergasts me watching such amazing gymnasts. It interesting how, like Olessia, her saltos on beam are flawless and yet with a simple tuck jump or full turn, she wobbles.

  • wow! the last one...WOW!!!

watch our first 2 vids :) i know they are in bad quality :(

  • Now I understand why you're called "mostepanova fan". Mostepanova is awesome!

  • Kui Yuanyuan was so happy when she finished her routine...

She didn't know then she was about to be robbed BIG TIME.

  • Doudnik's full twist is just mind-blowingly awesome.

  • I love all of these routines. All of these gymnasts were so incredible and they made it all look so effortless. Great video.

  • What I miss about Soviet gymnastics is how balletic they were. People are so focused on 'power' now that there's no beauty in what they do.

  • @SonyaNatalia i was going to say the same thing.artistic gymnastics isnt very artistic anymore.its just about power not so much as grace.everything used to be so graceful, now people forgot about the grace that used to be gymastics.grace is what this sport i suposed to be known for not so much as power.

  • Their routines are amazing, I could never do that but they all look ten years old, and the second chick looked five! I know that they have be small to do the routines well but I just can't beleive how tiny they are. I wish I could do this but their size puts into perspective that I would never be able to (I'm 5'8" and still growing)

  • @mitsuchan325 What an ignorant, rude thing to say. I understand what you probably meant, but referring to people as children and chicks because they're short or not white is annoying as hell. It reminds me of that commenter who once referred to Bai Chunyue as an 'it'.

  • @happyjellyfish Are you kidding? Someone called her an it??? That's horrible. I know she was tiny but her gymnastics was beautiful when she hit.

  • AWESOME

  • omg these routines are soooooo cool!!They are so interesting to watch!!!!!!!

  • Dudnik's routine to this day is insane. The fact that she made it look so easy baffles my mind.

  • From my point of view, Dudnik's beam is the best and the most difficult exercice I've ever seen.

  • Nastia is the best

  • what would Olessia's start value be in the code of 2007?

  • and i thoght mackenzie caquato was very origional she does the same thing at 4:48- 4:52

  • # 2 was my fave :)

  • hi Mostepanovafan, since you listed out other favourites who didnt make the top 5 list of your ub and fx favourite lists, i wonder if you have other favourites who didnt quite make it to your top 5 of balance beam list?

  • every young gymnast should be shown that tape of Dudnik. amazing.

  • I love the Gogean haters, they make me smile like a clown, especially when I go look at footage with the medal around her neck. Kthx

  • if you like kui's routine in 1997, look at her optional routine in atlanta, it is even better!

  • Svetlana Grozdova is fantastic........

  • older gymnastics was so much more graceful and beautiful to watch, these days, the girls only focus on who has the hardest moves and end up being rigid and not having fun!

  • These are absolutely amazing beam routines!!

  • i wonder why you really love gymnastics in the 80s...

  • if only yang bo had stuck all her dismounts like that, favorite beam worker ever

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the gymnastics officials apologized for underscoring Kui Yuanyuan's routine that year?...If not, I don't know what they're waiting for...that's one of the reasons the new Code of Points was created...to avoid those types of "mistakes"...(clearly Gogean didn't deserve first...maybe she didn't even deserve to be in the top 3)...

  • @edelamm gogean shouldn't have even been in the finals at 97 worlds nor at the 96 olympics...a routine like that, whether it's hit perfectly, wins a medal especially a gold is such a gift from the judges

  • My favorite us the third!

  • Wow amazing choices. Those are incredible, it's nice to see some routines from the past.

  • i loved grosdovas routine it was so artistic...i think the music really helped to enhance it and i loved the pirouettes she did on her hands around 40 secs

  • very cool! thanks for sharing!

  • your number four is my new favorite number one :D

  • in the first routine, WOW!! her pirouotte was amazing!!!!!!!!

  • Yang Bo is my fave too! <3

  • Only time I've ever seen Bo stick a dismount.

  • @Tribute2the80s she stuck her dismount in mostly AA competitions (89, 90 Worlds), but never in event finals.

  • is the beam shorter than wat they are now??

  • I feel like gymnast back in the day had more style in their performances.

  • 1 and 3 were realy epic

  • the kui girl is awesome!!!! #3

  • Old gymnastics was more artistic than the one we have today :(

  • @Natalie9911 Yeah, they put a bigger emphasis on technical skills today.

  • @Natalie9911 yeah do now it's nothing....

  • # 2 and 1 were excellent routines! The chinese girl did a wonderful landing. I also thought that her flexibility was amazing! I am really happy with your choices!

  • the first and the last routine were just amazing!

  • Dudnik's routine is phenomenal!!

  • i think #5 could have had a side career as a contortionist! Amazing! Gymnastics now a days just isnt as fluid as these women! Thanks for posting!

  • the last two was really perfect

    i love it¨¨

  • Thank you for posting these videos!

  • the chinese girl did the best back with a full i have ever seen

  • wow.... those last two were amazing. REALLY amazing.

  • that's was crazy! I love Yang Bo's back spring back spring layout into the full twisting back spring!!! Great choices those were all fantastic!!!!

  • yang bo does a gorg beam routine! its exqusitie!

  • Olesya's aerial to double whipback stepouts is my favorite beam pass ever. hands down.

  • has anyone noticed that the way gymnastics is performed has changed over the course of only 20 years. The difference between the 1983 routine and the 1997 routine is so different. In 1983 the routine was more graceful and flowing and the other one is quicker and more jerkey movment. I like the way gymnastics used to be. More like dancing.

  • veryy good choicess ! :)

  • so mostepanova did the onodi before onodi?!??! hot!!!

  • onodi did it standing, mostepanova connected it with another move

  • so connected is it called a different name than onodi?

  • i dont know, but in a standing position its an onodi but connected i have no idea

  • Comment removed

  • No. The skill should be named after Mostepanova, but due to paperwork issues it never happened. It got named after Onodi instead.

  • doesnt mean that they r the best. besides, its her opinion, and shes probobly more knowing about gymnastics than u. i dont know any die hard gymnastics fans that would think they r the best either...

but, i guess ur entitled to ur opinion too, just try not to dis others

  • nastia liukin does a standing full? never heard of that, sorry!

btw, good choice dude, this is very much the same to my list!

  • They all brilliant, are't they??

But I am telling you a truth, neither Kui Yuanyuan nor Yang Bo have won any World Champion on beam. Can you just believe that, How rediculis it is.

Yang Bo was mess up on dismount in 1991, and Kui Yuan yuan was shamely robbed in 1997 as we all know.

  • The same with Li Shanshan! The best beam workers can never seem to grab the titles!

These are incredible routines, great choices.

  • omg Amazing... all of them.

  • This is great! I didn't even know the first 3 athletes- thanks for that introduction!!!

  • i love all your choices!

  • Why wasn't Grosdova in beam finals at the 1976 Olympics? She was AWESOME for her day! I love all of these routines-all are my favorites as well. Amongst the greatest beamers of all time.

  • She fell off in team optionals so she didn't qualify :(

  • Darn! :(

  • Oh my gosh I had never seen number 2 before. Brilliant.

  • and 4:23??? Damn!

  • i liiike this video [:

im glad u relied to my other video so that i could watch all of urs.

    i needed new material ;D

  • oh my god! What the hell was that at 4:09???? WOW

  • The last skill of the series was a back layout with a full twist--pretty much the hardest single beam element.

  • thank you for doing this. I love Olesia dudnik speciallu her move on 5.33

  • crazyyyyyyyy

  • i love the fact that you chose a lot of routines that wouldn't be considered cliche. awesome variety like the elements in the routines you chose. i also love how you chose yang bo. the best form out of any gymnast ever on beam, unfortunately she never really got it together at the really big championships like worlds and olympics.

  • WOW!WOW! im level 8 guy gymnast. but that was truly amazing! I wish they did that kinda difficult stuff now!not saying the routines arent hard at all.. but you knw what I mean! the 1st routine. was ok. but from the 4th down to the 1st routines were jst AMAZING!! thnx soo so much4 posting this vid! and almost all your others!! thnx and byebye! :)

  • awesome choices!!! thanks for posting!

  • Omg this is what they call: Originality!

And they're all soo gracefull. (S.Johnson should take an example from this..) haha

I totally agree with you on the first one.

She truly is the queen of grace on beam!!

  • Im agree with you. shawn is my favorite gymnast but she should take them as an example in the artistic.

  • OMG totally agree with your first choice it was so beautifull to watch but still really exciting! Its only since the last olympics that ive really got into gymnastics and so ive mostly only seen the modern gymnasts, but i love watching all these old ones on youtube, there so beautifull! I just dont understand why they cant still do ruitines like these today, but throw in some hrdr tumbles instead! Does any 1 no what sort of A scores these ruitines would get now?

Gd job! I love all your videos!

  • Did Dudnik did the same layout full twist like kui yuanyuan? Sorry my eyes is really not good T__T

  • How come Olga Mostepanove performed the Onodi first but it's not named after her? She still did it at a World Championships.

  • That is a frequently asked question. Moste did not ask the FIG (Federation Internationale de Gymnastique) to name it after her in their Code of Points, and so they did not do so. Onodi did.

  • I've always wondered about this! Thank you for the info :)

  • wow u do a fabulous job on these videos.and i agree with moosies66 because gymnastics was so pretty and now the judges like to see stiff little robots. thats why i like nastia.

  • The older routines had more grace and talent to them. Now days they just have leap, jump, a couple skills, and dismounts.

  • yup these are definately my fave 5 beam routines too! u have great taste! love it!

  • thank you

  • i come from hong kong, my favourite of top 5 balance beam player is.

    1st -- li li

    2nd -- tatiana lysenko

    3rd -- shannon miller

4th -- yang bo or kui yuan yuan

    5th -- betty okino.

  • Were the any time limit for the balance beam routine because the first one was two minutes long

  • The first one was a display, a show.

  • The older routines are so beautifull, they were more like dances than skills chucked in with random disjointed dance. Also Gymnasts used to have much better lines, not in all cases but in generall more emphasis was put in the beauty of lines and pointed toes, now its more about power and really hard tricks.

  • GREAT choices!

  • oh and i think olessia had the greatest beam routine i never had seen before that routine

  • yes i think olesya was the best beam worker of all time

  • why the move at 2:26 calls onodi if mostepanova did it first?

  • they don't make gymnasts like kui yuanyuan anymore...

  • Are there any routines that you like which are more "contemporary"??

  • OMG the lady announcer Right at the end! Now we can't say Paris Hilton invented saying "Thats Hot..." i'm so happy!
