  • This still gives me goosebumps after all these years x

  • One word, Three syllables: A-MAZ-ING

  • Genialni sa powinni występować na rozpoczęciu mistrzostw!!!!!

  • The best part is between 3'33 and 4'52

  • I was 13 and I think I watched this Eurovision Song Contest with my Granny... It was (and is!!!) amazing!

  • @prinzessin71 i was way older but i was with my beloved husband and it was an absolute beautiful moment it did gave us goose bumps it was fabulous

  • I love irish music and dance!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I know that it was subsequently flogged to death ad nauseam, but the impact of this show was electrifying! Michael Flatley and Jean Butler had such charisma. Easily the greatest interval performance and maybe the greatest ever Eurovision performance of all time?

  • This is the dictionary definition of a tour de force.

  • i came home from a long shift, had a curry and beers ready to watch the results of eurovision, when this gaellic music came on and i thought here we go the enya late late show so i flicked over to watch something, luckily i flicked back just in time.I can imagine everyone watching stood up to applause as the audience did.

  • Not bad for a couple of Yanks.

  • @griftywelder I'm just trying to understand what you mean by a couple of Yanks?? I think you may need to do some researh before you make a comment like that!

  • Michael Flatley from 3.35 to 4.53,everytime...just....Holy sh*t!!

  • if this was there so to say world expose.... where did they performe before this... who was there audince before eurovison?

  • only the irish could do this .god bless you all

  • @slowjoe1949 Well, apart from Michael Flatley and Jean Butler. They're both Yanks.

  • @rattledsoulcage The choral group who performed this song is called Anuna, and the score was written by Bill Whelan. Beautiful, isn't it?

  • You can sort of see that Michael Flatley's ego hasn't quite kicked in yet, so he just seems to be enjoying the performance, rather than basking in it. Simply amazing.

  • On yersel, the Irish. Best wishes, the Scots.

  • @killie84 Wee Irish best wishes to you to.

  • Riverdance becomes a worldwide phenomenon @ 4:52

  • 3:59 His legs flail about as if independent from his body.

  • Обалдеть!!! The best!!!

  • who is the female singer who opens this performance? She gives me chills to the bone. Would love to find out her name to look up more music by her.

  • Gives me chills every time

  • i would guess michael tapped her a few times

  • Respond to this video... we did introduce enya to the world though. so i am sorry

  • @shanekeane200123456 english steal beating the drum on the 1968 world cup

  • Genius!!!!!

  • Brings a tear to me eye so it does.

  • I remember watching this in my living room when I was living in London. Now I wasn't an avid Eurovision fan but decided to watch it as it was coming from Ireland. Well my jaw dropped, I was dumbfounded, it was so amazing and to this day everytime I watch it the hairs stand up on the back of my head. This is what we are capeable of doing in Ireland so plenty of hope for the future in these tough times.

  • No country has ever beaten the riverdance at the Eurovision half time performance

  • This is still brilliant :-)

  • I am 1000% Proud To be Irish <3

  • EPIC WIN

  • I'd forgotton how amazing this performance was! I remember watching it at the time and being taken so totally and absolutely by suprise. It was one of the best live performances ever seen, and changed the perception of Irish dance forever I think. Stunning!

  • Makes me so proud to be irish

  • I'd always been fascinated by Irish dancing but always the ladies wore long emerald-green dresses. I remember how both myself and the audience were totally blown away by this fantastic & sexy presentation.

  • Forgive me, I did a mistake previously about nicknames, ... Sorry.

  • @shanekeane : Well, I'm French and I must admit that, alas, shanekeane is perfectly right is his judgement ! ... Irish people and Irish traditionnal arts are authentically great, that's it ! ...

  • Well, I'm French and I must admit that, alas, lilou 1003 is perfectly right is his judgement ! ... Irish people and Irish traditionnal arts are authentically great, that's it ! ...

  • Makes me proud to be irish

  • @shanekeane200123456 Im not French.....Are you English?

  • I remember seeing this in 1994. Eurovision interval acts are usually pretty crass, but this one overshadowed everything else in that years show, and showed that in spite of all the criticism, Eurovision has launched a lot of very good things over the years.

  • and with dat, condemned an entire generation of irish children to irish dancing classes

  • @mrtsimon You must excuse me, Niamh Kavanagh wom the 1993 contest. Eurovision 1994 was won by Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan with "Rock'n'Roll Kids"...

  • @FrancoFile7 Yes, but I think that more people still remember the interval-act, and not who won ;)

  • @mrtsimon Actually it wasn't an entry in the contest, it was the interval act, which was performed while the results were being counted I believe. Though, if my memory serves me correctly, Ireland did win that year, with Niamh Kavanagh and the song "In Your Eyes"... Y señor, ya que hablamos de Eurovisón, hay que España envie Luz Casal a este concurso. ¡Con su voz extraordinaria, ella ganaría sin duda!

  • Awesome! What position did they manage? I'm spanish

  • fancy im irish, gealic, fenian etc lol, n yes, it makes me emotional

  • We won the Eurovision that year too after having won it in 1992 and 1993.Norway won it in 1995 and we won it again in 1996!

Ten years later we had Dustin the Turkey...

  • i was 10 the first time seen this on the eurovision and 17 years later it still gives me goosebumps!

  • I always watch this when I need a lift. The emotion is due to the combination of rhythm, music and movement done to perfection. There is nothing better

  • Amazing! Lovely!

  • I love how the applause at the end reflects just how blown away the audience was having just witnessed this performance.

  • @manorrd I can still remember when I saw this as a kid (no, not this performance, but a performance of a Riverdance troup in general) on tv, and was hooked immediately.

  • @manorrd You're so right, I get almost, almost, more goosebumps from the applause at the end than I get from the amazing performance... almost :]

  • this makes me proud to be irish!! :D

  • I kinda wished I'd never seen it so I get the maximum impact the next time I watch it. I've seen it so many times now I've started giving the backing dancers names.

  • @robbiekeane18 it's good that you are having a relaxing hobby :-))

  • @SimsMoyal Haha I think you mean obsession although for the first time I watched it today and didn't get goosebumps :( Gonna have to leave it for a while I guess

  • The best Eurovision interval ever! Bring back the Celtic Tiger.God bless The Irish.

  • That is pure Irish talen. Omg there has never been another eurovison to match ever.

    God bless the Irish

  • hahahahahaahahahahha

  • R.i.p gerry ryan(male host of show)

  • this is why i am proud to be irish and i am proud to able to do dancing like that

  • *goosebumps induced by talent*

"oh, we're just gonna have about 26 dancers on stage doing synchronized foot movements, piece of cake"

  • foot work at its finest!

  • Nothing will ever beat this interval act!!!!!!! This would cheer up the most depressed person in the world. Love it and always will, and it really makes me proud to be Irish!!!

  • Cryin my eyes out!

  • Ha ha nice one dawnmanjam

  • That's it I'm ridin to Brussels right now on me pyeball war paint on me face sword in hand and I'm takin over the EU and that's that!

  • Fantastic. I remember watching at the time and being blown away. Initially I was just ogling a gorgeous, willowy redhead, but by the end of it I was nearly in tears. The roar at the end gets me every time.

As someone who's learning German the clip was doubly rewarding! The commentator describes the piece as "a fantastic ten minutes". I also didn't know that the Hun had adopted our phrase "standing ovation." There you go.

Bugger. I'm going to watch it again.

  • i love the way when they introduce it at the start the audience claps lightly, no1 was expecting such an amazing performance, its a pity the world wants cocky, tacky people to make money rather than just stick to pure talent... if we can come come up with an amazingly performed dance like river dance im sure if we actually sat down and put alot of effort into it the irish could come out with something to competely shock the world, but they went with jedward another poplularity stunt! no effort

  • Makes me proud to b Irish!

  • 2 people dont know how to tap! and michael flatley is irish! hes from cork!

  • The only interval in my life that I actually enjoyed.

  • I'm willing to bet we're all watching this because we miss when Eurovision was about real talent and national pride. That, and we are all damn proud to be Irish.

  • When Irish dancing was classy.

  • I'm willing to bet that this is the greatest show put on in Eurovision history, and its something we should always be proud of.

  • I got goosebumps all the way through but got the most during the singing and when Jean was dancing on her own. Brings back so many memories. No one will ever out do Michael Flatley.

  • Damn, so cool, I was born in 1994, and I remember when I was in my moms belly and watched this ! emotional!! :p

  • @hulkhogantupaclover

    ur a spa

  • @nanabigd06 what is a spa? hmm

  • @hulkhogantupaclover

  • @hulkhogantupaclover Spa is short for spastic as in retard :)

  • @RaeRae914 aah cool! thank u dude!! ;-)

  • I am Glad we have no money,we Irish need to get back to what were truely about, music, culture a love for one another and our traditions and to hell with everything and everybody else......

  • This is one of the many moments that makes me proud to be Irish! Our country may be in a very bad place at the moment but with talent like this we still have aloud to be proud and thankful for!:)Im only 21 so I wasn lucky enough to be around to see this live it would have been amazing but still gives me shivers just watching it!:)If Jedward win for us this year it would be brill to have something like this again!:)

  • That just totally lifted my spirits looking at that.Recession my back, look what we can do when we try!

  • my feet started to move and I just couldn't stop!

  • Had this of been an entry for eurovision for Ireland this year. It would be a win XD

  • @WalkingLights don't worry, we have jedward! of course we're going to win...

  • @LouiseLollipop ........yes.......win ono;;

  • Michael Flatley is some man.

  • wish i could say I'm proud over being irish. But i'm not from there >.<

  • @RememberRox we'll adopt you!! ;-)

  • if Eurovision included dancing, this would probably be the greatest winner of Eurovision of all time.

  • Goosebumps.....

  • Can't beat us carrot crunchers!

  • 2 people are English..

  • @MCluvs2laugh Rubbish, what an awful thing to say, I'm English and Irish, I love my country (England), but that does not mean my country hates music of anothers, what an awful thing to say.

  • @TheGhostSmyth Christ sake calm down! I always thought the English were dry but seriously? We're always getting the pissed riped out of us by you(the English). Learn to take a joke and grow up. ''What an awful thing to say'' my arse, the IRA today threatened the Queen..THATS ''an awful thing to say''

  • @MCluvs2laugh Why the hell not, Im always slapped as an arsehole beause Im an English and the fact im half irish means Im not a complete arsehole, you say your always getting the piss ripped out of you, go to America, your more loved than the french!

  • @TheGhostSmyth I said you were dry not an ''arsehole''. I've been to America, I was informed of the fact we drink alot and apparently have leprechauns. Perhaps harmless banter, but at 15 years old i found it offensive! GhostSmyth I've nothing against the English infact i was rooting for England in the world cup and cant wait to see the Royal Wedding on Friday so hey, lets just enjoy the video, eh?! :P

  • @MCluvs2laugh Maybe your right and i might be overreacting, meh, okey doke, I apologise for getting the wrong end of the stick.

  • @TheGhostSmyth No I think I was infact wrong in saying ''2 people are English'', maybe the current fued on Facebook between the Irish and English urged me bring it to Youtube! Wow i must say this was fun, and actually kinda funny, people must think reading these I'm one verbose 17 year old! Up the Irish, and the English..!;)

  • the most memorable television debut of all time SURELY?

  • Fucking awesome, i have no other words. Sorry.

  • This is not good because two people can do an annoyingly complex routine. It's good because twenty people can do a not-so-annoying-yet-still-fairly-complex routine, in perfect syncopation, complete with music. I love the Irish.

  • Vote for ireland in Eurovision 2011 and you can be sure we will give you another amazing show... As per usuall!!!

  • Is this music avalible on itunes? I want it! Its beautiful and makes me proud to be Irish!

  • @trikkinikki360 Hi, the easy answer is yes, two ways, one YouTube will not allow, so look for Bill Whelan : Riverdance : Music From The Show ; tracks Caracena & Riverdance [Full Version]

  • Just breathtaking!!!!Wow the stage is incredible also!

  • I watched this at the time in 1994 and it was sensational! It was no wonder the audience erupted in applause at such a sensational performance. Ireland also introduced the world to the Hot House Flowers during the interval another year it hosted Eurovision - talent, talent, talent!

  • What the hell do i watch next?? . . . . nothing beats that!

  • Certified and approved goosebumps material

  • For some reason I'm tempted to put a rap song in the background...

  • This is amazing, simply amazing!!!!

  • ah,its great to be irish.

  • It must have been an incredible adrenaline rush, getting a standing ovation in front of an entire continent

  • Riverdance is amazing! I think i've nearly cried twice watching this!

  • Theres something about this performance, the atmosphere at the beginning. Not to mention THAT SOUND those metal plates striking off the ground is like an instrument itself and the unison of the whole troop at the end, it is immense

  • More then 15 years later and it's still.....just amazing.

  • @xxxKATE2293xxx Eh... No Eurovision interval act surpassed it since...

  • Does anyone else get really emotional watching this? my eyes fill up!

  • @Xxfancythat79xX every time i watch it!

  • I get very emotional watching it!

  • @Xxfancythat79 VERY emotional watching this. Thanks for sharing. Tearing u[p while typing this :)

  • @Xxfancythat79xX OH MY GOD YES! Original Raw gorgeousness!

  • what song are they singing in the beginning?

  • @byebyebell1

The whole song is called "Riverdance" by Bill Whelan

  • no words

    wawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • What the hell happened to THIS Ireland. Irish people are extremely talanted, recession or no recession we have got to get BACK out there. Even Jedward bad as they are were created by an English show. What's going on? Why did the good times have to end when I'm ready to enjoy them.

  • @mcjmetroid Its sad innit. Think money made people forget about who they were.

  • @mcjmetroid I miss it so much. We had it all, only we didn't know it back then. This still gives me shivers and makes me miss the old Ireland so, so much.

  • @mcjmetroid Isn't Flatley American? Irish American maybe?

  • @mcjmetroid Bertie happened!

  • @mcjmetroid I think matey, even though its an English show, we are open to many! England is like a central hub of just lots of British shows, mainly because we are the biggest land mass (Could be wrong but hey).

I think your right in showing maybe identity of your country through talent, but it will happen, just when the time comes. What great English talent is really being reflected everywhere?

  • @mcjmetroid The eurovision is too expensive for the Irish to host therefore they enter shit people intentionally in order to lose. Winning the eurovision does not come before the welfare of your citizens I'm afraid lol

  • @mcjmetroid Irish people dont believe in themselves......It took an American to show them how great the Irish can be....sad

  • @lilou1003 Correction: it took an American to COMMERCIALIZE Irish dancing. People knew loooooong before him that the Irish are awesome. The Irish simply have an innate sense of humility and avoid talking up their talents as crassly as many cultures are encouraged to.

  • I bet they ruined that floor!

Its amazing how different the contest is now, I dont just mean the acts, but look how everyone in the audience was dressed tuxedo's, ball-gowns etc. where as now everyones in jeans, t-shirts n that.

  • Is that Nicole Kidman???

  • @maninthestreet01 The dancer? Its Jean Butler!

  • So nice to hear such positive, appreciative and complimentary comments on this video and Ireland's opening presentation of Eurovision 1994... God Bless you all!!

  • What's easy to forgot is how this performance was like a giant trigger being pulled on launching Ireland into a decent modern society. This threw off the shackles of Catholic guilt repression and heralded a new Ireland, confident, free, unabashed and proud. More's the pity then that we fucked it up after that then big time.

  • i like how at the start it just clapping. but when it finishes the whole place is clapping, cheering and a standing ovation. totally phenomanal.

  • absolutely adore riverdance. but how the heck do they stay in time? it all flawless. this was amazing!!! if i was doing this i would have fallen or tripped. no matter how much pratice i had.

  • Always will love this.

  • @DrTour1st you can buy it on iTunes :)

  • Jesus don't get too excited there Mary Robinson! Lol!

  • @babybobs6 Oh, is that Mary Robinson at 8:04? I thought that it was Olive, from On The Buses!

  • love this but sadly Gerry Ryan is no longer wit us. may he rest in peace now.

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN FIND JUST THE MUSIC?! I'VE BEEN CHASIN' IT FOR YEARS! PLEASE ANSWER ME!! :)

  • DrTour1st
