  • These folks are very lucky the moose was hungry, otherwise it may have charged their canoe and overturned it; they do it to cars-ram them and turn them over. Many people are killed every year from moose incidents, mostly in cars; I think they are best admired from a distance where you can see its environment too and not scare anybody. I've run into Moose in the BWCA and I just kept on walking; I will run a bear outta my camp, without a gun, however.

  • Wow, just look how close you are to that moose! Incredible!

  • I'm leaving for the bwca in a week. This will be my 5th trip. If you feel comfartable with the animal what's the deal we have had encounters like this a few times. You just don't want to be perceived as a threat. Great video. Remember this is a spirtual journey for some people you two seem to be doing just fine.

  • Nice vid but I once had a bull moose in the Tetons stand his ground against me in my SUV, I would have soiled myself in a canoe! :)

  • I'm going there foe the 1st time in 2 weeks. Hope to capture on film some wide animals doing some crazy tings.

  • You have got to experience something that I have always wanted to experience. Just seeing a Bull Moose up close, but in my opinion maybe too close. And to see him in his natural habitat. Feeding under water must have made you two giddy with excitment! I am jealous to say the least.

  • Fantastico!!!!!!!!!

  • was your lucy day.He didn,t care about you.

  • Lol t the mooses' first stare when he raises his head above the water. You're also ridiculously close to it.

  • I think you got too close to, but it's an amazing video. Well done :)

  • Excellent video! I was afraid to move while watching....way too close for this gal.

  • Good video and beautiful nature :)

  • Nice video but you got a little too close to that bull moose for safety..........yours and his. It's nice to enjoy nature but one should never approach ANY wild animal too closely and this was far too close.

You're looking at around 1000 lb's of moose as versus a canoe and two people. He could have jumped over and swamped your canoe and possibly killed one or both of the occupants faster than you could have dropped your camera and picked up your paddle.

Next time, give the animal room!

  • Amazing video!! Everytime I watch this I just want to jump in my car-forget everything and get back to nature "up north". I've been twice to the boundary waters and have yet to see a moose-I would have been stoked for weeks after an encounter like this. Goes to show how we are on the level with the rest of nature, not above it.

    Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Wow, I'm nervous just watching the video.

  • great video

  • That moose looks very skinny, visible ribs and all, hope it's not sick or anything. Still a great experience!

  • Nice vid! Experiencing a moose foraging up this close is a memory you'll never forget.

  • Definately a once-in-a-lifetime experience! I've taken hundreds of BWCA/Quetico trips over 26 years and have never come that close with a moose. Some years we haven't even seen one. Honestly though, you must realize that you were too close to him. If he'd charged you, the outcome could have been pretty bad! I'm glad it worked out for you!

  • Wow! I have yet to come that close to a moose up north, or bear either. I was on the trails last fall at sunset(which we have the most amazing sunsets here in MN!) and I saw about 15 deer ahead of me, it was so quiet and so "natural"-sounds corny but I felt one with them for a minute or two.

  • that is one healthy looking moose!

  • Beautiful!

  • GO MOOSE!!!!

  • Lucky! Relaxed Moose. Allways nice to be in close (and friendly) contact. But you never know.......

  • whoa. tht must have been a wonderfull experiance.

    once in a life time!

  • awesome .. you guys are so lucky....

  • Hahahah moose was like - oh hello there! :D

  • Nice video. They are an awesome animal

  • This is one of many reasons I love living in northeast MN :)

  • I hope to see one when I go there tommorow for the first time! Im really kinda nervous about going up but watching these videos its looks amazing!

  • what a sight!

  • I just got back from the bwca and seen a moose on wierd lake.

  • !!!WOW!!! what a nice movie:D

  • That had to be an experience of a life time.

  • Most epic thing ever to grace this earth.

  • where was this filmed??? please?

  • North end of Duncan Lake

  • @brianblow That's AWESOME! perfect for the video camera/camera, that had to have made your week.

  • Wow. That was close. Thank you for posting it. I hope to see one alive myself someday.

  • omg how can that guy be that close to a moose i have bad dreams about moosies!

  • i've been to the bwcaw several times and only seen one dead moose, i could'nt imagine being that close to a live one. you must have been scared!

  • that's a jackpot.

  • Great video. Love the moose.

  • Great video...but waaaaayyy too close, especially in a canoe...

  • Wicked video where was that???

  • North end of Duncan Lake in Minnesota BWCA.

  • Hi, I am just Curious what Lake you were in when you saw this? I live in MN and am always up in the BWCA. My uncle owns the portage on Loon Lake and we have seen many moose but never have been so close! I bet this was an experience you will never forget! It's s amazing what you see up there!

  • North end of Duncan Lake

  • I love moose! Ive seen 3 in Idaho, don't hunt or anything but are amazed at their size...I love em' big, "friendly looking (though I know there not) there's just something about them...like they are wise or they know they are badass haha!

  • Great Video and just imagine the feelings you have to be that close to a wild animal and still be able to witness them without disturbing them! GO MOOSE!!!

  • Not too smart, however!

  • Although, I must add, in Yellowstone I did once get "cornered" by a bison.

  • I have to admit that when I got this issue of the BWJ and saw the picture on the cover, I was a bit befuddled. It seemed to almost promote getting this close to one of these animals as being "okay" which is a very dangerous thing to do. Without judging you or labelling you as simply ignorant of the dangers I have to ask: How was it that you ended up being this close to this Bull? Did you somehow get stuck between it and the shore? Or was it done intentionally?

  • Fair question. This is ~30 min after the moose first saw us. We drifted downwind along the left shore in the video, and directly behind us is the outflow and Stairway Portage. We pulled up along a downed tree maybe 60' away from him and the moose actually approached toward us as he continued feeding. I figured as long as he was comfortable putting his head underwater, he wasn't intimidated. We sat there ~5 min after the video until he slowly walked up into the woods. It was awesome!

  • Awesome video !
