Oasis never kidded anyone for who they were. You got what you saw. Working class lads making timeless music. Simple? So what. They sold out places like Knebworth, Maine Road and Wembley consistently. Live Forever was probably the best British song written for 20 years. If the Beatles were so colossal and fantastic, why wouldn't you try to replicate their sound and image? Bands like Radiohead, Pink Floyd etc. are creative geniuses but deep, enigmatic music often seems pretentious. Oasis weren't.
The music isn't pretentious, that's just how some people view it, usually those who dislike the genre, or those who jump onto the bandwagon of disliking anything successful from middle to upper class backgrounds.
Also, how can you compare Oasis to Pink Floyd / Radiohead on the degree of pretension? Oasis's music is so simple and basic, that the music its self could never be subjectively received as pretentious, the only thing in Oasis which could be described that way are the band members themselves.

Fair point. Musical taste is of course subjective. But from a purely musical standpoint, Oasis were never that impressive. Four chords can make good songs, as the Beatles and countless others proved. But they never innovated. I speak as a musical antique who stopped listening to music made after 1996.

@TheAcidX what you speak of is The Wall, lyrics written by Roger Waters. obviously the only floyd song / album you've ever heard. sad considering its the most depressing, overrated, and my least favorite personally.
they have over 30 albums, all of which are out of this world. they flow as 'one whole song' and are borderline perfection if you are open-minded. and, judging by your name, you are probably quite open-minded lol. i'd recommend trying some. Dark Side, Meddle, Animals, just examples

@KB1523 The way you put that was kind of harsh but I have to agree with you on a few levels there. Pink Floyd are miles ahead of Oasis in my opinion. Pink Floyd are spanning galaxies way out there whilst thoughtfully probing the essence of human nature while Oasis barely make it down the garden path stumbling over beer cans.
However I disagree with you on the fact that they are ugly and not musicians. Of course they are musicians - they're not the best but they don't claim to be.

This is coming from an Oasis and PF fan: To be completely honest, it's very likely that David has never heard of Oasis, because yeah, Oasis is a great band, but Pink Floyd sound has created a universe of it's own. They are one of the biggest and innovative music groups ever to grace this earth, and I cannot even imagine what David was thinking when a drunken Noel Gallagher comes shouting at him pissdrunk. I would've probably just said "Begone, you peasant, you're talking to a God."

I never rated oasis highly cause i heard more of their opinions and the infighting than their music.But when i heard this interview and how floyd & gilmour inflenced them I gained so much respect for oasis.We only had triple j play thier music so it feels like we missed out on a lot of oasis..
