I had the problem that after installing 2gigs Ram the EE PC 901 Linux only reported 1gig. This turned out to be because it had an old BIOS. What you do is go to support.asus.com and download the latest bios (on any computer) rename it to 901.ROM and put it on a memory stick. Put that into a shutdown EEE PC 901 and hold down alt + F2 on startup. Scary, but it works.
Btw, see you've got some studio equipment there... recording musician? I'm curious.... have you ever tried recording with the eee? I did it... it was pretty much on the edge, recording audio was alright but when i loaded up stuff like EZ drummer or addictive drummer things started crackling. So. I have yet to do the ram upgrade tough. Might you have tried something like this after the upgrade?
I really doubt there's any upgrade you could make to the eee to make it a portable studio. Although for just kicking back and recording a little guitar when you're on the run, it may be ok, as long as you don't expect great quality.
I just kind of dabble in recording, atm none of my stuff is setup, I need to get motivated to get it all up and running.
Its not the best upgrade option, but its really cheap and easy to do. Myself, i run almost anything on my eee now. Got Windows 7 on it,, and i multi-task like crazy. Handles it well, but the main thing that made a difference for me was upgrading the solid state disk in it to a larger and much faster one.
I'm gonna try to put up some more info on some other upgrades and tweaks for them, so check in from time to time if ya want. in the mean time look this up on newegg

It's an awesome ssd upgrade. I'm booting windows 7 in about 20 seconds. Every app starts almost instantly.
You probably won't get too great of performance out of win7 on that 4gb ssd, not just speed, but space restriction tends to impact ntfs file system performance. Look into Ubuntu Jauny, if you get the alt cd, its like all installers in one and at the end you can choose to install the netbook remix. Everything will work perfect right after install. It's sweet.
Ubuntu.. nah, I don't like linux at all, besides I'm a win32 dev, need a windows environment.
I vLited the w7 so it would fit on the 4gb ssd, but im almost out of space there now so some apps have problems installing. I moved "program files" over to the 2nd disk and made a link to it as C. Will do the same for the winsxs folder for some extra space (about 1 GB) then it should be ok. So far speed is good anyway, full reboot in less than 1 minute; 720 h264 video playing fine, etc
This comment thing is acting buggy, never know if it worked...
Yeah, You should keep an eye out for a good deal on one of those ssd's though, its amazing, really improves performance across the board, i wanna get ssd's for my other systems now. I got a 64gb version of that same line coming on tuesday, so I can take this 32gb one and stick it in my mom's eee.
I like to vlite stuff myself too, except i tend to constantly wanna go back and change things to see what else i can tweak...
yeah, i read good things about those. I've had good luck with super talent so far, so i'm gonna stick with them on the next ssd for my i7 build. Seem to have good bang for buck ratio. I'd love to have a few of these things hooked up in raid configuration, or at least have a few, and split system files on one, home folder on another, and paging file and storage on another... would probably be a nice performance boost too.. money money money.... i need to sell my body. heh
what ddr?

Can you share the specs of the ram you used? Does the EeePc accept more than 2 GB of maximum ram?

Thanks for the video buddy! Can you tell me what brand RAM you used? i hear eee pc 901 can be picky...

what happens if in the bios it hasnt updated the new ram, and still reports using the 1gig ram from before?
alexwebster90 2 years ago
That's generally not a good thing, there's no bios options for the ram, you just make sure you get the right type, and it either works or it doesnt.

does the 2gb upgrade really make a noticeable difference since the eee pc is going to be running pretty basic programs right?

Cool, I'll subscribe.
I was looking at the optional SSDs for the eee, but didn't really want the extra cost, besides it's twice the price or more in Europe.
I have the 20GB (linux) model, using the 4GB one for w7. Also got a 16GB SD card for some extra storage. I love this thing so far.

yep SSD.. I'm moving to i7 soon for my desktop, I'll definitely go with a ~64 GB SSD or so for the main disk. Looking at OCZ Vertex ones
