I can tolerate many bizarre mechanisms in games, but there's one thing I absolutely despise in games and I hate it with all of my heart. Limited, or no control. With games like this, it's not player having fun. It's the computer. You just watch the damn AI entertaining itself.

That's why Majesty was shit, why pets in Black&White were shit, and that's why Gratuitous Space Battles is shit.

Elite wins spaceship game. Whole newtonian galaxy, with 3d graphics..and it fit on a floppy disk. As for spaceship shmups...Defender > all.

One of the descriptions on the craft, I think McCloud's, says it's a converted space fighter, so at least ONE of them is a spaceship. So I guess...technically?

The answer to "best piloted spaceship game", like any question this show asks, is Star Control 2. Hopefully someone can think of something more original, however. You should really just add in a "excepting Star Control II" to the end of every question.
