Jalaladin Suyuti, (849 - 911 AH) is one of the highest ranked Sunni scholars of all time. In his commentary of this verse, he records through 3 asnad (chains) of narrators, that the Prophet (s) told his companions that the verse referred to Ali and his Shi'a:

I went to the Prophet's mosque and then visited his grave to say salaam.

I saw some people appearing to invoke/dua/supplicate the Prophet. But this is Shirk.

All dua/supplication should be directed at Allaah alone.

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "If you ask, ask of Allaah, and if you seek help, then seek the help of Allaah." [Tirmidthee, good and authentic]

Qur'aan ::And the mosques are for Allâh (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allâh. (Al-Jinn 72:18)

We will also continue to say salaam to our Prophet and ask Allaah to extol, honour and bless the Prophet, as this is a good thing.

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said: : Beware of those who preceded you and used to take the graves of their prophets and righteous men as places of worship, but you must not take graves as Masjids; I forbid you to do that. Refer to the English Translation of Saheeh Muslim for the complete Hadeeth, Chapter 47: Forbiddance to build Masjids on the Graves & decorating them with pictures and forbiddance to use graves as Masjids: Book 4: Hadeeth no: 1083.

Proof regarding the prohibition of building on graves: From Jaabir bin Abdullaah who said that the Messenger of Allaah prohibited plastering of the graves and sitting upon it and building upon it. This hadeeth is in Kitaab ul-Janaaiz 2/667 in Muslim.

The shrines above the graves of the Awliya (righteous Muslims) and Ahlul Bayt in some countries are illegal under Islaamic law.

For example, in Karbala, the Shia actually invoke/supplicate/dua to Al-Husain, which is clear Shirk.

Mosques and shrines above graves are forbidden in Islaam. They lead to the worship of others besides Allaah, where people supplicate/dua to other than Allaah, which is Shirk.

Proof regarding levelling graves:: From Abu Al-Hayaaj Al-Asadiy who said Ali ibn Abi Taalib said to me I am dispatching you upon what the Messenger dispatched me upon, that, you do not leave statues except you deface it nor a grave raised except you level it This hadeeth is in Kitaab ul-Janaaiz 2/666 in Muslim.

And upon what do you want this unity between the different sects to be based upon? The Prophet (SAW) told us that his ummah would divide into 73 sects with only being the 'saved sect', when asked he said "they are those who are upon what I am upon and what you (i.e. Sahabah) are upon today". There can be NO unity between the Muslims and the shia because the shia curse the very people that Allah and His messenger loves!! No to fake unity, yes to real unity based on Quran and Sunnah!
