Associational studies aren't worth the paper they are written on---I can use the same techniques to show that drinking water causes car accidents or that flushing the toilet causes rain. Just today ABC had a study showing vitamin use linked to cancer. CRAP!

They surveyed cancer patients to see whether they were taking vitamins---some were. Therefore there is a link between vitamins and cancer. They could have asked "Do you sneeze?" and then claimed a link between sneezing and cancer. The methodology of the study and the raw data are important, and associational studies are flawed from the very beginning, usually because no accurate direct link may be established, merely a vague association lacking credible evidence---Wakefield's trademark.
