I find it really hard to judge Buddy's personality.
He seems so nice and polite in this interview, but i've heard A LOT of bad stuff about his behaviour. (His hate on Matched Grip players and about him making death threats to his bandmembers for not playing correctly)
Although he seems nice in this interview, he also seems like someone who would explode if you said something wrong
I'm young, so i'm a bit uneducated about his life, but I would like to know what kind of a guy he really was.
Anybody who says Buddy took credit for being the greatest drummer of all time is proven wrong here...he says it's a great compliment, too difficult to live up to. Even though he's obviously denying the truth, he said he played what he felt and not by the book.
Buddy did what had to be done ! Tell me this ? who has done more and with greater perfection ? He was the Greatest Drummer of all Times ! Ed Man ( Rock & Jazz Percussionist Extraordinaire)
@cellardoor199991 he played for 68 of 69 years of his life.ive heard the tapes and he was super rude but when you are the pinnacle chief cornerstone of what you do, you want top notch bandmates.he was leading bands at 11 years old for fuck sake.he smoke drank and most likely was into coke and the fact that he had so much feel makes the technicality of his playing even more astounding.i heard he was also quite kind and paid well and never had the heart to fire too many people.
The man was both a great artist and a great thinker. He was right-on regarding the importance of spontaneity in jazz.
