Japanese companies in USA assemble cars with American workers following American labor laws. They do not bring Japanese workers to USA, nor do they bring fully assembled cars here. Workers follow same 8 hour shifts and benefits as others, but Japanese companies do not do whatever the Unions ask them. But, if you compare Japan, it is GOOD that they can work 10 hour days and as many days as they want. Most Americans work overtime on any job and do not want 8 hour limits.
@StopFear I agree with you about Japanese cars for the most part (although I drive German) and aside from the union remark. Unions are important to keep pay fair even if they can get out of hand (like with athletes). I wish there were unions for hotel maids so my wife could get her hours back instead of getting them cut (along with every other maid there) so that the boss can take 6 vacations (two to Hawaii) a year while the on-site managers do all of the work for less than a dollar per hour.

On one hand, of course, Unions seem like a good idea because they "bargain" for more hours and more pay. I have worked with many companies over the years and when a company doesn't pay me for the work I have done, I go elsewhere. I did the initial designs for the latest Camaro and Volt etc...Whom else is GM not paying? I designed the F-22 and F-35 while in high school. people complain about the price of gas. ill tell you all why the price is so high its greedy POLITICIANS and greedy CEOs. if they didnt think they need tens of millions of dollars just to sit on they could lower prices on everything. food,clothing,electronics,and so on. i think someone that makes one million a year could easily live comfortably me and my girl together make 50 grand a year and we are fed have a house car and buy our kid lots of things. its a greedy nation and it starts at the top

@wifibrawler3501 Oil Production in the U.S. steadily decreased from 1985-2008. Since 2008 oil production has been increasing and is now passing the 2004 low mark (our lowest year in history). However, we have not reached the record highs of the early 1980s. The fact is, we are drilling and producing even more than during prior administrations.

Japanese companies in USA assemble cars with American workers following American labor laws. They do not bring Japanese workers to USA, nor do they bring fully assembled cars here. Workers follow same 8 hour shifts and benefits as others, but Japanese companies do not do whatever the Unions ask them. But, if you compare Japan, it is GOOD that they can work 10 hour days and as many days as they want. Most Americans work overtime on any job and do not want 8 hour limits.

@StopFear I agree with you about Japanese cars for the most part (although I drive German) and aside from the union remark. Unions are important to keep pay fair even if they can get out of hand (like with athletes). I wish there were unions for hotel maids so my wife could get her hours back instead of getting them cut (along with every other maid there) so that the boss can take 6 vacations (two to Hawaii) a year while the on-site managers do all of the work for less than a dollar per hour.

@dgolightly519 I mean.... seriously.. they are on fixed pay of only around 300$ per month but live in a small broken-down apartment for free (very broken down, but are a new family and so don't care... like all those hired under the high turnover rate to be managers there) and they clean rooms while the actual maids take pay-cuts, hour loss, and work "revamping" (are told to clean rooms at 2 rooms per hour with one maid per room and are docked for mistakes, three times the normal workload)

I do not know what state you are from. Here in California the hotel workers cannot even not be joined to a union. On one hand, of course, Unions seem like a good idea because they "bargain" for more hours and more pay. But on another hand it could be called "extortion" because they are unable to simply force the employer to pay them more, he can just hire better employees who do not complain. Another thing with Unions, think about it. There are many competing hotels for example. Maybe a number of hotels per owner etc. The ones who have most money will be affected by the Union demands for pay increases the least of all, but those trying to grow and compete will have even less and not be able to compete. Another thing is Unions require people to join and do not let them unjoin, create mandatory fee every month. My mom has $40 take every month for Union

Funny to see Obama's interest in American manufacturing. Why is that? Well when Toyota came out with the prius, the most fuel efficient car on the market, they couldn't produce 'em fast enough for American buyers. The only real competitor with such fuel economy is the ford focus, but how many people buy American cars outside of North and Central America? The Europeans are developing more efficient technology and so are the Japanese. We need to be able to win over the foreign car markets.
