@pepi560 The base stuff that it is more important, is not in the graphics :) Linux is stable and FREE!! And beside this comes the other stuff (like compiz) :) So go on and spread linux!
i have open suse 11.2 gnome template like you almost and you have to go to desktop efects and set it to extra but mine dose not give me the option to set the level of visules. sorry about my spelling. do you think it is because this os is running in a virtule machene.
@technogeek314159 If you are using vmware or virtualbox, the visual part won't work as you expected. The only thing that resolves this issue is installing it on your machine as a native OS, and install videocard drivers. Motherboard videocards won't work well, only if you have nvidia or ati i guess. Good luck! :)
man i tried gnome and kde and i have to say gnome is easier and didnt crash on me as kde did. so im sticking with gnome, i might try opensuse with gnome sometime. as of right now i have windows 7 vista and ubuntu and recovery partitions on my disk so no more space.
The stock compiz provided by opensuse does not offer various effects and plugins. Go to compiz fusion and download the version for opensuse. Compiz for gnome is more friendly to activate rather than KDE. Make sure you have DRI running in X11, else forcing to run 3D will crash your X
There is an old version of compiz included in the installer dvd. But you can always search for new software at the following location: software[.]opensuse[.]org/search and with one click install you can easyly intsall it
Hey great video, I was searching for this, didnt think it was possible to run compiz on suse 11.1... I have been trying to get it working for some time, it doesnt work with me : \ it seems to be a problem for almost every user of suse11.1.
Anyone had the same problem as me? I've google it and no luck with getting it working : \
Thanks, I will try to explain. So I installed everything, compiz fusion and stuff and then it just doesn't work, I set the effects I want but nothing happens, from what I've been reading, this is an universal problem with opensuse 11.1 .
Tried to reinstall compiz over and over, still no results, also diamond doesn't work either.
Also I was under gnome, you're using KDE or Gnome?
I'm using gnome. How did you activate compiz? Do you have fusion-icon installed? Try to run in in a terminal. If there's an error it should appear there. A commonly problem is that the compiz core version is different from the other components (this was the problem in my case). I hope this helps
Opensuse is rpm based, ubuntu is debian based. So the only thing you notice is that you are downloading rpm packages instead of deb packages, and of course you cannot use apt-get and stuff but there is a similar tool called zypper. And there are other differences, but overall there are similar.
is there any difference in performance because im downloading OpenSuse 11.1 and its 4.3GBs and Ubuntu is something near 700Mbs so there must be a difference like performance or compatibility somewhere
Suse has a costum install option where you can install aditional software, so the whole dvd contains a lot of software. When you install ubuntu you install only a few necessary programs needed to run the system, then after the install you can install others too with the package manager or with apt-get
My opinion is that Suse is more "powerful". I haven't experienced speed issues with none of them. With suse you can do more out of the box, and with ubuntu you can't (that's my opinion). But the beauty of linux is that you can costumize it the way you like it. Try both of them and decide which one you wanna use
And the other thing is that the Suse instalation dvd contains KDE too. Ubuntu is Gnome only, and Kubuntu is KDE only. So different desktop environments have different dependencies etc.
from now on i <3 opensuse
