You're actually wrong in your understanding of what a saint is. All sainthood represents is the recognition (via miracles after the virtuous individual has died) that the person is in heaven and watching over the living. There is reason to suppose that the head of a religion should be able to figure out if someone is in heaven.

I went last week to see Mary McKillop Museum. It was wonderful. I prayed at her tomb. I want to go again. By the way the coffee shop was wonderful. The service came with a smile :)
