  • mmmmm bacon.

  • have you tried the bahco laplander, lighter, it folds and cuts far better nutn you should look into it

  • Looks like you guys need some rum or whisky!

  • @DaNtHeMaN919 lol we would get along just fine...i love my rum...:)

  • I guess you debunked the myth that pocket rockets don't work in the cold but I still like whisperlites better. yeah they're bigger, heavier, and harder to use but once you start using them they you will never want to use anything else.

  • nutn what pants are u wearing llbea timberledge?

  • I would love to see a winter boot video sometime.

    Things to look for..

    Features and what not. =D

If and when you get time of course.

    Thanks! ^_^

  • The Esee is much nicer knife than the RTAK2.

  • Been out sleeping when it was colder.. i'm just saying becouse i know how hard everything is when the temperatures drops that low. thinking about going on a hike in very cold conditions this year also. trying out the norwegian army's food, becouse it is light to carry.. but also its very expensive (350kr/50USD) for food for 1 day... Greetings from Norway!

  • @kjelliz1 Greetings back from Germany, you guys up north fucking rock!

  • im impressed that you'd go out in the winter. nice work dude. im doing the same this october.. way up north..survival training.... so why did you not stay the night? the idea of shit sleep was...the tipping point?

  • Haha!!!...Awesome......come on, give it up.... the Junglass rocks right!! I get the feeling you are kinda stuck on your favorite R-Tak II....I bought the Junglass based on your testing of the R-Tak II, the Junglass is simply the next level!! Love what you do, just laughing at the seeming reluctance to plug the Esee......Good stuff Nutnfancy!!!! Love sharing the adventure with ya, very inspiring!!!!! God Bless!!

  • 27:33 Man I was jumping on my chair. That looks so freaking delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • At 45:47 Allie looks like a stalking Jawa

  • Bon appetite, gentlemen.

  • awesome vid nutnfancy :)

  • Bacon...mmmmm

  • if i ever venture to the states i'm coming winter time :)

just beautiful scenery. excellent job guys.

  • nutnfancy.. i don have any memories like these :(

my dad never took me anywhere...

and.. i was alot closer to my mom tew. don worry im not gay. but i swear im going to make memories like this for my kids when i have them.

also. i culd kinda say this is a memory now :)

cuz i got see the snow

  • @lvKingCobravl cool story bro :3

  • thank you nutnfancy now im packing BACON on my hikes :D

  • 0:01

  • i live in hawaii, u guys make me wanna be there

  • Been lovin your vids for ages, but you're gonna have to cut down the weight, especially the 50lb cans of vegetables. No experienced backpacker would fathom packing something like that. If they did, they would empty the water out at pitch the can at least and melt snow to cook it in.

  • Damn, when quality food is prepared out there, it tastes x10000 better!

  • Did you know military grade explosives are made using Hexamine tablets (Trioxane is component of these tablets too)?

  • Heh, when I heard the sawing sound at 5:50 I thought your friend was using a bowdrill :-) I thought 'that doesn't seem very nutnfancy-ish..."

  • i have those same socks crocket. they rule

  • Some times work it me n my old man always take some chicken breast with lemon peper n salt with ranch style beans for that first nights dinner after a long hike that just make the trip

  • big knife alternative (couldn't watch you wasting energy at 15:30 ): saw the tree, split the log once with a hatchet (no solid ground needed, just lay the log on an other log and strike, easy and fast to learn), do the rest with a small thick bladed knife.

a hatchet can do fine work too, weights less that an full sized axe and works faster than a big blade. (axe/hatchet concentrates the power much better on the surface you want to work on.)

works great for me, even in very cold conditions ;)

  • outstanding as usual thanks.

  • amazing videos. God it gives me that warm feeling watching this video & the other trips you've done. I LOVE the pictures you take along the way too. Realy captures the beauty of the locations you visit. Keep this stuff up when you can because I'll always watch them, admire & Have to do the same someday :D

  • Great vids man, really enjoy them.Watched the vid on U.S.K's before this and got some good ideas on what to include. Ive always thought of making one but only after watching it, i put one together. Keep the good work up dude and just a quick question, your dog ali, does she carry her own provisions on her back ? not that im saying its wrong or anything.. just be interesting to know ! (=

  • I dont understand why people need to waste their time and energy chopping down wood to little pieces when you can just bur the whole log and keep moving it into the fire as it burns. I guess the whole idea of camping/backpacking is to waste your time and enjoy splitting wood

  • @3n82 spoken like a true armchair elitist who has never tried making a backwoods fire in winter conditions.

  • @3n82 Try standing on a slope, in deep powder, on snow shoes, and swing your big axe and then get back to me. A saw to fall and cut the tree and then batoning with a big knife is so much easier, and safer, in such conditions. Additionally, to get back to your original comment, it is much harder to burn an uncut frozen, or wet, log whole, than it is to burn smaller pieces with sharp edges. You can get away with it in dry summer conditions with dry wood, but not it winter.

  • @n1ese Clearly your mind is set on a knife, there are other ways to using an axe but i guess you wouldn't know about it

  • @n1ese Get that Knife out of your ass and use an AXE like a man

  • Nutn when u go on trips and pass ppl with just a water botlle wat do u say? I always go do u have a knife firestarter or cordage. They always say no i kindof laugh but they should watch some of u vids and soon they will be loaded

  • dude, honestly iv watched more hours of your vids than i have TV in the last 2 weeks. Im a fairly new TNPr and i have some catching up to do lol. But i love your adventure and run and gun vids. i really liked this one in HD! keep it up your doing awesome!

  • List of items I bought because of the trusted and informative reviews: Ruger SR9 (No issues) Ruger MKIII, Ruger LCP, Spyderco Tenacious & Persistence, (Both w/ zip tie mods by Crocket, Stream light Stylus pro & micro stream, Preon2, Fenix LD20, LD10 w/ Fenix headband, FenixTK11, Kershaw Blur, Kershaw Skyline (Crockets review), Buck Vantage,JanSport Carson, Merrel boots, 511 medic roll, RTakII, RAT5, Ankle Gaitors, There isnt enough room to list it all, hopefully this shows we listen Nutn!

  • Love that Junglas.. I just ordered mine last week.. (damn thing is on back order =( )

They make stainless steel water bottles, I have one myself. You can keep in very close to the fire or boil water in it. Might be better than a plastic bottle.

    Great series too!

I've been inspired to go out day hiking and backpacking as well.

    Rock on!

  • And just so you know, I had to eat too!. Dog and I roughed it here in the house, broke out some homemade meals/snacks, just for comfort level. Ha. And I agree with the other guy Nutn, forget the critics man. Your doing a great job here, having fun, and people are listening and learning, in fact, I am going to post my gear list here to show your word is getting out and people value your opinion.

  • Thanks Nutnfancy and Crocket, always enjoy the review vids, but I especially like these. Helps me learn and plan. Not to steal anything from Nutn, but I have the Fenix LD10 (w/ fenix headband), LD20, and TK11. I love all 3. LD20 is my back up at work (LE) and the primary light off duty, backup is a Preon 2 and a Micro Stream. People like to kid me about carrying 3 lights, 2 knives & a MT, plus a Ruger LCP, but Im prepared. Also added a Fisher space pen, good item to add.

  • Nutn, this may be a stupid question but between the Quark Mini and a Petzel head lamp, which would you choose but also WHY? I've been eyeballing Petzels for a while until I saw your vids on the Quarks. And then a random side note which would you suggest for a pistol light and rifle light? Thanks and good vids as always.

  • your dog looks like your pack horse lol.

  • What Fenix lights are you guys useing?

  • try a pocket saw for cutting logs

  • Great Job Nutn, I just watched both vids with my two dogs (well, they watched for a little time) Kudos to Allie for being a sport and double Kudos to you for taking care of her while she was up there. Keep up the good work

  • thumbs up if you got really hungry when they were eating

  • I've been watching TNP for a couple of years now and I've garnered tons of awesome info from you, Nutn. But I've got to be honest, broham, you seem to be coming across negative on camera. I'm not sure if all the unfair criticisms have got you on edge. Just seems to me that with TNP production values getting increasingly more excellent, your on camera attitude seems to have soured a little. Forget the critics, brotha. Don't even address them on vid. We love you, man! Keep doing it! God bless.

  • @OWretchedManThatIam I think that Nutn and I both have become more cynical about YouTube in general and it probably does come across on film from time to time. No good dead goes unpunished, and Nutn deals with it and forges ahead, but yes..it can color one's perspective. -- Veri

  • The beauty of nature is breathtaking

  • -5 degrees might be a little cold. but i still wish i could be there on one of your tirps. They seem pretty amazing!

  • Wow... I can't believe it took me this long to actually watch this. The good news is that I watched it with my son sitting next to me (school's closed due to snow storm). Great job guys in showing what it really does take to not only survive in such harsh conditions, but having a good time doing it as well! A lot of lessons learned.

    Thanks again and great work!

  • grilled chicken with bacon: "outstanding backpacking tool" pt 1, by nutnfancy

  • Great Show, watched both parts in HD... I have a few questions. Just wondering, what the threat level from wild game was? and did you guys have have have any type of communication devices? How far did you travel from A to B?. I can understand leaving point B due to the cold. Also hiking at night, especially in winter is a show in itself. Glad you made it, and Kudo's to Allie, she's a real trooper!... Lol, I just spent the last 4 hours watching your vid's...off to bed.

    Cheers. Good Job guys!!

  • Snow day in NY, and a great way pass the time, watch hiking in the snow that have warm fires and great views of America!

  • I turned up the heater 5 min into the vid. Lol

  • Thanks for the great vid. I learned a lot just like I do in all your other vids.

  • im hungry and all i have is an MRE

  • SO TRUE about good chow out in the woods makes all the difference. I watched part one right after you posted it, but finally got around to watching part 2. It was worth the wait!

So when are we going to hit the trail?! Great video as always, take care

  • a lot of people cant belive i sit and watch a guy and his dog hang out on the side of a snow coverd hill, chop wood, make fires and hike. but the vids are just fn to watch man keep it up!

  • Just reading the description made me go to the fridge XD

  • I like how long nutn's videos are, and how often he posts new ones. that must be incredibly hard to edit all that footage, yet he does it.That's dedication!

  • man 25 min in and im fungry, i had to make a move out of the country and its been 3 years since ive had a good fire and this makes me miss my childhood and young adulthood as i haven't been able to do this in sometime, thanks for the vid brings back good memories, 18 years of being in the outdoors then not for 3 years makes me feel empty, im sure anyone can relate when their not able to enjoy the outdoors, great vid, i beleive with all my heart we all will one day need these skills, to survive

  • I love Allie..nice to see you look out for her, and make sure she isnt freezing or in danger, my dog is spoiled in the same way..love the vids..he said pocket rocket..haha.. TNP'r 4 years - Bdown

  • greate intro song. Who is it? What's the song called?

  • I just love these videos Nutn ;)

    Keep on making them :D

  • hey this is a great video, i just want to think yall for taking the time and effort to put out this kinda thing for us, i know its not easy. i haven't been into this for very long but im learning alot, and i really enjoy it! again thanks for putting in the hard work for others to learn and enjoy Great work!

  • welcome to sweden we have -32 degrees!!!!

  • why rat changed it's name to esee?

  • cool vid

  • Good Vid, but it is Merry Christmas....not Happy Holidays.....Hope your not gearin up for Discovery...lol...j/k...keep it real

  • nutn i got to say great thanks for turning me on to Amron International for my kelty eagle 7850 you saved me over a hundred bucks by that, and they where awesome to work with, and its a very sweet pack! we love you here in oregon atleast central oregon.. and we dont care what the rest of the liberal state of oregon thinks..thats why we have gun shows every weekend, we love our second amendment! but really thanks a bunch.. we love you and cr0cket too.good to see you guys roaming in our home state

  • Awesome landscape, where is it? Greetings from Germany...

  • I'd totally have hand warmers on a trip like that, did you have any with you nutn?

Even toe warmers [even though their benefit is negligible], heck I'd put a hand warmer in each boot.

  • Nutn, this is a phenomenal video. Those city slickers have nothing on you! I live in michigan and would like to start doing this kind of things. I have asked for a sog seal pup elite, cold steel SRK, cold steel ak47, fallkniven f1, and a switchblade for xmas. I just recently got ankle surgery so i am dying of cabin fever from watching ALL of your videos. Keep up the knife reviews! they are outstanding!

  • its sad cause Allie willingly goes backpacking in 0 degrees and my dog won't even get near the freezer

  • Great job guys! it's just amazing seeing what you guys do for fun I do for my reserve service! which is fun! but only I probably end up carrying more than you ;)

Thumbs up for the dedication of capturing the good moments!

  • buy a tripod and head mount for the camera already....sheesh ;)

  • Big fan nutnfancy, i currently live in SW Virginia maybe you hunted in these parts when you were younger. Anyways i'm so anxious to be heading west in the spring love to see those Rockies and do some backwoods bivouacs, enjoy your vids bro.

  • nice trip! I've planned this year's first winter trip for tomorrow. But not that long hike and temperatures forecasted to be around -5°C.

testing my new hatchet ^^ and cooking something nice on the fire.

  • you can burn money...its made cotten...in a pinch

  • Great bid! Can you make a vid about planning a menu for A backpacking trip?

  • Wow, Nutn. Another great vid... Just got two questions -

    1. Why did you chop that log at 16:25 instead of sawing it? Was that to show how well the knife works and how sharp it is, or does that allow the logs to burn better? (Kinda dumb, question, but i wasn't sure)

    2. You sure pack a lot of gear in your Kelty Eagle! Could you make a video on how you pack and organize your gear?

Oh, and love the dog, man!

Thanks, and happy holidays to you too!

  • @Agemrepus i cant answer the 1st one bro, prob just happend to be the easist thing to do at the time, 2. if you go to Nutn' page and look in play lists u will see a playlist called Outdoor/Backpacking Equipment Reviews, which has what Nutn' takes in his packs, also a series called high skies i think part3 has a breakdown of what Nutn carries for winter knife clinics

  • @TheDishD hey thanks man - i'll definitely check those out when i have a moment!

  • Allie makes a great companion, and she is a lucky dog to have such an adventurous master like Nutn. For those of you who expressed concern about her in the cold, fear not. Labs are an incredibly tough breed, and she's wearing a coat and boots no less. She was born for this. She eats it up. like chicken and bacon.

My black labs hunt ducks in sub zero weather, and break the ice to swim for fun even when there are no ducks. Allie was just fine. Nice job on the video fellas, looks like fun.

  • You took a risk taking your dog with you Nutn. She was very cold and could have been a liability if she shut down. What would you have done if she didn't want to leave for home? You can't carry her and I'm sure you wouldn't have left her. With conditions like that it is risky taking your pet along when you can't change your plans. Be careful she is not a young dog anymore buddy, that's it.

  • nice vid man i was just wondering, im joining the marines after highschool, and wanted t o know what good equipement there is out there for such duty. like good knives and camping stuff. i live in illinois and wanted to know just more stuff i can do to prepare for the marines. would be really nice if i could get some great info on this. maybe you could to a whole video on something dealing with this kind of stuff. please let me know thanks again.

  • @Super9master1 Get in excellent shape. lol. I know alot of guys that went and they all said they didn't do enough to prepare their bodies. The gear is all secondary to that i'm sure.

  • @Super9master1 get any pack that can take 50-60 pounds, load it up and get fit bro, i wouldnt worry about gear, just get freaking fit and used to carying Heavy loads, best of luck to u in USMC, from an Ex- Royal Marine Commando.

  • Is allie a black lab?

  • @marineairsoftsniper7 yes bro she sure is

  • man that chow looks good.. sitting here at work drooling.

  • Now I see why you have such a heavy backpack, you have your whole BBQ equipment with you ;)

  • Probably my favorite video you've ever done (and I've seen pretty much all of them). I am so into tactical gear, lights, knives, etc., but this video not being about weapons at all really made me like it.

This kind of stuff is what life is about and while yes, you should be ready and prepared always, I like that this went in a different direction. Has a very different feel to it too because it is a lot of footage and not so edited and filled with transitions/graphics etc. Good stuff.

  • GREEN GIANT !!!!!!!!!!

  • I like that dog's booties

  • Nutn, that was a great outting to share! I watched it in high def...gorgeous views. I was left thinking two things; that the Junglas is definitely on the Chirstmas list and, that hot shower when you got home must have felt AMAZING! Kudos to both you, Cr0cket20 and especially Ali for getting through that trip with all your digits! Looking forward to your tabletop review of the ESEE Junglas!

  • @Dashinify Thanks for the cool comment and it was a great trip...especially after it's done! The Esee Junglas is a great blade, love it. Better handle than RTAK II but about the same cutting performance in my estimation. Table top soon!

  • @nutnfancy Yay, exactly what I've been waiting for. Mine will be here on Wed so I'm excited. I plan on using it on my winter hikes for this exact purpose. Thanks, as always, Nutn. Can't wait to see your TTR

  • @nutnfancy do those canned items freeze and burst ? when your out there do you get flam in your thoat and snot sickals?

  • @nutnfancy Not to be a pest, but putting in another vote for a Junglas review. You are awesome, man. keep up the great work.

  • Ali was just trying to do her part in keeping the bread thawed.

  • im thinking about buying the ESEE Junglas, what are your thoughts on the knife? ill be using it in the wet and cold, mostly for fire and sheltercraft when needed. it seems like a great knife im just loking for your opinion! thanks! Great videos by the way! keep it up!

  • Comment removed

  • OMG im so hungry now and i have nothing to eat and i just got SO DAMN hungry when i saw you guys cooking that food !!!! That looked like REALLY GOOD!! Btw, do you have any salt and pepper with you?

  • where are the stainless water bottles?

  • Nutn, what an awesome video. I can only imagine how much engery the two of you exspened on your trip. Did you stop for a snack or power boost on the way up? I am always amazed when you split wood and the method you use. It so efficient and the Junglas blade seemed to make your work easier...what a cool blade. I really liked the saw you had too...it is hard sawing a tree and in those conditions...so Cold...even harder. Your dinner looked mighty tasty. All that in one day. Awesome Video!

  • Nutn, Thank for the great video. Looking forward to the review of the Dog gear. As always, much appreciated for the information that you provide.

  • hey nutn, what would you recommend for a 2or3 person winter tent?

  • Your dog is awesome :) so well trained!

  • This is a very interesting video...you can hear in their voices how cold it is, their faces are practically frozen.

  • Why doesn't Nutn just use a high quality, small axe? It would likely require less energy than all those reps on the saw.

  • good video...but you didn't think to bring snow shoes? I haven't finished the video yet so I may be speaking too soon but does look like it

  • nutnfancy your dope but man spend less calories chopping with that over-sized knife... 16:50. your in axe country!

  • @thedodubb I bet he rather use the axe but he's still a tester.

  • about the water bottle freezing problem... i am in the back county of Tahoe every winter. Picked this up from someone somewhere. Water freezes from the top down. So make sure the lid is on and keep the bottle upside down, this will not keep the bottle from freezing all the way but will let you take a drink, if only part way frozen.

  • @HalfFull I just stick it upside down in the bottle pocket with a hand warmer by the lid for when it gets really cold.

  • I'd go! :D

  • what pack does crocket have? kelty redwing?

  • nutnfancy, I think you'll find that victorinox can opener easier to use if you go clockwise instead of counterclockwise. That way, you don't have to use your thumb to hold the tool open.

  • "dodgin' Nutns farts......full time job" bwahhaha!

  • Cool man. Looks like a great time. Hit me up if you ever head out to Texas!

  • how much is the sheath for the Esee Junglas??? where do you get it?

    (other than the actual website)

    thx

  • Crocket's such a hottie! <3

  • lots of gasoline makes a good fire with some wood lol jk great viedo fun to watch informative and just an all around enjoyable viedo keep up the great work

  • Thanks for another great video !!

Gotta agree with you .. fire is #1 in those conditions, a person won't survive long without it.

That bacon wrapped chicken looked amazing, gonna try that on our next camping trip for sure !

  • Thanks for sharing this time with us all..

    regards from the UK!

  • That was a long video to watch, but it was completely worth it. It makes me want to get out and do some hiking/camping here in Wisconsin. We just got 20" of snow on Dec. 10th and it is -15 out now. Thanks NutnFancy!

  • @kirksfilms You must be in the Northern part of Wis. In southeastern Wis. we only got 3in. but it rained right before the snow hit so it's all ice under the snow and it got too cold for the salt to work.

  • @mojsmg Yep. 1 hr. east of Minneapolis. I was supposed to go the Vikings game yesterday. Did you see the video of the Dome collapse?

  • @kirksfilms Oh yeah, that was messed up. Didn't help Favre though, lol.

  • Thank y'all both for braving the cold and uncomfort to share with TNPers. In the spring, I definitely want to try my first time camping. I am definitely in the high-schoolers of camping/hiking. Thanks for posting!

  • Impresionante!! -23!! Me encantan tus videos, cuando vas a hacer uno en español??

    Hi5 nut'n - beautiful...

  • Nutn, have you tried the unbelievable saw? Seems to cut well when i've tried it.

  • @Cr0cket20 I didn't think of that, a petroleum based ointment. I'll have to test that. Thanks for the info and keep up the good work! You and Nutn make up a great team.

  • another great adventure video sir. you & crocket20 & allie (tmd) are all to be commended for your efforts & sharing them with us. thank you.

  • wow this looks like alot of fun!

  • it kinda seems like you get bored to easy! you were switching subject's more than usual!

  • Where is this taking place at, Colorado? If so, that's where I'm moving after college and I'm going to join a search and rescue team in the Rockies as a second job.

  • Hey nutn, I just got 50 bucks for my birthday, what piece of gear should I buy? I'm sure you have a good suggestion. Sweet adventure, btw.

  • -10 with -20 windchill is like being sandblasted no thx

  • I like to take shop paper towels (the Brawney Blue one) and fill them with vasoline and then wrap them up in tight bundles. They will ignite very easily and can get a good roaring fire going. Might try it.

  • Awesome Job as always Guys! Great look into your camp cooking but I missed the griddle toast, I would have like to see that!

    Nate

  • nutn, you should check out the Bahco Laplander folding saw. I've heard great things and its very affordable.

  • Hahaha! I'm off to go buy my G string to add to my winter hiking gear. Seriously cool guys. Nutn you always take it to the extreme and it's fun to watch!

  • Hey nutn just got back from my day hike, it was 0 degerees out and 60mph winds, with 2 ft of snow and no snowshoes. im definatyl investing in some soon. anyways the rtak and sawvivor worked like champs and we got a great fire going. the only downside was we stopped the hike 2 miles in to set up camp and make fire due to constant postholing. but over all it was great. happy holiday to you and the family, il keep in touch, thanks:)

  • Looked like a Good time.

  • @bucki58 I beleive that was -5.8 degrees

  • nutings easy but everything fancy

  • wd40 rulz

  • Great video, as always!! Just one question about the fire making. I didn't quite get exactly what was used to start the fire with. Cr0cket20 used a fire stick and cotton wool to start the initial fire, but I'm only guessing here, the cotton was impregnated with some sort of fuel to take a spark so easily. If so, what was it?

  • @siralec2 vaseline.

  • -58 degrees! That is crazy! I thought winter weather in Ohio was rough.

  • Great Video! Where do you find the time?

  • "Your fires to big. Well I'll say this, your not up here where this is the temperature." Enters man from Siberia. lololol (i'm not from Siberia btw)
