He looks like he doesnt know this kata or just learned this kata he isnt performing his blocks and punchs like he should. They should be strong and fast not slow unless he still learning the kata.
To the people stating 'He's doing the Kata wrong', or saying move x at time z is supposed to be y:
Each 'family' has changed the Kata to the way they perceive or interpret the movements. Also, the kata is a mean to introduce, and allow people to practice new movements. Seeing how he is just a white belt, he should be allowed to take it slow, speed is not important at his rank.
okay..thats still not pinan shodan ..looks like a mix of shodan and nidan ..slow kata dosnt mean relax..training purpose ?..I take back what I said before..the negative comments, but still ..lacks fundamentals of white belt even.
This has been slowed for training purposes, and is part of a DVD collection which has all the Dentokan Shorin Ryu kata slow from 4 directions and once thru at full speed. I also has all of the bunkai.
ok i think i got it. what coc084 refers to is shodan for us. i asked my sensei and she told me that in our school (shito ryu) they swapped the katas because they thought it would be better to teach nidan (for you) first, as it is easier. our katas are also a bit different, at the beginning we do a mae geri instead of a soto geri :-(
nono this is correct too :-D pinan shodan can be nidan and nidan can be shodan it depens the school (this is the shodan from today because the other are much more difficult for newbies) :-)
this kata has changed so much

When coming toward the camera, His stances do look very much like kokutsodachi, rather than Sheikodachi as I was tought?

no, Nidan opens with a hammer strike in cat, followed by a mid-level punch in Zenkutsu (at least at our dojo)

slingblade2012 5 years ago
Yeah, in Shudokan this is our Yellow Belt kata, and even though he's doing it amazingly slow it is very poor, but he does appear to be a white belt.
