A culture has to have a mythos in order to be cohesive?? You have any evidence for the statement that we MUST believe lies and unsupported scientific claims in order to be cohesive??? What a nonsensical thing to say.
Atheism is not a threat to organized religion common sense and facts are threats to religions. A culture should be not be based on delusion. Fairy tales are not needed for a good culture. Which religions is true, all or none. Im going with None.
@party489 It cannot be all since many, if not all religions hold contradictory beliefs. It's more likely that none of them are correct because they are all based on mythology and not observable reality.
@Jonstern1983 More likely that none of them are correct. Wow why cant most people use this simple logic to put their old religious BS behind. We do not need unjustified myths in any culture.
Don't listen to these people who twist your arguments. I think you hit it home when you brought up the example if Islamic culture overtaking secular European culture simply because they have increasingly less prominence for any concept of divine-ness in their mainstream society. It seems like all these folks intent on driving religion out of society really just can't accept that there is any form of valid knowledge outside of empirical knowledge.
Another system that appeals to egotism, escapism, and intentional disassociation that defines religion is needed.
Maybe something that can combine the buddhism distain for narcissism (while still appealing to personal validation and escapism) that somehow implements disassociation that most faith-heads require to survive their own self-loathing. IT would have to be well designed and appeal in more ways than established religion.
Without fairy tales to NOT believe in then there would just be people going about theri lives ........People used to believe that a "god" used to throw the lightning bolts from the heavens to punish sinners....over time with knowledge, that myth bit the dust. The same will probably be true with christianity at some point and then they will come up with something else to believe in.Case and point..? Scientology...gee whats next? lol
This is pretty follish on your part IMO. Atheists do not spend their time trying to take people away from religion. I will debate it with someone if cornered on the subject by some theist but have never gone looking for them to confront. We just happen to believe in the tangible and more than not are rational thinkers that do not believe in the fary tales. If others are of the mindset to believe that garbage then fine, Sheep just follow blindly. Also Atheism has been around as long as religion.
Wrong! Do you realize just how old "religion" is? I'm not exactly sure, but i do know it's incredibly old, dating back to ancient Egypt. Atheism has remained basically the same, how as religion is the one that is being "re-discovered every few ages as something fun and new." If you take the time to do a little digging around on google , you will find that throughout history there have been many different religions and gods which have surprising, and seemingly coincidental similarities.
North Korea isn't atheistic. To say so suggests that one doesn't understand atheism. When a country worships their leader as a god, they're not atheistic, they're theistic. Gods don't have to be invisible, meta-physical nor do they have to write books through people who "claim" they're writing the god's words (though most of them do). Atheists don't have a god... zip... zilch... none. Once someone has/believes in a god, they're not an atheist by definition.
"there has never been an atheistic culture" because the way religion is designed is it discourages or censors dissent and indoctrinates children. Unfortunately for religion, we now live in the information age. Uh oh! Run away! lol. By the way, Sweden has an atheist majority. It's a better country than the US by all social, cultural, criminal, and health standards.
You present yourself as this well versed apologist and yet you make the most easily defeated, unoriginal, predictable arguments "USSR and North Korea are atheistic cultures". Automatic failure, xychr0. Those were governments that forced their population to not worships supernatural gods and instead worship their leaders. The party line was their dogma. Technically they were "atheist governments" but they still maintained all the classic characteristics of a personality cult.
Sweden on the other hand, although it has an official state religion, it doesn't enforce its population to practice any sort of ideology. The United States is a SECULAR country with a constitution written by FREE THINKERS like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, etc. The USA established itself as having a separation of church and state at its inception, making it a SECULAR country. Also, are you going to acknowledge the point I made about Sweden or just side step it?
"Those were governments that forced their population to not worships supernatural gods and instead worship their leaders. The party line was their dogma."
I just suggest you watch my video, because that's precisely what I said. They were atheistic cultures in which atheism was forced as a principle of the party line in a state-run mythos. Thanks - XY
No, you are twisting it to think it's the lack of belief in god in and of itself that makes these governments fascist. It's NOT. You are having trouble distinguishing concepts, probably because you are desperate to defend your belief that you will never die. Your conflation of atheism and fascism is really transparent.
I take it you wont ever acknowledge the point about Sweden. Why? Because it demolishes the whole crux of your slippery slope argument? Or do you have some legitimate reason to ignore it after two replies?
I think it'd be more interesting if you made a video, played my actual words, and then countered them, instead of taking my words, reinterpreting them, and responding to your reinterpretation. Peace - XY
OH WOW! Blatant red herring and shameless misrepresentation (irony). I rebut your conflation of atheism and fascism by showing you that Atheism is one answer to one question and Fascist Regimes are founded on personality cults. Two completely disparate concepts, neither enables the other in any capacity, and your only response is "you're attacking straw men!" which is ironically a straw man argument in itself!
Furthermore, Sweden has an atheist majority. It's a better country than the US by all social, cultural, criminal, and health standards. I dare you to answer this. I triple dare you.
Actually, according to a 2005 Eurobarometer poll, only 23% of Swedes say "they do not believe there is any sort of spirit, God, or life force". Figures on atheism in Sweden vary widely, but around 70% of it's citizens still at least formally belong to the Church of Sweden, even though church services are admittedly rarely attended.
@xychr0 Do you know what is a threat to organized religions. Facts and common sense. That is what kills gods. The world would be so much better with out man made religions.
you're right that atheism wont "replace" religion and myth, because it's not intended to. Atheism is the answer to a question: Do you believe in god. Nothing more, nothing less. Modern Science on the other hand has already replaced many of the myths in the bible with solid theories. We know the earth is not flat. We know the earth orbits the sun. We know dinosaurs did not live along side humans. Atheism isn't a fad. It's a lack of belief in gods.
Religion is based on ignorance. Where does the rain come from? The rain god. Why do we get sick? Demons make us sick. etc etc. We are becoming less ignorant so we have less religion. Inevitably religion will go the way of witches, fear of the number 13 and black cats.
Your Islam/Europe comparison is a commentary NOT on atheism but postmodernism which idolizes "diversity" and villifies nationalism. Strong nationalism would fix this problem.
Many studies over the last years have shown that atheisitic societies are much healthier than theistic ones. This includes crime rates, infant mortality rates, STD rates, abortion rates, social justice, education, etc.
You have no basis for saying that atheistic societies never last more than 25 years, because there are no examples of it. Most European countries are approaching that level, and all seem to be doing fine, certainly better off than America.
I would agree that at one time, the promise of some eternal life for being well behaved, as well as the ability of religion to forge strong fellowship and group solidarity may have been instrumental in allowing tribes (of 150 people) to survive long enough to discover agriculture, but we know have secular means of providing ANYTHING that religion provides (except for the supernatural claims). Rock concerts for example mimic the spiritual unity of crowds religious rituals do.
I don't think so. I mean, within the ritualistic practice of moshing, yes, you could have accidental deaths, and in Woodstock 99 there were people who were killed, but that's not a result of the messages in the music. It's just a result of statistical odds. It's when the rock band takes on the characteristics of a personality cult that it becomes dangerous (i.e. the insane clown posse and my chemical romance)
First: I'm from Sweden. I've met about two people my entire life who believe in God. Polls show that about 80% of all Swedes are atheist. That seems about right. Sorry pal. It's not propaganda. Second (addressing an earlier point): There is no reason to believe that we will ever completely get rid of rape and murder. This doesn't mean we should allow for such behavior. We might never completely get rid of religion. So what? It doesn't mean we should stop combating superstition.
A mythos might be necessary for a totalitarian state, such as North Korea, to work. But no modern democracy actually needs to be sustained by superstition. And, yes. Critical thinking of this sort might in turn to a less cohesive society. So what? Nationalism is also frowned upon in Sweden.
A culture has to have a mythos in order to be cohesive?? You have any evidence for the statement that we MUST believe lies and unsupported scientific claims in order to be cohesive??? What a nonsensical thing to say.

you are wrong, Atheism has never been this big, look at Europe, a HUGE part of europe is atheist now.
Religion has had its time, now lets become rational.
Atheism in Sovjet was forced on the people, not as Europe is today.
